I am about to do my 5000 miles maintenance on my 2021 and I don't mind switching to 5W-30 but I was wondering if the Toyota dealership service shop is going to give me hard time? Is 5w-30 in the maintenance books or just 5w-20? Last thing I want them is to void my warranty that is also extended through Toyota.

    Just ask your service advisor.

    Or change the oil yourself.

They won't do something to void their own warranty.

If still under warranty, I would follow the recommended oil type in your manual. Should something happen to the engine, an oil analysis will reveal the type of oil in it. Don't give them an excuse to void your warranty.

I would do it yourself or pay an independent shop to put 5w-30 in it.

If the unthinkable were to happen and the engine grenades inside of warranty, drain the oil and add back in the appropriate 0W-20/5w-20 before getting it towed to the dealer.

If you're to believe that 5w-30 is the better oil to use, I'd want it in there ASAP

The dealer may give you a hard time about running 5w-30, but any independent shop will without question. It's worth a phone call to the service advisor, but they will probably give you a speech about keeping 0w-20. Or, as suggested, do it yourself.

I also run only 5w-30 and will never run 0w-20 again.

I used to have oil consumption issues with my 2013 Subaru Outback running 0w-20. Right around the 5k miles mark I would get a low oil light. I run 5w-30 now and she's always right where it should be now when I do an oil change. Any oil consumption now is not measurable.

Now obviously this is a shitty Subaru lol, but yeah, I stay away from 0w-20 and just do my own oil changes.

uhhhh yeah, don't do that lol. 5w-30 will not void a warranty, but having bottle fresh oil in a blown up engine surely will raise some red flags lol.

Here's a secret: the dealer has no idea if you run 5w30, 0w20, 5w20, whatever. If they ask, lie ;)

I would love to know if any dealer ever has had an oil analysis done on a failed motor. Would it even be possible if the failure itself put particles into the oil

Oil analysis would be tough to distinguish different oils

    they all break down differently

some 5w-30’s act like 20w when warm or sheared

so, I doubt any corp lawyer would use that type of evidence.

I did it and I'm in S TX. Engine runs more quietly with zero adverse effects.

    What kind of comparison?
My truck runs so much quieter on 5w30 (no ticking) then 5w20
I don't think there is much factual comparisons but no shortage of opinions some backed with experience

I bought my truck used with 42k miles on it. 5w20 in it when I got it, engine was very “ticky”. I switched to 5W30 and it’s been smooth and quiet since.

not a thread. but I compared blackstone tests on 0w-20 to 5w-30 - both kirklands (costco)

I'll try to find later today - it's in the supercharger thread.

and the 5w-30 had better wear numbers. easy to see & Blackstone commented as such.

    I'm in Houston.

    I continue to run 5w30.

and Costco oil is quite decent for 5k intervals. $38/10qts

    as promised

<...I posted this in the S/C thread also, so pardon the duplicate.>

    S/C related oil crap.

the oil on the right is 0w-20 - this is back when I had the S/C installed (how time flies!). dyno pulls, etc.
the one on the left is 5w-30. it has 5k miles of the 77.5mm pulley.
The ole girl still burns ZERO oil.

    read 'em and weep boys.

5w-30 has LESS wear!? (clutching my pearls)

Costco oil is GTG. 5w-30 is VGTG
I searched for similar Amsoil reports & found a couple...decided not to post them here as the comparison is profound.
And you never want to lather up the Amsoil boys.

As soon as I get my Amsoil report back I'll post it, @nobodyintexas

We'll have to wait on the lather as the 5w-30 report hasn't been sent off yet. Waiting on my next oil change. This incoming analysis is on 0w-20.

Some thicker 0w20 oils are very close to thin 0w30 oils.

But anyways: it would cost exorbitant amount of money to attempt to prove it in the court that 5w30 killed that ancient engine.
