Why would the dealership keep bulk 5W30 when the vast majority coming in for an oil change required 0W20 and 5W20?

I have about 109K miles on my truck and have always had the dealer change my oil since I've owned the truck (around 70K miles). However, after some bad experiences with the dealer stripping screws on the skid plate, I want to start doing my own oil changes.

I've been researching on forums and noticed that many people recommend using 5W-20 oil instead of the OEM 0W-20, as it offers better engine protection. Initially, I was leaning towards the thicker viscosity of 5W-20. However, after reading through various discussions, it seems that the consensus is in favor of using 5W-30 for better wear and smoother engine operation.

Furthermore, I've observed that the price for oil changes at the dealership has increased to almost $110, which has motivated me even more to perform the oil changes myself.

Now, as a first-timer, I would like some recommendations regarding oil brand (I'm considering Costco oils), filters, drain bundle packages, and any gaskets needed for the job. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Here is what i have lined up so far:

Oil brand - Not sure which one to get for the proper amount per oil change (12 pack 1-quart or 4 pack 5-quart)

I run 5w-20 because my durango also takes it and it keeps me from having to many different types of oils sitting around. Plus I can buy in bulk and get better savings.

Don't buy your Toyota oil filter from Amazon. Most are counterfeits. Buy from a online Toyota dealer or from the dealership. As far as oil, as long as it meets the specs your good to go. Kirkland and Walmart Tech oil are good quality oils. The most important thing is to change your oil every 5,000 miles.

Did not know that, how can you find out for sure if it is counterfeit and find OEM on Amazon? That is great advice, thanks.

    Ok, I'll say it.

    because it's cheap.

Dealerships run on margin. (cost containment)

and any oil is good oil.

that's why Toyota dealerships do NOT use TGMO...too expensive.

Hahaha I do the opposite… one of my other cars runs w30 so I’ve started buying that in bulk. I have about one change of 0w20 left so I’ll probably use that this winter.

My owner's manual specifically states that a higher viscosity may be better if running high speeds and/or heavy loads. Aside from that, I don't give AF what dealer has what cuz they aren't filling my crankcase with anything. I was just curious if someone at your shop took climate into consideration at all. Nothing more, nothing less. Carry on!

Glad this thread came up again. Reminded me to hop on the Costco app and order another 4-pack of big 5-qt oil jugs. On sale right meow boys. 20 quarts delivered for $64.

Good luck finding quality oil for $3.20 per quart anywhere else!

That's the tough part. Trying to find the legitimate Toyota part on Amazon or Ebay. The counterfeits make the box look identical. Check out the Care Car Nut on youtube. He's a Toyota master tech and has a video on counterfeit parts.

The average customer doesn't go in asking questions about oil viscosity. For liability reasons they will change your oil with the viscosity that Toyota specifies. I once had a customer wanting me to use gear oil in his engine. Obviously I didn't and sent him on his way. Some people have some strange ideas.

The cost difference is negligible when buying in bulk and the dealership will use what Toyota Corp specifies for liability reasons. The bulk oil at our dealership was Mobile 1. Toyota doesn't offer bulk oil so the cost is higher (packaging) and the waste from contains. Once a week the bulk truck pumps Mobile 1 in the tanks. No waste and less handling.

I watched a local Ford dealer back when I was a teenager run an oil analysis on a Ford Lightening (2004 era) that blew the engine. He claimed it just happened out of the blue. They ran the oil analysis and found evidence of him running nitrous. He did his best to remove all the nitrous related parts before bringing it in, but the oil didn't lie.

lol I mean you could try! If they're like any other dealer they will do everything they can to not cough up money for a new engine.

Either way, to OP, just run oil, literally any engine oil, and you'll be fine :deadhorse: Hell, a friend of mine runs damn near half ATF in his old Subaru engine and it has over a quarter millions miles on it lol

Love watching that guy, he's pretty much got all the answers in a logical and informative manner. I think ill just go to the stealership to get oil filters, they were listed less than $10 so its not that bad. BTW, thanks for all the help, i went ahead and ordered the drain kit directly from Motivxtools(cheaper than Amazon) and the bulk 5quart 5W-30 from Costco. Im done with the dealer doing anything to my truck, its just sad.

You’ve got all the right stuff and will be so much happier after ditching the dealer.

Only item I’d add to your kit is a Fumoto valve to replace the pan drain plug. Takes all the mess out of draining the oil.

Again, thanks @Chad D. for this tip, i did not realize that i need this as well, i thought the kit for the oil filter is where you drain the oil and the little drain adapter was the only thing i needed.

    Would this this work?
    https://www.amazon.com/Fumoto-F106N-M14-1-5-Threads-Nipple/dp/B003T7XUE4

i still have the original skid plate to where the nipple would not stick out too much to out the skid plate back.

Thanks to @Ruggybuggy for the tip on the OEM Filters, watched the car care nut video and the Amazon link seems to be authentic.

Right idea, but that’s the wrong model. You want the F133. M12x1.25 thread. Doesn’t matter if you get the F133 (no nipple on drain side) or F133N (nipple on drain side) or F133S (shorter nipple). Even with a big skid plate like my RCI, there is plenty of room to drain with a Fumoto and no hose.

If you can pee into a urinal without painting the doorknob yellow, you can use a Fumoto on a Tundra without a hose…

All this talk about counterfeit parts and watching AMDs video gots me thinking if this oil filter I got is OEM or counterfeit
Most of what he said about the oil filter checks out except the part# printed on one of the sleeves. It only says "Toyota". Also this oil filter is orange in color rather than white or yellow :eek2:

Can anyone chime in and confirm OEM should be orange and read only "Toyota"?
Box says made in Thailand and the holographic sticker looks to me like its quality made but who knows.

And to answer the question, yes I did buy it on Amazon where I know it's risky doing so.

That's exactly what I got. I actually bought a 5pk so I'm hoping they are original. They definitely are sturdy and not flimsy like how AMD demonstrated so that gives me a bit of reassurance.
