Next is to fab yourself a rear diff skid and whatever else you don’t have protected under there. Get that rig ready.

We are definitely on the same though process. I’ve been laying down there thinking up of how to protect the axle and I’ve got a couple of ideas but as with everything, I need to think it through and make sure it’s gonna be functional and strong enough to handle a beating.

Make sure to let me know what you come up with when you start to tackle the gas skid. I have the Victory4x4 gas skid, and although it’s the best off the shelf gas skid available, it’s just not gonna cut it. Need a beefier solution.

I’ll keep you posted on this. Hopefully I come up with something useful, it’s a finicky one the mounting points. I’m probably gonna use the RCI as the template to improve on it.

Makes sense. Just have them before the next big trip to avoid denting those clean rockers lol

Switched over my OEM Toyota axles while they're still good to Duralast extended travel axles. I'll be keeping my OEM ones as trail spares in the event of a failure on the Duralast ones. I switched because I've been wanting to carry spares for a while now and it made sense to get some that have lifetime warranty so I can keep swapping them out if they continue to break, which I hope doesn't really happen.

I hear these axles won't work with many aftermarket shock bodies or coilovers unfortunately due to the stepped midshaft on them. Fortunately for me, they fit and clear my OME shocks.

I've seen these online. I'd be a bit concerned at how small this housing is because the smaller housing means it holds a smaller race, which might be more susceptible to breaking. $.02

Yup I agree, that was my same conclusion. I made a separate post in the 2nd gen sub outlining that issue as well. So I’ll see how they hold up to abuse. Gonna test them out this weekend.

Not yet, but I actually haven’t even talked to them about trails yet, they might have some already picked out.

Went out to Moab this weekend and ran Gold Bar Rim with another fellow tundra. The axles performed normal, no binding and no strange clicking or anything. Put the pedal down a few times and bounces a couple obstacles with no issues. So they handled their first trail fine. Now to just continue doing the same and see how long they hold up for.

Earlier this month I got a sidewall tear in one of my tires, but with the tread too worn Discount tire wouldn’t honor the road hazard. So I bit the bullet and bought a new set of tires. Considered 40’s for a long minute but ultimately settled on 38’s.

Once mounted, I had rubbing issues on my rear body mount, which goes to show how much bigger 38’s truly are compared to 37’s since I never had rubbing issues on 37’s off road.

With that said, I got to work cutting away a good chunk more off my body mount and making a new cover plate for it with the help of a friend. Got it burned in and it is just barely not enough when I stuff the tire up and turn it. So the next order of business is upgrading my UCA’s to SPC’s and seeing if that gives me the extra bit of adjustment I need in my alignment to clear. If it doesn’t, then I’ll be doing a body mount relocation and for that matter may as well tub the firewall for 40’s

Looking sick! Do you notice any power loss with the jump to 38’s?

I sure did! When I regeared to 5.29’s it felt pretty close to stock. But now on 38’s the power loss is significant. I don’t think it’s as bad as stock on 37’s but it’s noticeable regardless.

You’ll eventually cross over to the dark side  Going bigger is not an overlandy move. What happened to shifting to overlanding?

Cool gen 2! I’m enjoying seeing your build, but I gotta bring up the FD in your first photo :eek2: Is it yours?
From what I can see it looks gorgeous! In high school I had a noble white anniversary FC, and later on picked up a Montego blue ‘94. Gah I wish I kept them!

PS - I’m originally from SoJo and also lived in Moab for a bit. May have to go wheeling with you sometime when I’m visiting fam in SLC. A romp through 5 Mile Pass is always fun.

Lol I asked myself the same question, and then my wife asked it. I think we are all in agreement it doesn’t add up for overlandish stuff. But I suppose I just have unfinished business with a few more trails to knock out and I wanted to try out a larger tire in the meantime. Who knows, maybe I’ll do 40’s one day

Thank you, and yes it’s my FD! Although it doesn’t get driven anywhere near as much as my Tundra. The Montego Blue is such a nice color, varies so much under lighting I love it. I’ve been thinking of selling mine as well just because I don’t really use it and maybe I’ll buy something else that’s more practical. Still a fun car, but more everyday type. But yeah next time you’re up this way let me know and if there’s a chance, we’ll get out and wheel!
