Wait, that's like 40 miles roundtrip. I see Del Dios or Elfin Forest in your future if that's going to equal 50 miles one way. Either way, nothing beats a mindless cruise along PCH when the weather is good. Plenty of eye candy to take your mind off of the suffering.

The route goes inland somewhere around Solana Beach to make it 50 miles. Could be Del Dios or Elfin, not really sure. It’s two loops total which is kind of a bummer but like you said, definitely good views along the way. We did about 30miles last saturday from Carlsbad to Solana Beach and back. It’s relatively flat as well which is good, for me anyways.

Curious, when it comes to putting your road bike in the bed of the truck, I ride a 58 cm frame and 44 cm bars and it lies flat enough for a Bak Flip to close over top of it. Couldn't you just lay it flat? Removing the front wheel doesn't take much effort, but damn that gets old. Hanging it on the tailgate is easy enough but the pads for the tailgate can run $100 or more.

BTW, I have a DaKine Tailgate pad if you'd like to borrow it for a week or so to try it out. I'm not riding much these days so it's no big. I'm in North County.

Thank you for the offer, that would be awesome! I’m in North County as well. San Marcos. I’m on a 54cm so laying it flat under the cover is what I’m currently doing. I just wasn’t sure if that was bad for the bike or anything. Also, if I wanted to give a buddy a ride it would be hard to throw his bike back there as well..

Thanks man. I love the intense. with a powermeter, it's like 22 lbs. Insane.

Fork is a Fox 34 Stepcast. Pedals are Deity flats that I was using to pedal around the neighborhood and get dialed in. I normally use XTR.

If you need flats, the Deity stuff is superb.

If you can jump up to like 800 you get a lot of bike, but below that I would go CL

Over time, the tailgate pads will trap dust and eventually act like sandpaper on your bike and tailgate. Ask me how I know.... they are OK for shuttle MTBs every now and then, but it's not a great solution for hauling regularly. Not to mention multiple bikes will just bounce around and bang into one another.

Laying it flat is theoretically ok, but you could bend a crank over time. I doubt this would happen, but the repeated bouncing would not be ideal.

If you have a cover, I would just invest in the hitch rack. If your getting into cycling to take care of your body for the long haul, you'll get your money's worth of the 1 up. Plus they are super sought after, so if you want to sell it you can easily.

Will a tailgate pad work with a crewmax and a toolbox?

Probably, but there wouldn't be room for anything else. If I'm remembering right, I have about a foot or foot and a half from the rear wheel of the bike to the front of the truck bed. Granted, I'm 6'5" and so all my bikes are xl or xxl so they are super long.

Thanks, I have a full size toolbox so it sounds like I will need to get either a slim model toolbox or a hitch rack. Both about the same price but different conceptually. I have a Dakine tailgate pad, but I'm looking to upgrade this too if I stick with the tailgate pad bike haul method. So new slimline toolbox + EVOC tailgate pad, or old full size toolbox + 1up USA heavy duty hitch rack? I do shuttle occasionally, light off-roading, and camp. I also live 5 minutes from a state park. Don't mind scratching the bike, don't really wanna scratch my tailgate again (hence better coverage pad if I stay this route).

Maybe this isn't what you are looking for but when I bought my tundra I had an old roof rack rail system. So I bought a new set of roof tracks and mounted them to the lid of the tool box and just use the fork mounts there. Works pretty good, I have a gull wing box so i can still get into the one side If I need to with bikes on top.

This looks great, but I am trying to keep the front tire on for transport. That's a nice looking toolbox!

Im still on the search for an easy secure cover capable mount system. I have a hitch mount, but it is a PIA. Id rather not use it when I'm just taking one or two bikes. I dont like the tailgate pad method for longer trips, but do use that for short ones. Found the rockymounts axle system that mounts to the factory rail. That worked awesome until I put the tonneau cover on. It wont clear with the cover on. The Tacomas have a lot of options, but havent been able to find many for the Tundra.

    RockyMounts on Rail.

While I have a Saris Freedom Superclamp 2, $50 gets you 2 bike capable hauling on the cheap. This thing stays in the bed and I forget it's there until I need it especially when hauling a trailer. If a friend needs to borrow it, It fits in other full size trucks and I don't have to lend my $500 hitch rack.

Since 2012, I've enjoyed using the deck rail system with both Yakima and Rocky Mounts, fork mounts. I ride a 58cm and my break lever hoods are just above the top of the truck. A few of my other buddies have fixed rails that attach to the lower tie-down loop at the front of the truck with fork mounts on the rail. That style keeps all the of bike out of the wind. I have a bed rug and a bed cover. When I ride after work I put my bike inside and lock it up, if I'm traveling with friends, I put mine in the bed and put my Kuat rack on two carry two more.

One of the things I love about the Tundra, specifically the crewmax, is that I can take the front wheel off my road bike and place in the back seat on the floor with ease.

Can you guys suggest a good first bike? I've been on the fence for so long, I just want some direction. I live just outside St. Louis and will only be riding in the midwest. Any direction?

You might want to elaborate on the type riding you are looking to get into. trail riding, mixed, road?

ha ha, that would probably help huh? Trail riding/mixed. I'm looking for my first mtn bike. I'm 5'9, 170, 36 YO with kids so I want something I can use with them but also load up and hit trails. I need another activity in my life to stay in shape and I'm hoping mtn biking will help me do that.

While you’ll get great advice on here, one of the best things you could probably do is find a few local bike shops and see if they’ll let you do some demos of bikes. There are tons of great bikes out there but it’s important that you like the way it fits you. Or even if you end up not buying local, you can get a sense of what features and geometry you like

I understand that but I don't want to buy new. So I want to know what I should be looking for. Maybe some general guidelines? Or I guess I could jump on a bike forum for that but was hoping for some pointers.
