My F150 had this feature and let me tell you the tundras system is far superior. You have to push the pedal much harder to get the engine to shut off. This is ingenious. If I see a light about to turn green I don't push down. If I am at a stop sign. I don't push hard on it. I also like that when it doesn't shut off it says battery charging

    Cool plots.

Prius has 0 engine torque at 1000 rpm after 1.5 sec with a total elapsed time of 0.5 seconds until engine is making torque. The MG1 speed is driving the engine with no load on it providing oil flow.

The tundra engine looks to take 1 second to start. This is interpreted as the time between the 0 engine speed and when engine speed hits 950-ish and vehicle speed goes above 0. The moment there is engine speed indicates starter engagement and then at some point spark ignition. Engine timing isn't the parameter that determines engine firing. When there is cylinder firing the loads on bearings increases substantially vs freewheeling with mg1 as in prius.

The engine torque in case of tundra has a larger total gap to overcome to move vehicle. So the engine load is increased higher than the Prius (which can move under MG2 in many circumstances). The timing curve also shows an increase in advance indicating the system is quickly trying to increase engine torque. This reaches a peak right near the point when vehicle speed takes off.

You’re right, spark timing isn’t a really good measure to gauge starting but voltage is. Tundra battery voltage goes to 12V at 1.0 sec when starter shuts off, so engine is firing. Start time is from when the starter engages until it disengages. Prius engine is also firing since torque is becoming positive at 1.5 sec mark. Both are trying to fire for that half second.

on a second and third look at the tundra, that cranking cycle is super short actually. If you line up the voltage, to where the timing actually starts to increase, it is very short. It looks like about .25 seconds. I'm measuring from zero engine speed to about half way up the engine speed curve (apprx 0.75 mark.).

Basically the ignition timing is retarded heavily during engine cranking (fr various reasons). Then you see timing increase as the system is trying to increase engine rpm past the engine stall speed (typically that is around 400-500 rpm)

So the cranking portion, where loads are smallest, is very small batch of time.

The rest of the upswing in rpm is from the engine reaching state of firing on all cylinders.

What is beneficial here and maybe "the magic" is the timing curve seems to be very muted until full engine idle rpm is reached.

Have experienced this feature on rented cars. Hate it. Abhor it. Hate hate hate it.

Has anyone anywhere hacked their way into a permanent disable?

Auto Start/Stop is ok. Its good when its not too hot or cold out and you’re stuck in traffic. Even then though, if you let off the brake too much it’ll start right back up.

I’m on the fence about it, leaning towards what’s the point. My Honda Odyssey won’t turn off when stuck in traffic if my AC is running, so again, what’s the point if its use is very limited.

Plus from owning junkers in my teens, when I come to a stop and my car shuts off I get that momentary “oh crap, did it just die?” feeling LOL

I’ve always used the idle stopper start/stop device whenever possible.

I live in one of the hottest cities in the country and it still shuts off with the a/c on high and recirculating (max).

Yeah its really good for saving gas. You can literally sit in traffic idling and watch your MPG tick down. But I can already hear a lot of Tundra owners on here; “You don’t buy a Tundra for the gas mileage.”

They do. IIRC, the wires are hidden completely by the compartment in the passenger side, then zip tied to a support bar on the driver side

I purchased one a while back just haven’t installed it because I was waiting on a possible workaround from leaving the fuse box cover off.

I’ll install it hopefully this weekend. Thanks for your feedback!

I just picked the Tundra yesterday. I forgot it even had start stop. I was in traffic a good portion of the day and it never turned the motor off.

Honestly I don't mind that. The way I push the brake doesn't engage it anyway. Good enough for me

Fuse box cover will likely have to be removed in all cases due to the fuse tap...but it's nothing noticeable as another plastic cover (that is removed for installation) blocks access/view to it anyhow.

I had the same issue. That's why I installed the module on the As/s. I didn't mind the As/s since I didn't press the brake hard enough to auto stop the engine. but it was stupid for the engine to stop and restart when I put it in park.

I've had start/stop cars for years now and I still get the same minor heart jump you're talking about when one shuts off. When my Chevy Vega shut off at a light it meant something :). The Tundra is by far and away the least intrusive start/stop I've driven. I'm not going to worry about it for now.

LOL my old man had one of those, a ‘76. Growing up in the eighties we were working on a car every weekend and my Dad always kept like 4 or 5 vehicles because you always needed a back up. People should remember those days now that nearly every vehicle made is really pretty darn good. Those 60’s and 70’s cars were easy to work on, but man you had to always work on them.

    Thanks for the memory

I just installed my auto/start stop purchased from funman1steve on eBay. $59 and it works perfect. My torture of having to shut that off every time I start the truck is over! What a horrible stupid and annoying feature auto start/stop is! Especially when Toyota tells you not to shut off the engine immediately after the turbos have been under high load.

If you go with the hybrid motor it doesn’t have the start/stop button. It does go into a hybrid type mode but nothing like the reg gas engines do.

We have this discussion all the time at work wondering how much a starter is going to cost also when the flex plate is shot from higher than usual engine starts. If you ever changed a flex plate you'll understand how much work it is IF you can slide the transmission/transfer case back to sneak up to the crankshaft bolts to change it. I'd be willing to bet it might be a cab lift off to have enough room to get to it. But that's just me being a glass half empty.
