Do you have the 4.6 or the 5.7? It should take 8.5 quarts for the 5.7 (unsure for the 4.6). I would double check you're not low, because only 7 ain't enough (assuming it's the 5.7).

I sure started getting nervous reading through this thread when the “Amazon filters can be counterfeit” comments started. I watched the video and my filters don’t compress like the counterfeit one. But like another member posted, I only have the word “Toyota” and nothing else on one section of the filter. I bought this five pack below from Amazon which had good reviews. But now I’m wondering if it isn’t worth getting at least one filter from the dealer just to compare before using any out of the five pack.

If you want I can take some pictures tomorrow of my authentic Toyota oil filter so you can compare.

No I got the 5.7 and it was more than enough, it was above the two dotted marks on the dipstick. I initially added almost 8 (7.9 According to Toyota) but then had to drain a bunch with my new cool Fumoto drain valve. Checked it again after the truck was standing for a while it was still above the two marks..

7qts seems like it's too little. The 5.7 takes 8.5qts as @Red&03Taco said. I believe the 7.9qts that Toyota suggests is if you don't drain the oil filter canister but since it looks like you did, it should be 8.5qts.

    I concur.

every time I do a full oil change it's ~8.5 qts.

    2020

did different years have different oil pans....I think not.

    interesting - nonetheless.

How about the oil filter canister? Is 2007+ same plastic canister as later models? I ended up with a stuck canister last weekend so I didn't change out the filter. I want to have an emergency backup one on standby in case it breaks. I settled for a dorman metal one but I'd rather have OEM. I might be able to snag one from a '13 part out.

I think the discrepancy comes from the angle the truck sits when draining old oil and how long it is allowed to trickle.

With the extra clearance of my skinny 35s and almost completely flat driveway, I don’t jack the truck up at all (which would angle the oil pan, potentially keeping a small amount of old oil from draining). I think I get that extra half quart or so out compared to some of y’all.

I’m not saying that you’re not doing a good oil change if you only replace 7 qt when the manual says 7.9; just noting a possible explanation given that we’re surely not seeing a super wide tolerance in oil pan sizes.

After letting oil pan and filter fully drain, I start with adding 7.5qt, and always have to add a bit more after a short drive to get between the marks on the dipstick.

Ths recent oil change I did(which was my first on this truck) I used rhino ramps which inclines it allowing me to get under my truck since I have no lift. I put the full 8.5qts in and checked the level next morning with a cold engine. Would you uguys think the best way to drain everry last drop out would be to jack it up from the drivers side only? Or am I overrthinking this? :monocle:

y'all remember the dude that - after draining the oil - pours in a half quart of new oil to get all the remnant oil out?

    pure genius

I do that every time now.

Also would be best to drain when the oil is warm or hot, right? Drains better?

Yes, you should ideally drain it when the oil it at least warm. And I wouldn't bother about lifting the driver side higher. Yes maybe you'll get a few extra drops out, but you're getting the vast majority out, so it's fine.

I think you're absolutely right on this one. I have 35s as well and therefore can do my oil change without jacking the truck up too. Consistently get 8.5 quarts out, and refill with the same.

The oil level should be checked with the truck chassis in a level position. After the new oil is added (proper quantity per the manual), start engine to build oil pressure and fill the filter. Wait several minutes, then check with dipstick (if desired, I seldom do since there should be no difference from oil change to oil change).

I drain, fill and start with the truck on the ramps to check for leaks (there never is any). Then I back off the ramps after I install the skid plate. I'm done at this point (except for cleanup).

That's exactly how I did it: left it open and poured about half a quart until I saw clean oil coming from the drain. Additionally, I leveled out the truck with 1.9 (6120) in the front and 5100 in the rear and changed it without a lift—I just rolled right under. One thing to note is that I parked the truck with the front facing the garage, as the driveway slopes slightly away from the garage, though the decline is minimal.
