I'm sure that will change real quick. Especially with how many mainstream manufacturers are already preselling and estimated to produce.

My statements don’t apply to all owners again…

In the reverse it would ignorant to call all 5.7 V8 owners environmental haters.

    Case in point…yourself
You sound like a car/truck person…I apologize if my assumptions are incorrect. It’s sounds as if you are purchasing the Lighting for performance and because it suits your daily needs. And he’ll it does sound like a blast to drive. I respect that and don’t view that as hypocritical.

However if you stated I am buying this truck SOLELY for SAVING the environment…yeah not so much. It sounds like you have a realistic sense of what that EV will provide. I live in the northeast and whenever I voiced the environmental cons of EV I automatically want planet earth to die…and that is when I walk away.

Unfortunately EV discussions, let alone debates, have become highly political taking away from serious solutions and development discussions…

Depending where you live cost of electricity for ev vehicles can by high. In California electricity is high. I pay 3/4 less for electricity cost in Nevada. So for the Ford lighting in California for a full charge for 300 mile could cost you $40, in Nevada that would be about $30.

Ownership def varies by regions. I pay $0.11-$0.12 per kWh. Even if our local doubled the rates I'm still able to justify the purchase.

What I'm doing is exploring options that can match or exceed the '19 Sequoia's capability. Only considering it because I'm an MPG nerd so always interested in better.

I will say after 5k miles in the powertrain needs some work. In eco mode it's okay and works fine but in normal and sport it's not that smooth. Mine is smoother than some of the issues people post in the forums but not as smooth as what it should be and other trucks.

If I wasn't selling the F150 tomorrow I'd take it in for a reflash.

I posted the following back in December and thought I'd give the board an update. I was maybe around 3k miles on my 21 F150 Platinum Powerboost at that time and I'm at 8k miles or so now, so here are some updates:

    1. On my first oil change at 7500 miles, I had a list of 10 items for them to look at. None of them were "critical", but a lot of little annoyances.
    2. I agree that the transmission and engine can be clunky.
    3. Mileage (mixed, but mostly in town under 50 mph) has been in the 21-23 mpg range when driven calmly. In heavy traffic and under 45 mph, I can get it in the high 20's and low 30's with the right driving style.
    4. I love the truck, the tech features, the premium interior look/feel.
    5. Ford still hasn't turned on blue cruise/360 so the "self driving" stuff is still a pipe dream.

I like this truck a lot, it's fun and gets lots of compliments as well as being comfortable and quiet around town, BUT....there is no way I would own this long-term or out of warranty vs. a Tundra or Sequoia Capstone. I like the F150 and respect it but it makes me nervous in terms of unwanted surprises that I suspect I will have as it ages. I'm simply not as confident in this truck as I would be in a Toyota/Lexus product.

I'm hopeful the Capstone Tundra and Sequoia get released soon as I would gladly trade the 150 on one of them assuming the value of my 150 holds up vs. what I paid.

    Original December 2021 Post

I just bought a 2021 F150 Platinum Hybrid as I got a great private party deal and it will hold me over until the Tundra Capstone Hybrid is available. Some thoughts based on the following trucks I've owned:

    2008 Tacoma TRD Off Road
    2015 4runner Ltd.
    2016 GMC Sierra SLT
    2021 Ford F150 Platinum Hybrid

The Tacoma and the 4runner were absolutely bulletproof and had zero issues. They always felt a little dated and a little plasticy in the interior features and technology, but rock solid reliability and unreal resale value. Essentially drove them each for years with almost zero depreciation after buying each one a few years old from a private party.

The GMC was really nice but by 15,000 miles was starting to rattle and just not feel well put together which gave me real concerns about build quality. Really comfortable, great V8 power, etc. but I didn't trust it at all long-term and sold it.

I wasn't planning on buying the F150 as I was just going to keep my 4runner until the Capstone hits the market, but I came across a private party super low mileage F150 hybrid and decided to pull the trigger and then use it to trade on the Tundra and offset sales tax, etc. The F150 is getting fantastic gas mileage 22-25 mpg in the city and is powerful, luxurious and full of really awesome technology. It's certainly a better truck the the Sierra I had in every possible way. This said, with only 3800 miles on it so far, there are some little things that would make me very hesitant to own it out of warranty. The transmission seems to hunt at times, the switching between electric, hybrid and full power seems to hesitate and there is a rattle in the rear sliding window. Are they deal breakers? No. But if the Capstone delivers on the rumors of Lexus level interior and tech with Tundra level reliability, resale, and utility, there is no way I'm not trading the F150 in a heartbeat. Frankly, as long as the Capstone or even Platinum Hybrid is close enough, the F150 is gone. Great truck, but ultimately, not a Tundra.

Having owned a lot of Toyota and Lexus vehicles over the years in my home and relative's homes, I simply haven't found any manufacturer that does a better all around job.

On Autotrader I'm seeing most 2021 Powerboosts are traded in at under 10k miles. I don't know what the stories are but that's worrying. I think I got too giddy about the onboard wattage, I'm geeky about that and MPG's. I believe I can trust this Sequoia to 300k miles so kinda goofy to try to fix something that isn't broke.
I like to buy used, but I've learned over the years you need to do a lot of research and crawl under the truck to inspect everything. Never buy one that has been warmed up, always start them cold and go through the gears and 4WD system cold. Always helps to have a buddy along to monitor sounds while you do the startup procedure.
McDonald fish sandwich is mm-mm-mm. A good reason to buy leather or vinyl seats because the tartar sauce does tend to squeeze out.

    My neighbor’s job pays his
Car payment so he has a brand new Lincoln MKC in his driveway every 2 years. I had one friend that went through over a dozen cars in a couple years. Something new kept catching his eye so he’d just pull the trigger as long as they kept his payment the same. I’ve known a few people that would upgrade once per year. One liked the H2 and was getting one in a new color each year for awhile. Another would keep swapping Lincoln Towncars.

My brother in law would buy nice used cars and hold them a year or two before getting excited about something else til my sister told him to cool it, put leather in his silverado and drive it to death.

Adding an inverter isn't that hard. Especially in the 3rd gen with the batteries under the rear seats. I have a 3KW inverter on my 2.5gen.

Aftermarket will prob have a lithium battery swap soon that takes up half the space too.

Millions of people listen to pop music too. Doesn't make it good.

Please explain how you got a 3kW inverter in and how it actuallly works. Stock battery and 130A alternator can't handle that.

Added a Lithium ion battery it hooks up to. Lead Acid batteries can only be discharged to about 50% of their rated capacity. Charges back up to full within a couple hours of driving from empty. I don't always pull the full 3KW either which the alternator can keep up with ~1400W continuous loads.

For the 3rd gen's 280V built in inverter lines, it would be even easier to add a >7.2KW inverter system.

None. I really like it but I hit carvana at the right time and will come ahead a few thousand (after tax on new and new tonneau cover for Lightning). Already getting 36-38 mpg on they hybrid and it's a really smooth ride.

In Canada, GM is offering a credit for the lack of heating steering wheel, no heated/ vented seats, and no parking assist. It’s only like $50 for each, but it’s something. When chips come in, can bring it back for free retrofit.

I know, I know, no way indicative of what the tank will be. But just getting started On the first mpg calculation.

I wanted to burn more of the tank the dealer put in first and probably could have gone another week on it putting me
At close to the one month mark. But my 6 year old for whatever reason watches gauges from the backseat now and gets nervous about running dry and being stranded. I tried to explain this tank is bigger than the Tundra’s so being down to 1/4 tank on this is not the same thing. But it was no go. With the gauge showing about 1/4 tank left after mostly city driving showing 350-ish miles and the computer saying about 100 to go to empty I got 20 and change gallons into the 30 gallon tank and reset everything. No road trips planned until April so probably won’t get close to the nearly 600 mile -plus range some have claimed.

But I will keep it under 75 for shorter highway hops with minimal hard throttle and try to maximize electric motor participation in town. Going by how long last tank went I may not have results for close to a month. I run through most of a tank on the rare occasions when I do this.

Threw 91 octane in although supposed to he fine on 87. I think there is a slight de-tuning with 87 in the tank, may need 91 to get full power ratings. Will run in normal mode this time. Can feel a definite power reduction in eco mode so may try that for comparison on the next tank.

Trip computer automatically resets for mpg avg on a fresh trip when you turn it on, and has been as high as 20.

4x4 3.5 xlt Crew, 3.73, 20 inch wheel package, panoramic moonroof. GVWR and payload math indicate curb weight around 5880 lbs. Not my commute vehicle. Typical driving is short hop stop and go during the week and short highway bursts on the weekends. Only add ons so far are ventshades, bug deflector and folding hard bed cover.

What's the pic of your gauge cluster showing 31.4mpg over 1.3 miles traveled supposed to represent?

Nothing as I said except my starting point getting a good chunk of all electric driving in for the first mile or so from The gas station to home. I plan to compare hand calculations to the computer after burning most of the tank.

Gotcha. There's no way that the upcoming Tundra hybrid will be able to compete with the Powerboost in MPGs. If Toyota were to make a Tundra Prime, that would likely give the Powerboost serious competition

agreed, but it would be nice if toyota got the hybrid thing down to the point where it was really smooth, the ford isn't.

So far while driving at speed the drivetrain feels good to me. The times when the transition is irritatingly obvious is when sitting still or moving slowly. Just something I’ll need to get used to. Truck bumped noticeably to turn on while the salesman was going over features and he had to explain what happened when he saw my “WTF” look. Then last night for whatever reason it did it backing into my driveway and I thought I tapped the wife’s car or roller over something.

At traffic speed its pretty seamless to me though. It would be nice if they find an update to make it behave like that while parked or at parking lot speeds.

thats what I experienced during my test of the powerboost, once your rolling at higher speeds its fine.

but at a stop or start and stop or slow roll situation, its pretty clunky, to the point where I moved it down on my list because of it.

Yeah the normal driving it’s fine but for me on hills it was bad. Down shifting on a hill was rough and slow speed uphill shifting was bad. Also if I let off throttle at a specific time between shifts it would either clunk or really hold out the gear .

only other issue I had was the reverse sensing and braking. 50% of the time it worked, 30% of the time it didn’t. And 20% of the time it would say “reverse assist unavailable “ but still work.

    Re: F150 Powerboost comments above

So based on what you guys are saying. If you take the F150 Powerboost on a logging road for a few miles where you go slow, and slower, and there are quite a few steep drops (braking), 45 degree hills from 5mph (throttle), and add in a few 90 degrees tight turns while doing this. It sounds to me that this type of terrain would make the Powerboost a not so nice pleasant experience, to the point of making it unacceptable ? Pic from Feb.

If you have stop n go on an incline it will be rough. To be fair my 21 TRD pro had some rough clunks on the same incline I travel here. My 19 Traverse did too.
