I agree with StoneyWV. I was looking at Tundra and Ford Super Duty F250 for potential purchase, obviously Tundra won out. Looking at the two trucks:

Ford: 6.2 liter engine, 6 speed tranny, 3.73 axle ratio
Tundra: 5.7 liter engine, 6 speed tranny, 4.30 axle ratio

By using the transmission gear ratios with the axle ratio to get the overall ratio, it was surprising how close the two trucks are.

    Ford: 1st 15.55, 4th 4.25, 6th 2.57
    Tundra: 1st 14.32, 4th 4.30, 6th 2.53

The Ford is bound to get less fuel economy, .5 liter larger engine displacement, and 500 to 800 pounds heavier.
Most of the newer half ton trucks are getting better fuel economy with one or more of the fowling.
    Smaller displacement turbo charged engines.
    Engines with cylinder deactivation.
    Engines with start stop technology.
More tranny gears, and maybe higher axle ratio.

I wanted to avoid all of those things (not necessarily more tranny gears) both the Ford and Tundra did avoid them. But the Tundra just had more of what I needed and wanted and of course reliability, besides I really don't need a 3/4 ton truck. I didn't want to wait for the new Tundra as I would have been afraid to buy for a few years.

So far I love this truck but only had a couple of months and haven't yet pulled my boat, although I expect to be impressed.

you made a good choice 10 years from now you will still get what you paid for 2020 is probably the best year for resale if they stop making the 5.7 in 4th gen

Oh and one other thing I forgot to mention. The use of direct fuel injection, that also has a tendency to be troublesome. I'll take more old fashion simplicity any day!

We just moved about 20 miles up into the mountains and I wanted to improve my mileage. We bought a VW Beetle TDI that gets 45-50 mpg. Now we have a reliable great gas mileage car and a bad ass real mans truck! Great combination with good combined mpg.

To restate what several have said regarding mileage, I think what you need to look at is final drive ratio (i.e. transmission and rear gears) and the resultant engine RPM at highway speeds. My Tundra with 4.30 gears shows pretty much the same RPM at 70 as my Ford did with 3.55s. In fact, in my my short ownership of the Tundra, I've found top gear to be too steep for even a lighter trailer and it best to lock out 6th gear while towing to keep the engine from lugging and shifting back and forth between 5th and 6th (mine does this even in towing mode). In theory and as an added benefit, the lower gears (numerically higher) in the Tundra should improve mileage around town where you are accelerating from a stop and thereby getting the engine up into its power band sooner. I think this to be especially true with the Tundra in that I believe it is running a pretty low first gear in the transmission, which combined with 4.30s makes for low gearing from a stop.

As someone mentioned above, Ford is doing many of the same things with a 10-speed transmission. I had a loaner Lariat with the 10-speed and the big Ecoboost for a couple of months when my last Ford was in the shop. That 10-speed really kept the turbo Ford in its happy spot pretty much all the time when in the throttle. That Ford setup was super fast, and would slip the tires a little on up-shift all the way up to 40-50 mph on many streets.

I just towed my daughters Gx470 that was packed to gills including drivers seat from Ohio-Florida. Tundra platinum crew max bed loaded, cab loaded with only room for driver. I averaged 9.8-10.3 mpg with a steady speed of 70-75 most of the way. I had tow haul locked in and never had a need for power. I’ve towed a lot of things from coast to coast and the Tundra is right up there with the best of them. Ram constantly hunted for gears. I know I was packed over weight but really didn’t have much choice. It was either load it or throw it away. I must say the Tundra really impressed me from smooth take offs, sudden abrupt stops due to a trailer issue, to going through the mountains it was rewarding knowing I was in a Toyota that had power. The best of both worlds. Oh yea I’m running 10 ply 315/70/17 ridge grapplers & I’m also stock height on Rock Warrior wheels. So there’s extra tire to turn.

Personally... I like the 4.30 gears because it helps alot with a taller tire.
I know some guys go straight to a 4.88 or 5.29 gear when running 35-37" tires... but after a couple weeks on my 35's, I honestly see no need for more gearing. The 4.30's handle the bigger tire just fine. 37's might be a different story... but I think 35's and 4.30 gears are still a safe combo.

I also remember a time that gear swaps were unheard of... and guys were running around on 44" Super Swampers with 3.08 gearing.

I like my 4:30, especially with double over drive.

I love the 4:30s. Even after going up to a 34” tire It still rips my 5000lb+ boat around with ease.

    No issues w/37's & 4.30 gears after 10k miles.
    Nannies off exclusively.
S4 on the stick around town.
Currently 12.3mph interstate travel @75mph(GPS) w/400lbs in the bed+ driver and Transferflo 46g tank.

That was the average last Moab trip. Temps in the 100's if that matters.

There should be a code on a white sticker on the driver side door jamb. A quick Google search of the code should give you the info.

My dad has a 2019 RAM Laramie with the tow package and my brother has a 2020 RAM REBEL. I'm at 14.7 almost entirely city and they are usually pretty much the same, with the REBEL usually actually being work than my 2018 Tundra. I was surprised. I agree that the numbers they publish aren't very accurate. I know the feds let them add 1mpg for things like stop / start. My brother's REBEL even has the 43VOLT e-Torque thing. (One thing that does is make the stop start unnoticeable. )

    I'm going to guess it's a 3.91 ratio.
