    I am on the fence between 4.88 vs 5.29. I really don't care about in town driving, but do a ton of highway driving and sometimes with trailers (mostly <3500 lbs, ex. 7x14 dual axle enclosed). I currently have 34" tires and revert to 33" tires for the winter.

    In my opinion I’d say you’re definitely better off with 4.88 considering you’re on a 34” or less tire size. Your rpm would be high on the highway with 5.29 gears

    Can anyone recommend a place in ohio to do my regearing at? I've been wanting to do this for a while, but am really hesitant until I find a reliable shop that is able to do this and has experience doing it.

    The difference in RPMs between the two is really pretty marginal. Between the 4.88s and 5.29s at 60-70 mph the delta is around 150-200ish rpms.

    Driving style and preference matter in when it comes to choosing. In the lower gears the FD ratio makes a considerably difference in torque, 5.29s will pull harder and move through the gears faster. The engine, as Keith stated, will be under less load, will need to downshift less.

    My previous experience with regears was with sports cars and the major consideration with those was a sacrifice of top speed. Not much of a concern with the Tundra, especially since its electronically limited to 105 if I remember correctly. Ultimately you wont lose top speed as your not able to reach it anyway.

    For those looking to calculate themselves:

    rpm = mph x gear ratio x 336 / tire diameter

    I believe, but may be wrong, the 6th gear ratio is a .588 ratio. So you'd multiple the final value by .588 to get the top gear RPMs.

    So with stock 31s the RPMs are about 1781 at 65mph
    4.88s would be 2021
    5.29s would be 2387

    4.88 v 5.29 delta on stock tires (31s) would be 366 rpms

    33s
    1900rpm at 65 (4.88)
    2058rpm at 65 (5.29)

    Delta=158rpm

    34s
    1843rpm at 65 (4.88)
    1998rpm at 65 (5.29)

    Delta=155 rpm

    35s
    1790rpm at 65 (4.88)
    1940rpm at 65 (5.29)

    Delta=150 rpm

    Basically 4.88s with 35s will make it like stock, but the top gear difference between 4.88 and 5.29 wouldn't be very noticeable. Just need to be conscious of tire size when choosing gearsets is all. Personally I don't think its needed unless your getting into the 35"+ territory, but we all have different needs.

    Great info! This only confirms for me to go with 4.88 and my driving habits. Only looking to get back to stock with my 35s.

    I have 5.29s with 35s and cruising is 2600rpm @ 80mph (indicated, so the same regardless of your tire size). I would go with 5.29s over 4.88s if I were to do it again, I have yet to see any disadvantage to 5.29s since my top speed is still effectively unhindered and I have massive amounts of torque everywhere else. 2600rpm may sound like a lot, but the truck is essentially idling at that speed and I can go up steep hills at 80mph in 6th gear without breaking a sweat. My mpgs were unaffected too despite running at the higher rpm, and I've done multiple 1000+ mile highway trips since I had them installed a few months ago. Better towing, better cruising, better acceleration, no change in mpg, and can still hit 100mph; personally I don't see any downsides.

    I have 35x11.5x20 tires now but I may be going down to 295/70/18 which is essentially a 34” tire. At 4.88 for me this would work. I definitely do not plan on going past 35” tires.

    Now the biggest question is does anyone in this forum topic have a Supercharger and tune and is NOW thinking of a regear? I'm looking at hitting those milestones (Harrop SC and DAP tune if you're asking) in the future with my Tundra on 35s and then a regear when I move up to 37s.

    To piggy back off this, I'm looking at this chart and some users on the Tundra Forum #7 posting.

    I have a Magnuson with a pulley and OV Tune. I got the gears since they were a "deal", but I didn't have a real need for them before. The supercharger by itself more than makes up for the tire size imo, the gears are nice and kind of bring the whole thing together where the truck isn't working hard and then has tons of power when it wants, versus relying purely on the power to cruise easier. Supercharger > Gears, but the two together are sweet.

    Excellent discussion! I’m deciding my build sheet now.

    thinking 5:29’s with 34-37” tires. Possible gear weight in back would be 500-1000 pounds.

    Thanks!

    5.29s, I'm on hwy 30-40% of the time, it makes driving on hwy a better experience, passing is effortless and the rpm difference is so minor I don't really notice it at the same speed.

    I have headers and regear, probably going with Harrop soon, on skinny 35s.

    So, as of last week I was stuck on 4.88. Now I’m leaning more toward 5.29 on 35s. I have my install appt tomorrow. How’s the gas mileage on 5.29? I’ve heard mixed reviews on that.

    I think it depends on your driving style. 5.29’s will be awesome for city driving

    I have headers too, I'm avg 14 to 16mpg, on hwy it's pretty consisten around 15 to 16mpg.

    And you’re on 35s? That’s not bad and would be a big improvement for me if that’s the case.

    Its all leverage. A few RPMs wont matter if every rpm is way easier to turn. Im more concerned with taking a wet corner with 5.29s and 35s. Thats a crap ton of low end power on slick ground

    285/75r18 yoko x-at 10 ply, true od is 35.1

    Its fine, I added powertrax as well, it actually turns much better, traction control doesn't kick in when detect inner tire spin and cuts power.

    Gained 0 mpg on 37” tires. Sometimes think 4.88 would get better mpg, but concluded something in between stock and 5.29 isn’t going to help. Love the 5.29 gears, truck is a beast.
    Non-issue, traction/stability control works same regardless of gears.

    I added a powertrax too like Downy, and I always run with the traction control fully disabled but never had any issues breaking the rear end loose unless I want to. Even with the powertrax I can light up the rear easily (when I want), but as far as wet conditions and corners I haven't had any issues that make the truck harder to handle than stock. Though I wouldn't consider my throttle to be touchy like some Tundra owners experience.

    Had the truck re-geared today and went with the 5.29. Can’t say it feels different, but maybe that’s because I’m not pushing it or risking anything during the break in period. I’m hoping I made the right choice, we’ll see.

    I think you’ll feel it once you drive it a little more aggressively. Were you paying attention to your shift points and RPMs at certain speeds? Before and after should be noticeable. In my old Dodge Ram, I went from 3.55s to 4.10s. This was a manual so I definitely felt it a little easier. Loved it!

    Just wait till it breaks in and you can really get on it. I will probably never go over 33 inch tires, I’m thinking I may go to 4.88s with a locker/limited slip some day. Hoping I don’t regret that. I do like to cruise at 80. And I do haul stuff now and again. I would love to feel what 5.29‘s are like on stock or 33 inch tires. And make my decision from there.

    I did notice it does shift a little sooner. Also noticed going down hill it holding on to one of the low gears which kind of freaked me out for a moment. But like I said, I haven’t punched it.

    You won’t see the full benefit without tuning for the gearing and tire size. The gears made a difference, but confuses the truck a bit. Adjusting the tune for them made a noticeable difference.

    Times like these are when I really miss my manual transmission. No worrying about changing the tuning for the gear change. If the Tundra came in a manual configuration, I’d be all over it today! Like right now I would leave and go get it

    Likewise, miss having a manual transmission. Have mine tuned so can pretend drive it like MT, but it’s not the same.
