Why do you have to refuel when you piss?

If a vehicle has greater range, you don't have to refuel when you stop to piss. Heck, you won't always have to stop at a gas station when you need to piss too.

This forum rocks. We are actually having a semi-serious conversation about potty breaks. Love it.
I could see a small tank and low mpg (like <10 while towing) would be a problem.
My 22 gallon tank towing a travel trailer at 13 mpg gets me close to 300 miles/65mph=4.5 hours. I’ll gladly stop and stretch.

    It's useful when towing.

When we travel to Watkins Glen International or Virginia International Raceway, the routes with more consistent travel time and less commuting traffic are around 275-300 miles but they'll usually have smaller gas stations where pulling a trailer through could be inconvenient. If you get 650-700 miles unloaded, you'll probably get 400-450 miles while towing with the F150 and its 36 gallon fuel tank. That means I could make that entire trip without needing to pull through small gas stations, arrive at the track, unload the track car, unhitch the trailer, and head to the hotel before needing to refuel.

I'd also like to make it out to Mid Ohio which is about 390 miles, and it would be nice to not have to stop in PA to refuel since it's more expensive there.

Hey if it works for you, then that’s all that matters, glad your happy

32 and the tundra works just fine for me, so we’re both good, ive never wanted more, that said I get more range with this than I did with the 5.7 and the 38, but I had a pig version . It didn’t matter much I’m not much of a huge mpg guy but I’ll take it if it’s there

It only matters to me when it comes to towing. 36 gallons lets me make the 200+ trip to the coast without stopping.

Having an infant in my 09 Cremax on a roadtrip who screams themselves to sleep and wakes back up when you stop and open doors also was a reason to wish for more range.

You all kill me talking about range on any of these vehicles. MPGs should be the least of your concern when purchasing a GX or a Suburban. The wife's CRV Hybrid gets 40 mpgs on a 490 ish mile range. It is a smaller SUV so if that is a concern get a smaller SUV. I even think the new NX350 Hybrid gets into the 30s mpgs with 350 plus HP. The technology will eventually catch up but Toyota is leading the way with the Hybrid tech. Honda is okay for certain models but needs to retire the 3.5 liter v6 for something else.

Some of us have kids and can’t jam everyone in a CRV. Why is MPG the least of your concern? Range is a big deal. For instance, I love our Sequoia, but it has a 26gal gas tank and poor MPG and there have been a couple trips in south TX where we couldn’t find a gas station that was open and were really sweating it.

Unless you have more than 4 kids you could do fine in a CRV. It has about as much room as our old Explorer. Granted the 200 Hybrid HP isn't that fun, but it does really well for a smaller SUV. The 4 door Bronco and Toyo Land Cruiser also do okay on gas in 4 cylinder form. The larger SUVs and Trucks just are not going to return the mileage of a smaller Hybrid or 4 cylinder power train.

You can definitely tell who tows and who doesn't when it comes to this range debate.

Strap a travel trailer behind you, resulting in around 9-10 MPG average, and see how much you like a 22 gal tank.......

We went from a Titan XD with a 26 gal tank to a F-350 with a 34 gal tank and it made a big difference in our trips.

We travel a lot with a friend who tows the exact same trailer with a '19 Tundra with the 38 gal tank and used to catch sh*t from him every time we had to stop to refuel with the Titan.

A 22 gal fuel tank in a truck used to do truck stuff is a non-starter for me.

I'm hoping to be able to replace our factory tank with a 58-gal Transfer Flow tank eventually......there's just $2,648.77 standing in my way at the moment.

A week’s vacation FILLs our Sequoia to the brim with a family of 5. Comical that you think a CRV can do the same compared to a full size SUV.

Those other vehicles you mentioned might be OK during the week, but suck on trips. Bronco, LC, 4-Runner and GX are way too small for us.

MPGs by itself are not that important to me, but in the context of range, if the MPGs are lower, then you need a bigger gas tank to provide the needed range.

+1. For a week long road trip to include triathlons or tracking our track car, you definitely need space. A BMW X7 is about the smallest SUV we would consider for two of us, but a Suburban is preferable if you have 1-2 more passengers.

I can't believe people actually try to argue against fuel range. Rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

I'm responding to your notion that it doesn't matter on a full size vehicle. MPG and range matter.

is there someone arguing against it?

for me, I was simply saying 32 gallons with much better MPG works just fine compared to 38 gallons with shit MPG, and the biggest overriding factor, my aging badder , HA.

but ya the 22 doesnt work for shit and has no business being in a truck, but I always buy top trims so I never had a small tank on the gen 2 until you get back to my 2010 DC limited , but I didnt tow much back then

It really comes in handy with hurricanes. Gas stations run out days prior, and having a larger tank has been beneficial on multiple occasions.

I recently towed around a 7,000 pound boat in 105 degree heat up the grapevine and through Bakersfield. Not once did my temperatures (engine and transmission) climb or worry me. This current gen’s Tundra’s cooling systems are superior to the F-150.

I'm not going to engage in this threads typical pissing matches with calling names out. There are clearly some people acting like a bigger fuel tank or better fuel economy isn't always beneficial, which takes some mental gymnastics. I live out west where everything isn't 5 minutes away, so having 700 mile DTE in a snow storm that closes roads, or back country hunting is something I would always be in favor of and something I can't possibly see the logic for not being in favor of. Everyone's perspective and circumstances are different, but even the "bladder" argument doesn't hold water. It's nice being able to stop to use the restroom and not have to fill up if one station has questionable fuel or non-favorable prices.

my F150 stays right in the middle too when I’m towing my boat in the same type heat, it’s incredible how efficiently these modern systems shed heat

The whole front of our 3rd gen Tundra is a wind tunnel. It takes in air like a big mouth bass and tends to run cooler than most. The only aggravating situation for me is if you don't start the truck on the Hybrid. Seems I miss start every other time or it takes it longer than I think it should to start. It is like a delayed start sequence on the Hybrid, and I am not patient at all.

I had one of the 3.0 liter Powerstroke F150s and it had a 780 mile range talk about range but it is diesel. There is trade offs from switching tech.

Yeah, haven't had a problem towing a car trailer on 6% grades in western Maryland either.

Also, J2807 does have tests that stress the powertrain cooling:
    https://www.motortrend.com/how-to/1502-sae-j2807-tow-tests-the-standard
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAE_J2807

Unless someone is an insider at one of these OEMs, they won't know for sure what test the vehicle would have been closest to failing for the J2807 spec.

At the end of the day, I doubt many non-HD pickups can truly compete with the cooling stack of a HD pickup that is designed to have a good portion of its cooling stack obstructed by a snow plow while operating at low speeds without much natural airflow through the heat exchangers.
