I can see where these numbers might get a little confusing, and in reality don't mean actual weight. For instance, I will use my truck since I have all the numbers right in front of me. My single rear wheel 1 ton has a capacity of 3808 lbs with my chosen options. If I had not had so many options, the truck would take over 4000 lbs in the bed. That would be 1.5-2 ton truck right? Not exactly. My rear axle weight rating is 7050 lbs.

7050-3808=3242 lbs. This is about right what my rear axle weight is unloaded. The truck front axle weight rating is 5600. My front axle weight empty is around 4500 lbs. This would make sense due to my truck weighing in at ~7750 lbs empty (4500+3242=7742 lbs). Gross vehicle weight rating is 11500 lbs for my model truck.

In reality, I can't just put 3808 lbs in the bed of my truck. Here is why:

Gross vehicle weight rating is 11500 lbs.
Gross vehicle empty weight is 7750 lbs
11500-7750=3758lbs so I came up a little short than my posted 3808 lbs capacity. Most likely, some of that weight would in fact transfer to the front axle, which I do have a spare 1100 lbs. This is also the reason gooseneck hitches mounting points are a few inches in front of the rear axle to transfer the weight.

Following all the weight ratings can be a struggle. You can be good on one part and over on another. So frustrating.

Your rear axle rating is 4000 lbs, and I would be willing to bet if you pulled on a CAT scale empty, the rear axle weight of your truck would be around 2600-2700 lbs. Add in the 1300 lb capacity and you have around 4000 lb axle weight rating. Does this make sense to you?

This is what needs to be checked when hauling/towing:

    Gross vehicle weight rating GVWR
    Gross combined weight rating GCWR
Gross axle weight rating (front and rear)
    Tongue weight/capacity rating
Tire weight rating- the P metric craptastic tires that come on 1/2 tons these days actually exceed any capacity the truck is rated for. When (if ever) you have a 3/4 or 1 ton you really need to pay attention to load index ratings as well. Just the other day a Tundras member showed me he had LR E tires with a maximum tire pressure rating of 65 psi and load rating of 3200 lbs. Learn something new every day.

On to your next question about O'Keefe Music foundation. I have no affiliation with this great cause other than donating money. To me, I feel music should be a part of every child's life.

The pickup classes of 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, and 1 ton have absolutely nothing to do with the trucks payload capacity or tow ratings in modern trucks. They are holdover class names from way back when the payload was 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton, but modern trucks surpass these payloads. The classes were not updated to reflect this, so you are better off viewing the class as having nothing to do with actual payload.

The Tundra is on the low end of the current payload numbers for most half ton trucks, and it is most certainly NOT anywhere near a 3/4 or 1 ton in capability. It's frame is a half ton frame. Period.

Like @AzureNightmare said, the halfton, 3/4 ton and one ton designations are out of date. Probably better to just think of them as 1500, 2500 and 3500 series trucks. The highest payload you can get in a 4x2 Tundra SR is about 1700 lbs, which would be middle of the road for a 1500 from the big 3. A GM 1500 with max trailering package can have a payload over 2000 lbs. A Ford F-150 with their max payload package can have a value approaching 3000 lbs, I've been told.

Going to be honest even if they say it is rated at that I still wouldn't put 3k in the bed of a F150 or any other 1500 series truck for that matter.

Agreed but it would be nice not to have to worry about tongue weight when towing, say, a 7000 lb trailer

This is a great conversation to have.

I have always said the Tundra is one bad ass 1/2 ton. Sometimes people forget the 1/2 ton part.

The reason I bated you for this conversation is when people start saying “towed the shuttle (actually pulled)” or “I towed a 15000 lb backhoe plus trailer (so that was probably 20000 lbs)” this gives people the idea that its ok.

We have new members or even guests every day searching the forum for information. We owe it to them to be honest so they purchase the right truck or equipment for the long haul.

I have done all the figuring from my owners manual for towing, trailer weight, tongue weight, axle weight, and all is well but it still leaves the 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton labels a mystery. I wish there was more definite information as to how they come up with the different ratings. Thanks for the info. Still confused but will get over it.

    ColoradoTJ,
That is a great mission for young and the old who enjoy playing music. You know sometimes all it takes is a chance to make a difference. Music has been a part of my children's school curriculum, and we thought that was a necessity. Good place for donations. Also that keeps kids off of the streets. Nice job!

The 1/2 , 3/4, 1 ton designations are just outdated. When they were originally used, that was the payload of the truck. As time went on the payloads got bigger, but the designations stayed the same. It's so obsolete that @Cpl_Punishment is on the right track of just thinking of them as 1500, 2500, and 3500 series instead of associating any weight with them.

That is what I have come to the conclusion of, that they are as you say outdated. So ya agreed. The Tundra meets all my needs and is an awesome truck.

I would be at the dealership as the rolled off the truck if they would make a 3/4 ton, gas or diesel with crewmax and 6ft bed, if it had lockers and winch, even better.

Once upon a time, Toyota made 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks.

Back in high school, a friend of mine had an early 80s 3/4 ton truck similar to this one:

    upload_2020-6-30_8-44-35.jpg

It is funny, that little truck has a higher payload rating than the current Tundras.

I also found a Toyota commercial for a 1 ton truck:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1bVH2gT5Mo

The 3/4 ton and 1 ton market would probably be a tough segment to get back into for Toyota, but if they did, I think they could eventually make a name for themselves in that space. It would probably take some time to convert the big 3 die hards, but once they realize the Toyota reliability, it is a no brainer.

LOOKED AT AN F250 TREMOR THIS WEEKEND. THAT IS A BADASS F250 3/4 TON DIESEL WITH OVER 1000FT LBS TORQUE. ONLY THING DIDN'T LIKE IT IS A FORD, AND THAT UGLY, TINY, USELESS SLIDING REAR VIEW WINDOW THEY COME WITH.

Is the Tremor the new gas engine or some kind of off road package? Ford never made that clear.

I thought it was Ram that had 1000 ft-lbs in the new Cummins.
