Coming off the interstate behind one of Jeffery Bezos’s blue minions and they got over on the shoulder and kicked a big one back at me. It was initially a chip and I was hoping I could get it filled, but by the time I got home looks like this, about 4in. I suspect by morning it will spread further and/or spider out.

I haven’t contacted my insurance or called safelite or anyone yet, but Im wondering if these windshields are even available?

I'm sure I'll be replacing mine sooner than later considering where I live. I'll be saving up for a Toyota OEM windshield. None of the aftermarket replacement windshields are remotely comparable in my experience (I get a new windshield once a year on average)

I got a rock chip on day 7 of my 2022... yay! Didn't beat the record of 2 hours with my 2012. Anyway, had it repaired rather than replaced, chip is not in line of sight and they did a really good job with the repair. Estimate for new Toyota windshield, r&r and camera calibration was just shy of $1700... ouch!

Damn, $1700?! Here in AZ insurance usually covers no deductible windshield replacement, I think it's actually a law. I've gone through tons of windshields on our vehicles.

Oh man sorry that happened. I had mine for a few days back in February when I first got it and my windshield was completely smashed by a sheet of ice coming off a pick up truck. It took safelite about 3 weeks for them to find a windshield because I wanted OEM. I tell ya, they did a great job. I'm sure supply is a little better now.

I had to replace mine. My local dealer (in NV) said there were none available and put me on a waiting list for a call-back. Not even a "we'll order it" but just a "we'll call you when you can order it". But a local auto glass place said sometimes different dealers can get things, especially in different states. They found a place in CA (Sacramento) that got me one in 5 days. Cost me $1025 shipped and installed. No idea why a major dealer in Reno couldn't get one but a dealer one state over could.

Moral of the story: call around (or better yet find a nice shop who'll call around for you).

And also, yeah, that'll need to be replaced for sure, especially because it looks like it's gone to the edge which will affect the strength. Mine was a fairly small star but it happened on a camping trip in really hot weather. By the time I got home 2 days of high temps had spidered the cracks out a foot in multiple directions.

I guess insurance coverage varies state to state. I've always had my windshield replaced with no deductible. I just thought that's how it was done with full coverage, learned something new on this thread.

Got it patched up just now. No deductible. It isn’t perfect but it wont spider out at least. It wont be the last time it happens anyway. Much rather crack a windshield than throw an impeller or something. lol

PPF for glass is a thing, zero experience, anyone use this? I am thinking bad idea for us Canadians or anyone else that has to scrape ice off windshields

    STEK DYNOFLEX WINDSHIELD PROTECTION FILM
STEK windshield protection film is an optically clear film that is specifically designed to reduce the risk of having to replace expensive windshields as a result of rock chips, cracks, and pitting. DYNOflex is a crack-resistant, self-healing film that effectively absorbs and disperses even the strongest shocks. Apart from protecting the glass, the film also provides 99% UV rejection to protect the interior surfaces and passengers’ skin. Protect and preserve your factory windshield with windshield protection film today.

I just replaced my windshield through SafeLite 2 days ago for only $550 for my 2015. It only took a week between scheduling the replacement and having the work done. I didn't go through insurance.

1st week I got a nice star chip right in my site line. Safe lite said there’s a small chance of it breaking on repair. I said how small? Percentage wise? He said 6% chance of breaking on repair. I said ok, I’ll take the chance. But please try not to, I don’t wanna use my insurance. I’m glad they fixed yours too.

1 month in on the new truck and have not one but two cracks. The bigger one being almost in an identical spot to OP. Called dealership and they have an Abra glass shop on-site. From what I was told there is not any aftermarket glass available particularly if you have a trim model with heads up display (I do not) or rain sensing wipers (that I do have). Was told 7-10 days from time of ordering to delivery but that it could take a lot longer. As of now have an appointment set up for the 16th so fingers crossed it shows up in time.

Rock hit the bottom center or my windshield on the interstate. Small chip turned into a big crack right up the center of my windshield. Thankfully my auto insurance has special glass coverage so the repair is only going to cost me $50 but I have been waiting for 6 weeks for safelite to get the part. They keep saying they expect to receive it any day, but then they don't.
If you want yours replaced, I can confidently say it will take a while to receive.

I don't know what insurance you have, but usually if they cover glass, you get OEM glass for a while after the vehicle is new. After a few years, yeah, you pay the difference if you insist on OEM, but for the first couple of years it should cover Toyota glass.

Bummer you caught one like that…at our shop we love to tint windshields out of the car/truck when available
Some installers get worried about doing glass out but we built a rack just for that
    Couldn’t hurt to ask
A lot less worry spraying water all over a dash with electronics and such
    Good luck on your repair
