I really don’t think carbon build up was an issue. I scoped my intake valves at 100k miles and they were pretty spotless.

and the official reason for port injection was to decrease the drag of the high pressure fuel pump while the engine is at low load. If you are not shoving a bunch of boost into the engine you don’t need direct injection.

I think we can all agree, a Toyota with a spun bearing and half assed remedy (read anything other than new short block replacement) is still better than a F-150. I mean Toyota is going to fix it so well.

    Since my May 5th pos
It turned out to be a wiring harness above the fuel tank that was apparently worn through.?. The stealership actually started giving me good attention when the truck was brought in on a flatbed the first time... In the days following I had numerous occasions of nearly all sensor warning flashing across the dash, stop vehicle now warnings. One episode of non starting, then restarting after multiple tries. Then another episode of no start before work leading to another flatbed ride. I think the vehicle has been through four 12V batteries and a rediculous number of trips to the shop. It was working great for the last week, great enough to make it in to trade it in ... for a Gen 2.5 DC with low miles.....

The thing with F150s is, you just know you’re going to have some problem pop up by 80-100k miles, if your ownership even lasts that long. Ford doesn’t spend billions more in warranty work than any other manufacturer because their shit actually holds up over the warranty term, obviously. Just typical Ford things.

A rash of spun main bearings unknown in scope or breadth on the other hand is a very untypical Toyota thing. Toyota’s sweeping recalls often end up only affecting a very small % of trucks. They literally put a stop sale on ‘21s when only 151 trucks had the problem they issued the stop sale for (one of the machines that makes the steering rack made parts out of tolerance for a few days).

It could be that only a very small % of trucks eats their main bearing. Or it could be 10s of thousands. Absolutely sucks for everyone dealing with it, and I would guess that a lot of these ‘22+ owners are first timers with Toyota. Probably makes them last timers, too.

If you want good resale, historically Tacoma is the way to go. Used prices have always been insane. The resale on my 2012 Tundra was decent, but my Tacomas have always sold for close to what I paid new (or even more).

Not sure the new Tacoma will have the same type of resale, time will tell.

I do think the Tundra will have a hit on resale from this, at least in the short term, especially if the recall expanda to cover them all.

Nothing is typical for anew production model, you can't keep taking this Toyota durability/reliability to the bank on older, simpler vehicles. It's a new model that's completely UNproven so far. They're all proving to be problematic regardless of OEM. If someone only cares about reliability/durability by a 2021 Tundra, Tacoma, or 4 Runner.

Sorry for your luck as the truck was only a few years old. My past 2018 went south @ 30k traded at 38k. Wiring issues are the worst but now you can move on.

You’re not wrong there. I bought my Tacoma new in 2015 for $28,000, sold it over seven years later with 120,000 miles on it for 30,000. Covid was weird man.

Wish it hadn’t gotten too small.

Agreed. Or Sequoia or 200 series.
Tundra best full size resale value in 2023: https://www.kbb.com/awards/best-resale-value-cars-trucks-suvs/#truck (it was higher than the Tacoma here.)

Tundra best full size resale value in 2021: https://www.kbb.com/awards/best-resale-value-full-size-pickup-truck/
—best resale value while offering a 15 year old drivetrain.
Toyota has a long way to go before they come close to matching Ford on warranty expenditures. I’m not in the market for a very long time, but if I ever buy another 1500, more things would have to change with both manufacturers before I would consider an F150 over a Tundra.

Even pre-covid my Tacoma resale was insane. My last Tacoma was a 2007 I paid $26k new for and sold it for $24k 7 years later. I really disliked the last gen, and wish I'd bought a 2015 new.

My best "deal" was my 16 Land Cruiser. Paid $53k for it with 30k miles in 2018 from a former NBA player.

If long term reliability is a factor for someone, it makes no sense to throw out decades of Toyota’s best-in-class reliability in every single class they offer a vehicle in over one issue. These issues do not occur every time Toyota offers a new model; in fact, they almost never occur. This issue is VERY atypical for Toyota.

If it continues with sweeping recalls across multiple platforms for years, then yeah maybe we can conclude they’re on the same level as everyone else. But overwhelmingly, they’ve put out new model after new model of all kinds of vehicles with fewer issues and fewer vehicles affected by recalls. The last model of Tundra had 20 engines that broke camshafts, and a handful that broke a valve spring. Neither issue was nearly as widespread as this and neither triggered a recall.

Everyone else’s drivetrain issues occur more frequently even when you account for the fact that they make more vehicles. They have issues at a higher rate.

Funny you mention that. My '93 full-size Bronco first blew its E4OD auto trans at 89K miles. It blew again at over 120K miles. The electronic transfer case was also toast by 80K miles. I replaced it with a junkyard manual t-case, but had to jerry-rigger the manual shifters to get it to work. But yeah, the problems started right around that mileage you gave.

Someone I know is looking to buy an F150 - some towing less than 6000 lbs, 20 foot bowrider, but mostly hauling.
He really likes the flat floor back seat design for hauling large tall items and keeping them out of the weather.
Which engine would you choose for long term ownership and why ?
Wants this to be his last truck.
Mileage a concern only in the mind. He doesn't put on more than 10000 kms a year.
Realize the last engine shown is for the Raptor.
Said I would ask for him.
Frankly, I am surprised at the number of engine choices / variations.

Personally I’d pick the 2.7 or the 3.5 over the 5.0 but any of them will tow that amount of weight with ease. I’m partial to the 3.5 of course, Ford has got the bugs worked out at this point.
