I also run premium almost exclusively. I get a couple MPG better with it too, not enough to justify increased cost, but still.

My local Ford dealer looks like a billionaires supercar/supertruck collection. Raptor R's, Raptors, Shelby Raptor, Bronco Raptors, GT500's, Ford GT's, etc everywhere.

Good representation of the PowerBoost with summer blend fuel here. The switchover in fuel seemed to happen roughly when I changed my oil last and Trip 2 was reset then.

The mpg calculation is sometimes a little low, sometimes a little high, sometimes dead-on when I've checked before. Overall, probably slightly optimistic versus hand calculations, but not wildly off. I'll probably fill the tank tomorrow and will see how it compares against my Trip 1.

I do have an ideal commute for fuel economy - lots of back roads, not much stop and go, typically not over 55 MPH.

But I thought it wasn’t possible to tune a hybrid system to be both an efficient and provide performance?

    Holy poop, 98000 trucks?

What I don't understand is how the Japanese motors seem to be having the same issue though. How would they mess up the same thing at both plants?

Also, havent we seen 2023 and 2024s with failed bearings now?

I wonder if they still don't really know what's going on with these trucks but they felt it was time for a recall so they aren't perceived as blowing this off. Buy time and goodwill will while they continue to investigate.

And if you do a recall you need to assign a cause to the problem because you can't say "there's a problem but we still have no effin clue what it is."

I think they know but don't have a solution. Can't replace the engines on 100,000 trucks. But the fact that they issued a STOP SALE and have filed it as a Safety Recall with NHTSA means they are taking it seriously.

Wow! This discussion did not age well for Toyota.

I never thought the Chevy 4 banger 2.7L turbo in my company provided Silverado would be more reliable than a Toyota V-6 TT. This is only used as a commuter vehicle but only gets 87 octane gas per fleet policy and has been running well through 51,000 miles in hot humid FL in heavy traffic.

The STOP SALE on 80 trucks I don't believe is a big $ hit for Toyota but maybe for the dealerships who own them. Imagine if they had done that in the midst of MY23 production instead.

Yeah, the 80 listed in the bulletin are likely left over new 23s. But I believe with the stop sale like this it would also apply to any trade-ins on dealers lot as well.

Gearheads, school me. Possibly a dumb question but Most of the trucks that fail get a few thousand miles in before failing if not several thousand. Is it plausible for a large sampling of the trucks with a debris issue to run fine for so long before catastrophically failing due to this? Would we not get symptoms sooner after the first time firing it up?

can an engine with enough debris to abruptly grind it to a halt at some point run great for 10,20, 30k before abruptly becoming a paperweight?

    speculation of course

Varying amounts of debris and varying amounts of oil starving

Then so much for "stop over hyping, this is probably only .00002% of trucks." Sounds like if this is the true cause most trucks in this time frame could be ticking time bombs that may or may not go off in the first couple years.

I have to admit I still have more faith in Toyota's process in a scenario like this though than in how Ford would handle it.

I mean I get more nervous about this now if I am in a Tundra from that time frame because up to now it sounded like these are abrupt low mileage failures of a specific component and if you made it to some bench mark without it happening you're likely fine.

you don’t have to worry about it, so just rock on

I’m not really worried about it either , shit happens, when or if it does, then I’ll deal with it, no reason to worry about shit that hasn’t happened yet.

Right, but with failures happening out of warranty and happening at higher and higher mileage it sure looks like we haven't seen how long it may take for a failure to occur. Ideally (ideally you have a reliable engine) your motor fails early, having one shit the bed at 100k or more could really suck if it's out of warranty. Especially if toyota keeps playing pretend that only the date range is affected. This party is just getting started.

All fun and games until the family hauler you take to your vacation rental with a full bed, loaded bike rack and half loaded back seat goes down for an undetermined time frame just before summer vacation and you are handed the keys to an Escape with no hitch or roof rack.

Just The vehicle breaking down bothers me less than the vehicle breaking down when I need its capabilities the most forcing me to alter important plans.

ESPs are a must now. The days of 200k on just oil changes as a rule seem to be over. Ford started doing TTV6s in 2010 and only engineered out the last of the most common failure points in the last 3-4 yrs.

Unless you are towing a boat or trailer or going camping deep in the woods with the family, why worry?

Apparently most new Tundra owners commute from the garage to Starbucks don’t break a sweat about it.

so how is worrying about that going to change that?

should I run out and buy a ford now and hope that doesn’t shit out like it already did on the test drive ?

or just keep driving the solid truck I have now?

not being a smart ass , but all the non owners , and “others” , it’s like you want us owners to panic or something

there isn’t a fuckin thing we can do but just keep driving , why worry about it?

I'm saying I personally would be nervous. As my software experience with my Ford made me nervous. I am not stoking fear and paranoia so much as saying it sucks that the days are over in a lot if segments where you could generally just do oil changes and tire rotations for 10 years before having to worry.

It makes me understand the viewpoint of the people who snagged 2020s and 2021s even if I couldn't bring myself to do it because I wanted new tech

I mean even if you aren't deep in the woods, if you're on a major highway like around Chicago where the traffic flow is stupid fast and even semis are rolling like a freight train and you're engine grenades and you need to traverse 5 lanes of traffic to make it to the side while everyone and there grandma posts tik toks an checks facebook while doing their make up on the highway. Yea, not good. Someone could get killed.
