Know anyone that has broken any of them from regular use on 35's and not geared?

You will not "break" it, more so added wear and tear due to extra heat to get the same amount of performance from a stock tire and drivetrain truck. For instance, for a truck with 35's to get up to 60 mph with stock gearing takes more energy than the same truck in factory form.

    Make sense?

Not so much about breakage, less mpg and more wear from higher temps. This refers to 5.7 transmissions. We have a 6 speed transmission with two overdrive gears(5th and 6th), and also have torque converter lockup on 4th, 5th, and 6th gear. When running 35” tires you will almost never reach torque converter lockup in 6th gear, this means lower mpg, and slightly higher transmission temperature because the torque converter is slipping instead of locked. If you have 35” tires, pay attention while downhill under very light throttle, you can feel when the torque converter locks in 6th gear. Tundras with smaller tires will cruise at highway speed in 6th gear torque converter locked.

Didn't know that about the torque converter. Not sure I've ever felt the torque converter lock though, even on the original tires TBH.

You are in good shape then.

One thing I don’t hear about being under-geared is the possible benefit of less stress on trans at highway speeds. A higher geared diff is good for low speeds and an under-geared diff good for high speeds? Anyone am I wrong here?

    I understand your point here.

So, with that chart recommendation list, would you slide all those recommendations to the right to factor in weight/wind drag?

If so, how many blocks would you slide? Based on average weight and normal wind drag.

One thing I'm not seeing asked is what about the speedometer? How do 35s ungeared compare to geared? Stock tires on my other car are 215 55 r16. When I bought it it has 225 40 zr18. Bigger wheels, but smaller overall OD. Even that small difference of about 3% puts me 5 under at 70 mph. That's why I'm planning on some 235 45 zr18s pretty soon.

I would push one block to the power side. If the chart said 4.88, if 5.13’s were available, that’s what I would choose. I went through this on my 2nd re-gear on the heep. I went 4.88’s and a buddy went 5.13. Same setup and i regretted it.

Some areas to consider also is pinion gear size. Depending on what the purpose is for the vehicle. Smaller ring and pinions are known for failure by having to much gear.

I really enjoy my 4.88s, hind sight being what it is I kind of wish I waited for the infamous 5.29s. I would like a little more grunt. Do I need it it? No! Do I want it? Yes

Great thing about the Tundra is it actually has power. Jeeps...lol. You can get away with it.

I can’t wait for LS time.

My buddy has a jeep, currently running 35s. He wants to go up to 37s. He wanted more lift, I told him, he better go to deeper gears.

I thought you already went LS. When do you plan on swapping?

I need to point out that this is getting mixed up with 5.7 and 4.7 Tundras. You overgrown behemoths are very different and will get different results, this is first gen land.
    :boink:
For 35s with stock gears the speedo will read really slow compared to actual speed. For 35s with gears it depends on the gears, 4.56 will read close to correct while 4.88 or up will read faster than actual speed.

My truck has 33s and 4.56, it was about 8% over actual speed (says 54 when GPS says 50). I corrected my speedo and now it's dead on.

Yes in theory but no I practice. If you had a very torquey diesel that could keep you going at low rpm, sure. Or if you were on the Wyoming highways where it is completely flat maybe.

But our automatic transmissions downshift at the slightest grade. When i had 35’s on stock 4.30 gears, the trans was shifting like crazy on the freeway. Every overpass, gradation, hill.

Really? I don't get this at all in mine. I run mine in tow/haul mode though and am typically going around 75-80 on the highway, so maybe it's always in 5th or something lol. I still get about 15-16 MPG on the highway though, so who knows?
