Okay. I'm trying for the life of me to figure out what gear ratio my truck has, and what ratio my dad's truck has, but everywhere I look I get different information.

My truck: 2000 Tundra Limited 4x4 TRD OR axle code A03A which indicates a 4.10 gear. Using the Options lookup tool on toyota.com it tells me that I actually have 3.909 gears as the standard option.

My dad's truck: 2002 Tundra SR5 AC 4x4 with axle code A03A. doesn't say anything about axle ratios with the options lookup tool.

My truck definitely has shorter gears than my dads. locked converter sits at 2000 RPMS roughly at 60 whereas my dad's sits at 2000 at roughly 65. same sized tires. (265/70/r16)

What gives? my initial guess was that I had 4.10s and my dad has 3.909s, but the options lookup disagrees. I've scoured the internet trying to find specific information but I haven't found anything conclusive. why is there so much misinformation out there?

yeah I know I can do that, but I figured there's gotta be a way to tell from the other information. It's a lot of work to make a special trip all the way over to my parent's just to test axle ratios. I was just curious if some guru had some wisdom about these things and could help me.

I'll do that at some point when I'm over there, I was just curious if there was a way to tell from the documentation.

I was tired of reading all the false info online. Jacked her up, spun tires and confirmed I have 4.10’s. My axle code is wrong, says rear diff is open.

yeah but there goes what little gas mileage I had, and I don't plan on keeping the truck if I can't get the frame replaced.

Get the vin number from both trucks and go to Toyota dealer to find out. I have a 2002 Toyota with v8 mine came with 3:90 gear ratio from factory. The only other way to find out for sure is remove pumpkin and look at the ring gear. It will be stamped with the gear ratio

I was kidding, kinda. Only real way is the hard way of counting. Pulling the third member out to look for engraved numbers is way more work.

I don't always believe references and unless you've owned the truck since new it's hard to know if the parts inside are original.

Well my dad’s had his for at least 10 years, so I would 100% believe that it’s original. With mine I have no idea. I would guess it’s original, but obviously gave no way of knowing other then it looks like it’s been on there for s really long time.

According to that, both have 3.909 gears.

Now I’ve seen just about every combination possible between the two trucks except the one I believe to be right. :annoyed::frusty:

Figured it might worth shot to mention.
So a 2000 Limited and a 2002 SR5 would have the same transmission?

Yes. They both have the same a340F four speed auto. The tundras didn’t get the five speed auto until the vvti engines came out.

As far as I know... they both have dedicated transmission coolers, trailer lights, and frame-mounted hitches, but neither show ‘tow package’ on the options lookup sheets.
Just curious. I’m the type of person that likes to know everything about my vehicles.

Interesting. Mine has the tow package and it's the same items you mentioned, could have been added at the dealership I suppose.

Mine came with 3.91 but went to 4.56.

Dad has just over 200k on it, mine has 226k. Yes, his trans fluid was completely flushed a couple years ago after the pink milkshake incident.

Sounds like they have the same gears but different levels of maintenance. Next time you’re at the truck, spin and count. Easiest way to know for sure.

how would that affect cruising RPMs with the torque converter locked?

also, my transmission shifts MUCH smoother than his does for some reason, especially the TC lockup.

I know this is a old thread, but I found this while researching my newly purchased 2006 Toyota Sequoia. Everything I am finding says the axle is 4.10 ratio. I have also a 2005 Tundra V8 and I know it has 3.90 gears in the rear as I had a Detroit truetrac installed in it and it rebuilt. Whats interesting is you seem to think your rearend is 4.10, PLUS your saying your transmission is smoother, especially the lock up. Well the first thing I noticed on the Sequoia was the transmission is quite a bit smoother on the Sequoia than my Tundra, especially the lock up. Oh and yes the 2005 Tundra has the 5 speed auto, same as my 2006 Sequoia. So with you having 4.10 ratio as well as the smoother shifts and lock up, makes me wonder if someone swapped a Sequoia tranny and rearend in your Tundra. Both my 2005 Tundra and the Sequoia have similar low mileage and both transmissions have had regular service using factory Toyota fluid, so not really any other variables.

Well, it definitely has a four speed, not a five speed. I never did find out definitively what rear end ratio it has for sure, but with this truck, who knows?

Well the four speed vs the five speed doesn't really matter. I suspect that even the four speed sequoia shifts smoother and has a easier lock up just as my 5 speed sequoia is smoother than my 5 speed tundra. But if you truly have 4.10 gears, and your tranny is smoother than your dads, those two things seem like a big coincidence (too big in my opinion). Nothing wrong with it being a sequoia tranny and axle though if it is.

The drivers side door is a sticker with the body code, transmission codes, rear ended codes. Also use the vin number to get the information about what gear ratio you have.

One of the first things a maintenance guy working on old equipment learns is to be skeptical of records nearly 20 years old. Such old records are historical, and may be accurate and helpful, but they may also be total bs regards current configuration. The only way to know your differential ratio with certainty is to chock the front wheels, jack up the rear wheels, put in neutral, manually turn a rear wheel one full turn while counting the driveshaft revolutions. Should take about ten minutes.

I suspect your original conclusion was correct; i.e. yours has 4.10, your dad's 3.91. The proportion is about right given your info on tach and speedometer readings.

You beat me to it. I was about to say the same thing about the door codes. My door codes on my 2005 Tundra say nothing about the Detroit Truetrac I have in the rearend, but I assure you it is there. I may eventually swap out the gears in it and go to 4.56 if I decide to put 35s on it. It currently has 33s.
