Ain't that the truth. TFL is a joke. The only videos they make that are remotely close to decent are the tow tests in Colorado I think it is. Even then, it's iffy and to be taken with a grain of salt.

while i like their tow test format, the main issue is that the manufacturers almost always send them trucks in the middle of the winter when its 20 degrees. It really doesnt tell you much.

For example, my max tow package F150 is rated for 11,100 lb towing. I tow a 5500 lb travel trailer around Utah. My truck tows like a locomotive in the fall, winter and spring, but as soon as its 80F outside I have to start watching temperatures like a hawk. I ended up upgrading the intercooler, radiator, lower temp tstat, diluted the coolant to 40% and an external oil cooler before my temperatures really came under control in hot weather.

You wouldnt have gotten that from the TFL video where they maxed out a 2014 F150 up the ike. It flew up the hill.

It doesn't help either that the hosts are easily wooed by flashy doodads and trinkets, and don't know shit about using a truck for truck stuff. It's all about "ooo, look how big and shiny this screen is and look at all this buttons!" instead of something like "so here's how the tow package is set up, the various off road driving modes and the advanced crawl control systems. Let's hook up an offroad trailer, show you how they work and go wheeling to test them out" or "let's run this truck hard for a month hauling loads, doing chores, pulling trailers and doing basic dude stuff". They're a bunch of toddlers.

People are getting more and more lazy by the day. How hard is it to turn a key or hold a button for a couple of seconds to roll a window up?

I saw one where they tested the three domestic heavy duty off road packages. They were going on and on about how the GM just had the automatic locking rear differential and "it would be so much better if you could lock it yourself ahead of time blah blah blah" and then lo and behold the GM got through everything that the other two trucks did just fine, even when they took it on a worse line to try to deliberately get it stuck.

not sure it is being lazy or ....the manufacturers convince us that the something has become the new normal, a person accepts it, then every vehicle that does not have this new "normal"..... is deemed unacceptable.

When I got my drivers licence in the late 70's my first car was a used '68 Mercury Montego with a 302 engine.

    I remember two things.

    1) It had a lap only seat belt. There was a big stink from people when full body seat belts came in. (They are not making me wear this thing!) I remember how many people I knew drove with the full seat belt attached and behind them. That's how the sliding seat belt came out and would wrap around you when you got in.

    2) The 302 engine. A neighbor had a new 80's Mercury Marquis. He looked at the '68 302 in my car and told me I wish I could put that motor into my car. His motor although the same size looked so much bigger and better I thought. His engine bay was full of stuff. My engine bay was so empty and you could climb into it.

I am all for anything that improves my chance of surviving a crash and keeps my truck from becoming a target to thieves.

This is exactly it IMO. This is why we have seen grown men complaining about outdated interiors (thinking of GM and Toyota). I’m like, “bitch buy a truck because you need the utility, not so you can look at the interior.” :bananadead::rofl:

And in this context, not changing things for a long time is seen as lazy and behind the times instead of reliable and hassle free.

I don’t think Toyota is perfect by any means, and there are things that bug me about my truck. But I needed a bigger vehicle than my 4Runner to take my family and our gear to remote places, and I wanted the very best chance of coming back every time. I can scrape my way through tighter trails better than an HD truck. The lack of payload bothers me though.

I'm cross shopping a F-150 Lariat Sport 501A w/pano roof vs a Tundra Platinum w/ Advanced Packages, both are $62k. The Tundra seems to have more features for same price like the HUD, rearview mirror screen, power side steps, and full rear sliding glass. The F-150 is better looking, has flat cabin for storage, easier access to bed, and Ford has mastered ergonomics inside the truck. For the record, I currently own a 2014 F-150 3.5L EcoBoost with 131,000 miles and have never had issues with engine or turbos.

TFL has become an infomercial for all of their sponsors. Now they’re getting into the “overlanding” craze trying to get more sponsors. TFL is boring as witnessed by their worthless trip to Alaska IMO.

But if you are paying 60k for the truck whether it has plastic seats or seats made from endangered seal fur regardless, then I want the the seal fur.

Also, from another standpoint, not changing things for a long time means you have to change everything all at once and end up with a 3rd gen Tundra. Toyota is probably the only one that can reasonably pull it off but its not enough for the people obsessed with reliability.

    New or used?

If you can wait and order you can get that F150 for probably sub 60. My 21 F150 Lariat 501 with everything was $57k. The F150 was good like you said in terms of ergonomics but that transmission is a killer. I also found that my seats wore really bad and really fast. I had some rattles in the cabin I used folded post-its to fix. Body and paint were good. I had one random blemish that I think if a professional had a chance, could have fixed it. Turning radius blows, but so does the 22 Tundras. Only electrical issue I had is that my rear parking assist. 1/4 of the time there would be no error codes and it would work, 1/4 the time there would be no error codes and it wouldn't work, 1/4 of the time there would be error codes and it worked, and 1/4 time there would be error codes and it wouldn't work. Most odd encounter I've had.

To be fair, I've seen some platinums with mileage and the seats seem to be wearing quick too.

That Alaska trip was a waste of time, but that was Roman's idea and that dude is out of touch and annoying in every video he is in. They need to just leave the show to Nathan, Andre, and Tommy come in once in a while.

My truck was 45k, but I still value my time more than seal fur seats.

Man, that would be something to see—baby seal fur seats. Imagine the outrage on social media.

Lol. My truck is a ‘21…what’s a comparable fully loaded ‘21 Lariat cost?

I have dual climate and CarPlay, but I do have to turn my own head like a peasant when I want to change lanes.

Apples and oranges. I'm comparing 2022 vehicles. The 2021 Tundra is more comparible to a 2011 F-150.

Edit: disregard, I thought your comment was directed towards me.

But your truck is really a 2007. $45k kinda seems like a ripoff from that standpoint.

The only you-tuber I pay close attention to is “The Car Care Nut”. He is a certified master mechanic and post videos of him tearing into the guts of an engine. He knows Toyotas and provides good advice IMO. I’ve never seen Roman get his hands dirty except maybe pumping gas.

This is our fundamental difference. I don’t give two shits about updated features if it means I will likely have to go back to the dealer for anything. I’m allergic to waiting around for other people to fix my stuff for me.

Most people think my truck should cost less because it doesn’t have fancy new features (other than CarPlay and dual climate). At the time, a ‘21 Limited could’ve been bought for $3k more than mine, and it had BSM, heated leather seats, sunroof, etc. What else do you need? Do you need a useless giant screen?

Either way, both my SR5 and the Limited are worth more when the warranty is up than all the others because “muh reliability” is a real, measurable factor, not simply a perception.

shit can happen though, I had a 2013 ram that everyone said would lose the trans or break down constantly, I now have a 2016 platinum tundra.

guess which one wouldn’t start and needed a new fuel pump and ecu update and was at the dealer for a week?

they keep jacking up the price and adding stuff so we can’t win either way.

Good grief, they just took an F150 Lightning they bought new from Michigan to Denver, then fixed it up for a trip to Alaska, did the Alaska trip. Also bought a Silverado ZR2 and did paces with it. Also bought a '22 Tundra new in Texas and ran that all over the Southwest, towing from LA into Utah, towing offroad in Utah. You're basically talking out of your ass.
