This fun bike tips the scales at 24lbs. Not bad for a 29+

    Here is what I ride.

Electra Townie. Most comfortable bike I have ever owned. Forward pedal system is awesome.

This morning I placed my order for a Trek 920 in 61cm, I was told by my LBS I should take delivery May 1.:yay:
Since (R) knee surgery last Dec I have been really focused on leg muscle and core low impact strength training. This bike will be just the ticket for Blue Ridge Mtn forest roads and rail trails, secondary country roads, and light touring.

So while in wait/holding pattern for my Trek 920 to ship and arrive at my local bike store. I decided to begin ordering mods.

I scooped up the last set of Shimano Deore XTPD 8000 dual use pedals, (thanks Amazon), Bontrager MBT riding shoes (perfect fit), and a set of Cascadia aluminum ALX fenders. The cycling mod bug has got me pretty bad and just begun.

I may single speed the Stache 7 and replace the Manitou with a Lefty 100mm PBR I have sitting in the shed.

Built a flat wood rack with lockable fork mounts. Also did the tie downs like @csuviper showed and they worked out great to hold the board in place.

Recently purchased this original owner barn find all original 32 year old 1986 Schwinn Peloton off CL.
This bike hung in a garage for 32 yrs, ridden maybe a dozen times.
I added new fresh white lightning grease to the bottom bracket bearings, new tubular tires, clipless pedals, and a new Selle Anatomica leather saddle. I was offered $1000.00 for it and turned it down, it’s a keeper and not forsale.

After- with new tubs aka tubular tires, leather saddle and SPD520 clipless pedals.

@smslavin  Hey sharp eyes actually a 61cm...haha..yeah tubs these are not glued, too messy, I used Tufo tape. The adhesive activates once you air up the tubs. Installed properly they work well. Lots of excellent reviews on Tufo tape and a flat in the country side repairs quicker with tape on and off. Honestly I did not have to do very much to make her mine. The paint is in amazing shape.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=59CxVhL_TUc

Here is a pic of the tape install, after I cleaned all the glue residue off the rim. The tape is sorta like 3m double sided on steroids:rofl: install the Tub at the valve stem and work the tub onto the rim and gently pull the orange release tape off. Done. To remove this tape you need to heat it with a hair dryer or heat gun. Tough as nails to remove otherwise.

i started racing when i was 13. i've been around a lot of bikes for a long time. did some time as a shop rat too.

that tape looks like good stuff. i quit riding tubulars many many years ago after i watched the front tire roll off the rim of a guy i was following at 50+ downhill. it left a mark. on both of us.

Ouch! Yeah there have been reports of tub glue warming up on the rim with heat transfer from braking on long hills or even a bicycle rim sitting in the hot sun for extended periods IDK... I am going to be very careful and avoid out riding my Tufo tape limits if such a thing exists. Keeping this bike original I have to ride tubs.

Now if I can only quit buying bicycles especially clean vintage bicycles...

Anyone have opinions on Giant bikes? I'm already starting to shop for my next bike. Some Giant bikes look pretty decent.

You should look at the New Specialized Stump Jumper it's been redesigned and rides great. Also check out Santa Cruz great bikes and some at a great price. Gaint is good but I feel there suspension platform mediocre. FSR, VP, or DW are the best suspension platform to go with.

First off, There is nothing wrong with Giant bikes. I have ridden a few Anthems and Trance rentals of varying levels and they ride great.
I always recommend that you find a local bike shop that you like and has a good reputation of taking care of their patrons, then see what they have to offer.
What kind of riding and how often do you plan to ride? Full suspension bikes take a lot of maintenance to keep them running smoothly.
You will be happier with a good hardtail over a full suspension bike dollar for dollar. My 2015 Cannondale Scalpel Carbon Team bike was one of if not the top XC race bike of it's time and I was dropping a couple hundred a month on keeping it immaculate when I was riding it everyday.
Some bikes have a lot of proprietary components meaning it can become an issue upgrading or replacing components. (Cannondale for example)
This also can have an effect on getting repairs done when you are away from home. One of the reasons I like Trek is because they can be found almost anywhere just don't expect to turn heads with one.
As mentioned above, Specialized and Santa Cruz make great bikes but depending on where you are especially in the eastern U.S., dealers can be a little sparse.

Oh and do you have a plus or fat bike yet?

Giant and Trek both provide some great value. Check out Canyon as well. Their direct to consumer business model makes for an incredible value. I reckon the Canyon Spectral has the same geometry as the Giant Trance, and for slightly more $$ for the CF8, you get an incredible upgrade in components.

Thanks for the info. Current bike is a 2017 Specialized Rockhopper, 29er. The geometry is all wrong for me and my riding style. Not a huge fan of 29ers though Id have to ride some othera with different geo to form a final opinion. I'm 5'5" and roughly 190lbs a small frame is pretty well a must.

I like to bomb single track, hit smaller jumps and throw the bike around a bit. Playful would describe my style I guess. I used to XC and BMX race with non-comp downhill and freeride thrown in a bit.

Always ridden hardtails so I'm not adverse to sticking with them vs a full suspension. At least until I can dedicate alot more time to riding and maintenance.

Looks at Santa Cruz 5010 or Bronson. 5010 is 130 fork with 130 rear. You can really throw 5010 around. Bronson more of a plow. New stumpy ST is super playful as well.
