The used gen 3 market is insane. Platinums selling for Raptor and AT4X money

Yeah. Like, that's great your brand new truck made it home from the dealership with no issues.

What I want to see before I buy one is "Just hit 50k miles on my 2022 Tundra 4x4 CrewMax Platinum that I use for my bricklaying business. I keep forgetting to do oil changes but it's doing fine pulling my 10k lb trailer with 3k lbs of bricks in the back. But it's had nothing go wrong so whatever."

The 2nd Gen was a tank. And I'm not expecting the 3rd to accomplish 1million miles being overloaded most of the time, but I would like it to hit 100k miles without any issues aside from these defects that are hopefully one-and-done issues.

The disconnect is real. But it seems like Toyota is trying to erase it with the 3rd gen. I don’t care the slightest bit what an auto manufacturer says their truck is capable of if it can’t rack up high miles without issue. I could not care any less about lane keeping, the size of the screen, a generator in the bed, cameras everywhere, having the highest towing or payload numbers in its class, most incentives, etc.

I bought my truck because it is far and away the best choice for carrying people and gear anywhere I want, no matter how remote, and getting home every single time. If it can’t do that—just simply be dependable—for high miles, then I don’t want it.

TFL Andre updating his Powerboost experience. I may be interested in a used one for MPG's but would have to put a hirise topper on it for protected cargo room, that's $3k probably. The family consensus is stay with the Sequoia, 15mpg isn't the end of the world.

Hit the nail on the head.....My personal definition of a reliable vehicle is at least 100,000 miles repair free. I fully expect to be diligent on the scheduled maintenance but I don't expect a vehicle to be reliable, durable, and dependable if I don't do all the scheduled maintenance. When my wife's '08 Honda CR-V hit 100,000 miles, all that had been done up till then was scheduled maintenance and new tires. Our '08 CR-V is now at 201,636 miles and while it obviously doesn't drive like new, as long as the transmission and engine stay solid and reliable, I am ok with replacing items that wear out such as struts, a starter, or even a power steering pump if it goes out. At 14 years old the vehicle is paid off, in good shape, and I personally can't stomach constantly having car payments....its a waste of money IMO. We currently own a 2013 Tacoma @132,000 miles (paid off and experienced one major issue that I fixed myself), 2019 Highlander (paid off), and a 2020 CM Tundra which is our only car payment. We bought these vehicles with the expectation of keeping them for a VERY long time (10+ years)....long after they are paid off, hence the reason we own a Honda and 3 Toyotas'.....their reputation for quality and reliability.

Underwhelming I think but I bet it flies off lots. Sounds like they saw an easy gap to fill in their pricing. Seems similar to the 3rd gen Tacoma Trail edition that’s just a Pro-looking SR5 with a rear locker.

Well, if the new Tundras stopped blowing turbos and shitting themselves into limp mode, maybe they'd have a chance to catch fire. But they are too embarrassed by being forced to wear that mustache to be willing to drive enough.

I have to grimace a bit that Ram/Stelantis have developed a twin turbo 6 cylinder engine. Except unlike Toyota, Ram of all companies appear to have arrived at the better solution. It’s called an inline 6. Toyota used to build inline 6’s, with turbos that didn’t shit themselves. Now they give us a V6 twin turbo, an engine architecture that isn’t easy to balance, sounds like thrashy shit no matter what you do to it, and don’t produce a power band as wide as an inline 6.

So now Ram will have an inline 6 twin turbo. Given the inherent primary balance and efficient torque production of the inline 6 it will be silky smooth, and probably make more power under the curve than a V6.

Seeing as how the 3rd Gen Tundra is seemingly no more reliable than any other truck, and Toyota seems to not care about fixing them in a expedited fashion; why not give the new Ram a look once their new “Hurricane” ttI6 shows up? I will be. I love inline 6’s.

Great minds; I read about that engine the other day, and literally my first thought was "...TOYOTA! Explain why YOU didn't come out with this?" LOL

Yeah, sort of like BMW's TT inline 6s. Very smooth and powerful. Space is not an issue in trucks this size so an I6 would easily fit. But the bean counters probably want one basic powerplant that can be adapted across their entire model range so I suspect we'll never see an I6 from Toyota. Shame.

what worries me about the 3.0 I6 is that they have trouble getting an iron block, pushrod, port injected, V8 to not eat cams and lifters.

now they are gunna make a 6 cyl, aluminum, direct injected, variable valve timing, twin turbo reliable?

i suppose what we are seeing is that it is easier to make a small 6 cylinder efficient and reliable than a V8 efficient and reliable.

They're not bringing back old school reliability.

It'll be new school, bristling with complicated, expensive parts.

Just look at what GM did with their new I6.... they put a freaking rubber belt between the engine and transmission. Oh, it'll earn a reputation eventually, as it ends up in post-warranty ownership!

Over the weekend I traded my 2020 Ford F150 Lariat in for the 2022 Tundra Limited. The Ford was my first truck and previously I have been a loyal Infiniti owner for last 2 decades. The one thing that I noticed coming from luxury vehicles is that the Ford F150 even in higher trims was not luxury. For 2 years owning the Ford i had a sense that everything felt loose and made noises like of cheap plastic bending. The suspension was not that of a luxury vehicle and braking was not smooth. I felt for the price I paid for the Lariat I was not getting my monies worth.

Since I had the new Tundra for a few days, it is noticeable better handling, braking and suspension. The interior was solid and certain parts did not squeak or have cracking sounds like the Ford. So to me this felt more luxurious and especially for the price, it made sense.

But what I will miss most in the Ford is the backseat storage space, since the back seat floor is flat and does not have the middle hump like the Tundra has. i was able to lift the backseats up and had a huge flat surface to work with. Not sure why Toyota incorporated that type of design instead of keeping floor flat. With Tundra's storage area, there really isn't much flor space in the back.

What I like the most with the Tundra is the back rear window rolls down completely instead of the Ford's small square window that you can't event fit a basketball through.

In both my trucks I had the panoramic sun roof and I felt the Tundra handled a car wash's dryer better having less noise when the air hit the outside panels of the sunroof. I sometimes felt water droplets coming through, when my Ford was going through the high pressure dryer/blower.

So having owned both with similar trims, if you want something more "luxurious" and most likely more reliable, go with Tundra. Also, as of today the 2022 Ford Lariat went from 55k to 75k, with the only noticeable change being a bigger display for the new Fords. So i think the Ford is now overpriced as well.
