So why can't you use 87 octane and make more power? I mean, is it at the limit of what can be had with the lower octane? What does VR offer?

Sorry I’m not a tech guy at all and have no way to answer your question. I have the jb4 and just use it as advised by them. I would say if you send them an email they will answer any of your questions. Go to their website and initiate contact via email. I don’t have the VR so again no answer for that. Hopefully someone in this thread can actually help…:sorry:

May seem a dumb question, I want to order a JB4. Do you have to disconnect your android auto every time you change maps ect. Because of the blutooth?

Thanks to those with more knowledge than I about all of this. Waiting on my truck, but the JB4 and PedalCommander will be here waiting when it does get here in a couple of weeks. This won't be a DD, so figure might as well have fun with it. Will just stick to 93 octane as I am too lazy to keep up with mixing, but am sure it will still be plenty of power for me while tooling around doing chores.

    Couple things going on.

    1. Because, as you increase boost/power over stock you are also increasing cylinder pressure which is widdling down on the overhead you have with the 87 octane. There is not a lot of overhead available to increase boost with 87 over the stock tune. In fact, if you look in the Ecoboost tune, they will limit maximum boost as it detects lower octane. This is why 3.5L Ecoboost pick up like 35 WHP and like 70 ft-lbs of torque just switching from 87 to 93 octane on the stock tune. One the top Ecoboost tuners claims these numbers from his auto octane tune based on octane, so virtually zero gain running the tune on 87:

    87 octane - 0-10whp

    89 octane - 20-30whp

    91 octane - 30-45whp

    93 octane - 35-55whp

    E30 (mix of 93 and e85)- 45-70whp

    2. Because the JB4 is spoofing the engine into running at higher air loads(boost), the engine is continuing to run the ignition timing as if it is at lower boost, which is more advanced. So in order to allow the timing to not become overly advanced, you have to offset it with additional octane. below is a screen shot of one of the boarderline spark tables in my Ecoboost tune as an example. If you are accelerating at 3000 RPM, and the PCM thinks its at an air load of 1.3, it wants to target a spark angle of 4.5* (the green box). However, you have the JB4 increasing the boost without the PCM knowing, so in reality the engine is actually at an air load of 1.6. Well at 1.6 it should really be at -.8* of spark, 5.3* less advanced. So you have to run a higher octane fuel to make up for that 5.3* of timing difference.

I appreciate the explanation as it may help other people. I was just looking for a year or no, if we were already at the limit of 87. As for your eco, so if you run 87, is it detuning it from what the truck is rated at stock?

I would say yes, you are about at the limits of 87 on the stock tune. The iForce and Ecoboost are extremely similar in both power and specs(same compression ratio for example).

No, Ford always rated the Ecoboost on 87. So they increased in power on higher octane. If you look at the specs on the 2015-2017 Navigator, they rated them on 93 octane. Same engine as my 2014 F150 but my truck was spec'd at 365hp/420 tq and the Navigator was 380/460.

The 2017-2020 3.5 Ecoboosts allow for a much larger increase than my truck and its across the entire RPM range. So they can pick up a huge amount of torque down low as well as a good amount of HP up top. It was rated at 375hp/470 torque, but on the Dyno they make 350-360 whp on 93 vs ~320 on 87. This is consistent across multiple tuners that have dynod the stock trucks. So basically, on 93, the Ecoboost is making nearly as much HP at the wheels as its rated for at the crank.

Just got my JB4 and finally got to test with the 91 tune and wow what a difference. Would there be any benefit doing an exhaust, intake, etc while running the JB4? Or would you need a specific tune to gain anything?

Ok. It's nice that Ford stock tune would increase power with higher octane. In 2014 a friend had a Silverado w/V6. I was looking up specs and read that on E85 it went up in hp/tq. But in my 14 Tundra 5.7, E85 made less power. Yrs ago I drove my bosses' 13 Ecoboost, and that small bump in tq but at alot lower rpm vs my V8 felt better when pulling a loaded trailer. I will eventually get a JB4 or something for my 22 but maybe not if I have to run premium all the time.

My truck was delivered on Friday. For those that know way more about this than I do (which is just about everyone) is there a break in period where I shouldn't run the JB4 and Pedal Commander. I have both ready to put on, but don't want to create issues if I need to run for a thousand miles or so before adding them so things can wear in as the factory expects?

Slap it on and leave it on map 1. Pedal commander won't hurt anything so install that and adjust to your liking. Think I have mine set at City -3

I agree here. You can even have both of them disabled if you wanted to, but have them installed so whenever the desire hits, you can enable them. That being said, I'd do just as Eddie said. The Pedal Commander will become how you like it. I know some people run Sport (which is too much for me) and others run City (I'm at City -1).

JB4 does not address the initial dead pedal area. The PC will fix that issue and the JB4 will add the additional boost once you get on the skinny pedal

Well, they're both installed and nothing melted down, so I guess step 1 is down. Seems the app defaulted to Map 1 so I changed it for now to Map 0 as I am guessing the dealer filled up with the cheapest thing he could. Once I fill up the first time with 93 I will switch over.

Maybe a dumb question, but I don't like to assume with these things. I am guessing the JB4 will start back at the setting you left it at? I won't be monitoring things with the app on a normal basis or changing Map Settings so I am assuming it's kind of set it and forget it?

I like it and yes it made a noticeable difference. It’s fun in sport mode since the truck stays in a lower gear. You stay in the power more.

I’m willing to let it go if someone wants it. If not then I’ll keep it. Figured if someone wants it they can save some dough.

Can you elaborate on this? I am looking at one for my SR5, but debating the Bluetooth kit or not. How do you change MAPs without the app?

You would have to set it up first via the app. Put it in the mode you want and then set the MAP and it should save it for that mode. I purchased the BT version. Afterwards I don't even turn the app on unless I want to watch the gauges or make changes.

Whatever map you run in 'Normal' mode is the same map that will be used for 'Tow Haul' and 'Tow+'. That being said, I've no issues on Map 1 or Map 2 in any modes.

First time using the 93 octane tune (Map 3), while cruising down the highway I notice stutter. I don't feel this with the stock tune or Map 2. Any ideas?
