My 3rd gen owning coworker and I have had a friendly rivalry since we each got our trucks. But now he is do down about "driving a beater that even the dealership won't take back" that I feel bad about all the trash I've talked to him.

If his truck isn't broken, why would the dealership need to take it back?

If it breaks, at least you guys in the US have the lemon law.

I think it’s just that he bought the truck with a high expectation of reliability and is now disappointed

Until it breaks, it's still reliable.

A friend had an older one - if I remember correctly, his only issue was a leaking transfer case that he didn't catch quickly causing him to have to replace it. It did have a weird rear axle ratio - 2.92, I think.

The transmission ratios were really weird I think. Kinda like how the 2nd gen Tundra ratios were weird and so the 4.30 gears were not actually that impressive because they were just making up for the transmission.

I think car care nut says the Titan is solid. Like close behind the v8 tundra. Titans are a good truck. That $48k is well equipped too. Those seats are prob the most comfortable outside of raptor recaros. The onju real negative is the tech and interior is dated. Although I like the tree gear selector, frees up more console space

It is very very very tempting but my 2018 only has less than 40,000 miles on it and sits during the week as I have a company provided truck. Going into higher debt for it even at 0% interest is the hold back now.

This quote is from post #4 of this thread back in Dec. of 2021. Interesting thoughts in hindsight.
I enjoyed my Tundra for exactly two years. I had fun dressing it up with the small lift, rims, bigger tires, and chrome delete. I was in a little denial and told myself "the wind noise isn't that bad, the clunk from reverse to drive isn't that bad, the brake squeal isn't that bad, the dead throttle pedal isn't that bad." After driving my new GMC I am not telling myself these things, or anything "isn't that bad". I think Toyota could have done better. I hope they do better. I paid $54,000 for the Tundra brand new and got $45,500 on trade after two years. I don't think I did too badly. I'll maybe someday be back in a Tundra if it doesn't include "it isn't that bad" thoughts. Peace.

Funny to find a “Still Towing thread” giving praise to the Tundra. Never seen a “still towing” thread in a Ford/ GMC thread.

But these guys still give praise to the all mighty gen.3. Even the 2.5 gen guys stopped commenting. These third gen.3 are a lost cause. Deny… deny…. Deny.

Yikes. $10k loss plus all the mods, probably what, $14k loss all in for a two year old truck? I guess that’s not too much worse than if you had leased it for two years at $500/month.

And just a month ago, you loved it?
Anyway, sorry to hear of the bath you took on that thing. Hope you enjoy the new ride.

The mods were cheap. I bought the rims for about $800 and sold the stock for $500. The lift was cheap done by a local shop. I picked up the tires on sale for about $1200 and sold the stockers for $800. I'd say about $1500 into mods when done. We all know that buying a new vehicle is not a wise investment unless it is a collector. Drive it off the lot and it loses thousands. So yes, that truck cost me money to drive for two years.
The only time I have made money on a vehicle was Covid times. Bought a '18 Silverado (MSRP $49500) for $34500 and traded it in on the Tundra 3 years later for $38,500.
Yes, I did enjoy the truck. Daily. I am not saying I didn't. Now just seemed like a good time to get out of it...

I took a similar loss when I traded my 2022 Tundra for a 2024 F150. But, the F150 was discounted approx. $9,000 off of MSRP. Both the trade and the discounted F150 were what I considered the current market values. Transacting at market value (after quite a bit of negotiating) is what my goal was.

    I was facing two realities:
1-I could not feel comfortable traveling, towing a trailer with the Tundra.

2-The Tundra was probably going to continue dropping in value and / or it would become more difficult to trade the Tundra as the engine recall became better known and / or the recall was expanded.

Therefore, if U need to trade it and are able to at market and can afford it, I do not consider that taking a bath. It is facing reality.

Agreed. A couple of other dealers I worked with were at $38,000 and $42,000 on trade. The Toyota dealer wouldn’t touch the $45,500 I got. Not a bath in my opinion.

    Its $48K and / or 0% financing for 60 months ?
That Nissan Titan ad reminds me of the Dealer Sales ad when I bought my Tundra.
$500 above dealer cost. Canadian prices.

Panic selling a truck at a $9-10k loss at the absolute worst time to sell the truck —regardless of the discount you got on your new vehicle—is the definition of taking a bath.

You speculated that yours would be one of the <1% and call that “facing reality”.

You do you and all, but that just seems crazy to me. I’d say the same if you sold a Ford at a massive loss, too.

Yeah that guy. Ok.... he is really drawn out and kinda boring.
And sometime he alludes to an interesting fact.
At least his arms aren’t flying around when he talks like the other Youtube guy.

Haha, fair. I sold a 4Runner, Tacoma, and three boats in that time and made money on all of them.

You don't say! What's fascinating to me about this is, even if you exclude the current recall and obviously don't count the previous few years, people trade trucks at massive losses all the time, and for a large % of the truck-buying market, this is just normal.

Any investment where you cash out at a 10-20% loss (this is called realizing the loss) is not something anyone should high-five others over.

I think a significant number of people subconsciously rely too heavily on their vehicles to give them a dopamine hit every time they get behind the wheel. This slowly wears off over time (we call it getting "bored"), so any excuse to trade into something new floods ours dopamine receptors. Excitement is built, which snowballs and gives us even more dopamine hits as we spend even more $$$ on tint, ceramic, wheels, lift, and tires. Then, once we have the perfect coating finish and stance, we post pics from the best angle on forums and social media, and each comment/like gives us even more dopamine hits.

We're all just dopamine junkies at this point. :notsure:

Absolutely, as a comparison. If you only get two years worth of use after spending $60k plus ceramic/tint/lift/tires/wheels at the real cost once it’s all said and done after all the fees none of us ever like to talk about amounting to a $15k+ loss, this is not good or praiseworthy.

Just because vehicles rarely appreciate doesn’t mean we should high-five each other for making the absolute worst of a depreciating situation.

Having my vehicles start every time regardless of where I am and being able to take them wherever I want instead of back to the dealer is exciting enough for me.

Not looking for high fives. Just conversing online about trucks, the market, etc. Not looking for praise or the opposite. Absolute worse...hmmm.

Everybody has their risk calculations. My Powerboost did some things to make me nervous but I have obligations in the next couple years that make trading a less than 2-3 year old truck a non starter for me. Needs to be paid off in 4 years and held for 3-4 years after that. I got the extended warranty with rental coverage and am doing really early critical fluid changes early.

Everybody handles their business early. What's happening with these motors is a bit of a disappointment to people who are invested. It could change my mind if I was shopping but if my truck was behaving itself it would probably not make me scared enough to trade, as much as I Like to bust balls a little bit.

You could very possibly find out you took a hit to get out of a truck that might have turned out to be a 100k trouble free vehicle and into one that's not over a hypothetical. That would be my thought if I was in a problem free Gen3 right now. I'd feel stupid to go to a Ford, Chevy or GM then end up with extended payments and issues I didn't have with my Tundra.

And My wife would be lookin at me going "good job genius you dumped your Toyota for reliability worries and now your year old replacement has been in the shop 3 weeks"

We must have different definitions of the word. A vehicle is a depreciating asset and a liability. In no way would I ever consider them an "investment".
