I bought my 2001 from a city boy, who apparently hadn't used it. I had the same issues as described above by multiple individuals. It would blink, sound like it was engaging but didn't. I kept trying, and got lucky once. I drove it forward, and backward, and finally put it back in 2wd. The next time I tried, it didn't take as long and I drove several miles on dirt and gravel. The more often I did it, the easier it was to get in 4wd. Now, it goes in on the first try, and I try and engage it at least once a month or more. Don't know if it was dried grease on the gears or what.
