Bed can hit cab and cause damage

This thread's subject line is like a newspaper story where the headline is just wrong. It should read: Reckless 4 wheeling can bend your frame and otherwise severely damage your truck.

 

While it is pretty clear that the guy isn't an expert off roader, at the end of the day in this particular instance, he got stuck in a mud hole and was pulled out...I mean...it kinda happens and most people don't expect to cause damage to their truck by pulling the truck backwards. It's pretty clear to me what happened to cause the damage, and not really surprising. I think the toyota engineers commenting on his instagram post are also aware what caused this, and
they are trying to cover their bases..but they are aware with this being a potential issue with their choice of bed material. I would guess they didn't expect to address it quite this soon though...lol

I will say that I think he picked the wrong truck if he wanted to explore the areas he has been going. He probably would be better off with a Tacoma or a Wrangler. The stock Tundra is not the best tool for the job he is using it for.

In his video in the ozarks he had a whole lot of plastic crap fall off the truck, and while he pushed it a little hard, it wasn't that bad of an area.

 

Not "pretty clear to me" what happened. I for one HIGHLY doubt the damage was caused by simply pulling the truck from behind. The owner has clearly done some stupid stuff and we won't see a video of the actual cause, YMMV

 

Fair enough, we don't know what he did between getting pulled out of the mud until he took it to the shop, but the damage was not there prior to the tow. And it is pretty clear that his bed is not aligned properly after the tow...(coming apart or twisted). It really isn't surprising, you can only twist plastic so far, same as metal. They both have pluses and minuses, one tell you it has had to much and dents, the other just cracks or splits...

 

Now they'll trim the plastic lip behind the bed to prevent this from happening in the future and we all benefit from it.
The composite bed of 3rd gens can flex more though, being that it is plastic.
The new solid fully boxed frame is stiffer(20% front, 10% rear), wider and flexes less than prior frames(fully boxed front, reinforced mid-rear, open-c rear).

Truck's a bunch of plastic held together with plastic. What a joke. Toyota USA puts out such garbage compared to the overseas stuff.

It has to be stiffer its plastic. There are no heavy duty trucks with plastic beds. if there are correct me please.

Didn't someone already find the "toyota patches" on the inside of the bed to deal with vibrations ?
Can someone post the pic please. These are true band-aids these patches.

First they make the plastic bed and then force most to spray it to keep their beer cases from sliding around.
Not good whether cans or bottles.

I predict the plastic bed will continue to have chronic problems because ...... it is no longer in the baby taco market anymore.
There will be construction guys using it for construction needs in the full size market.
When they dropped the loads in the bed in those commercials the rear bumper covers almost fell off.

Look I started my research back in Dec. when I learned how much my truck was worth as a trade in.
I wanted to like this 3rd Gen. and who knows what the future holds.
I don't care about the problems - Toyota will fix them.
I care about the reasons they took, to make certain decisions on this new product.
We all know what they are.

Now that y'all are digging into the specifics of plastic truck bed, does putting a heavy ass Leer cap on the new Tundra pose a long term issue?

I would probably put bed stiffeners on it, thats what you have to do with the tacoma bed.

its 175-200 lbs for the fiberglass one. I had one in the past on another vehicle. Its basically your passenger weight but the space, options and security it brings are worth it I think. They did a study on these going by memory - a 100 lb cap saves 1 mpg but above that your vehicle is carrying weight so no mpg saving.

What has me more concerned is this scenario.

So Bob is a builder and is in the Ozarks like our buddy here on this thread and is building a deck extension for Mr and Mrs Jones. 8^0 for their retreat.
The material he needs to pick up weighs 2600 lbs. He is not aware and frankly doesn't give a hoot that his truck has a 1400 lb payload rating.
So he is at home depot and he is making one trip not two. It "all" goes into the bed. The same thing happens if this was me with my 2018.
I am not making two trips. Never had a problem. Anyway
So I have used the attached picture before on the forum here because I feel it is a good visual.
Dodge Ram and Ford HD trucks on inclines and how their different frame setups react.

Lets pretend the 2022 Tundra is the Dodge Ram on the left and the previous gen Tundra is on the right.
Both have 2600lbs in them and remember, the Ozarks have some crazy uneven inclines to get to Mr and Mrs Jones retreat.

What is going to happen to the plastic bed on the 2022 Tundra when it tries to go up that incline on the left?
Its back tire lifts and the full stresses of 2600 lbs hit the plastic bed. Will it pass? We can't answer that yet. Toyota needs to see if these contractor trucks start showing up in repair.
How is the abuse these construction guys do to the trucks, any different than the guy on this thread?
People abuse trucks. they always have. they are tools. Construction guys are trying to get a job done.
This guy on this thread is on a mission. He spent what $60k US and he is going to see how far its going to take him.

How do you repair a bent frame? Bend it back? Would you be comfortable with that if you use it as a work truck?

 

I think in the example it would be a bent bed, which the plastic bed can be replaced and the metal skins put back on

 

Tundra should look similar without the metal skins.
