Excellent thread all. I never considered having 4x4 when I bought my 2011. Only thing I was thinking was do I want the street truck look or off road look. I ended up going street. Mine has been pretty much stock ever since, up until maybe 3 years ago when I got the dirty deeds trd replacement exhaust. And just last month, I finally decided to switch up the look and got new wheels with ridge grapplers, along with getting it lifted. After reading all of the comments here, it's good to know the 4x2 is still capable for off roading without going too extreme.

don't need 4x4 when you start, just get some better tires and a winch. The toyota A Trac system is pretty good. unless you going deep mud, rock craw, or snow. you don't really need 4x4.

4x2's are pretty much worthless on anything other than fire roads. Just take the hit now and get a 4x4. Once you start wheeling your 4x2 and start getting pinstripes and scratches and dents, it'll be that much more harder to sell the truck.

    Go try it once.

    See if you like it.

I played golf once and it sucked.

If you get the itch to go further than get a 4X4 but dont get rid of something that may work for ya.

Most of the over landing I ever did out west was on dirt roads and never needed four wheel drive.
I forgot to put it in four wheel most of the time.

Don't listen to this dude. If you don't take the truck off roading or need a 4x4 for steep boat ramps then in a southern city like Dallas you would be buying something you don't need. I have owned both. I had a 2wd F150 with limited slip and would pull boats off ramps other 2wds could not. Too many 4x4 pavement princesses in DFW.

OP, I agree with @Gotyour6 , go try it first and see if you just liked the idea or if it is something that you will really get into. I have had a 2 WD truck for more than 20 years, with several offroad camping trips, and never really needed the 4 WD. Yes, I could have gone a little further if I had it; I had to turn around a few times, but I still had fun. I now have a 4 WD and most of the places where I go and bought the truck because I thought I would need the 4 WD there, I can still go without switching to 4 WD.
So, if you have enough money to take the hit, go for it, otherwise evaluate it a little more and make sure you really want to get into serious overlanding.

Agreed, it is nice to have it when you need it, but if you don't have it and don't really need it, it is going to be a huge financial hit just to get something that you don't really know if you need it.
We all have opinions, and it is easy to say " Do It" if we do not have to pay for it. I suggest a little more evaulation of the situation. A 2WD Tundra is very capable.

I’ll throw my .02 in here. My 08 tundra was a 2wd and I live in the city( southern Cali). Never in my mind did it cross my mind that I would enjoy wheeling with my 4x4 I have now. Of course ur 2wd can get u a lot of places but 4x4 will get u even more. All it takes is one time out and ur going to want more. Don’t ask me how I know, I haven’t even done anything fast and I still want more and more and more.

now I’ll show u this video here of me pulling out my cousin as he wasn’t 4x4. I still get giggles watching how I drag his ass out lol

Life to short trade for 4wd. Then overland or do day trips and have no worries. This forum full of bad influences, that why I love it.

Last Tundra was 1WD. With an Auburn and STmaxx tires, it did alright on muddy TX ranch roads. Current one is just a 2WD but toyota calls it 4WD. Debating if it is worth putting lockers in.

My guess is that you are looking at around $10K to trade for a similar truck in 4WD. My suggestion is to get a beater if you want to do serious offroad stuff that a 2WD (1WD with a rear locker) cant handle. Or better yet, just get a ride from a buddy with a 4WD. Let him pay for the truck and deal with the mess.

Should be able to get a locker done for ~$2-3K.

Can never hurt to get some recovery gear and be familiar with it. Also, there is usually a guy with a bro dozer around anywhere there is a mud hole so you can count on free pull outs. Just make sure to get a dynamic type recovery rope.

I think we got it, he’s just being funny, although kinda makes sense that a 4 wheel drive tow truck can get closer to your stuck 4wheeler as opposed to a 2 wheel drive tow truck. I thought it was funny and ironic and hit the nail on the head for this post @alpinepro4

Depends entirely on where you live and what you want to do with the truck. I have not needed 4WD once in the last 30+ years of driving including hundreds of miles off road. These are mostly forest service roads so not much in the way of traction risk. I do not drive in the snow.

As a result, my Tundra was thousands of $ cheaper, I get better gas mileage, tighter turning radius, less maintenance, lighter weight. It was harder to find since a large percentage of Tundras are 4X4 but I was not going to get anything but 2WD. Glad I did.

Get a 4x4 or better yet get a Tacoma or secondary vehicle for that. Tundra is a big boat to have in the woods. I had a lifted YJ years ago and that was a blast off road.

I did the same thing. After my last 6 vehicles being 4x4 I went 4x2 this time. Mine was financial. I bought my son a Jeep JK for his 16th birthday so I knew I needed a cheap payment since I’d be paying for two. This is my second Tundra and won’t be my last. My plan for now is to pay off his Jeep in the next two year and find a 19 or 20 pro to upgrade to. I didn’t use my 4 wheel drive often but it was nice to have when I needed it. Till then I can steal my sons Jeep when I need a off-road fix.

Tough call, for me 4x4, may only need it once or twice a year or even never in a year, but its there if I do need it. I am sure you will make the best choice for you OP and enjoy the heck out of that Tundra.

My first Tundra was 2WD and it was fine for me. I had a chance to trade a few months ago and didnt lose any money getting 4WD this time. I will rarely need it but it was nice to have a few weeks ago on a boat ramp covered in algae. I used that ramp frequently in my old truck but the new one made it much easier!

    Get 4x4.

I had 4x4 Tacoma , never left pavement. So when I got tundra went with 4x2. Now overhanding bug has caught me always have remorse.

Thinking of buying a used 4 runner to turn into dedicated over landing rig.
