I understood it; possible my reaction was knee-jerk to a point. I just see a lot of 'black and white' posts all around, and context often lends quite a bit.

Such as with my case. I *NEEDED* a reliable truck more than I needed to save $3K or so. It's possible that a few years old truck would have done just as well, but given that both new and used trucks in the past have bit me....and given the cost of a new truck was maybe $3K more, it made sense to spring for a new Toyota.

Of course, I also did not want or need to pay more than $40K; and because I was smart with my money (which speaks to your point), even though I took out a loan, I paid it off far quicker than most do.

    1) If you are a business owner, or you use your work vehicle to earn income as an independent consultant - yes you can write off.

    2) if you are employed but your job requires you to maintain your own vehicle to travel for business. You have two choices a) collect mileage through employer or b) your employer signs the government form for you to submit with your taxes that states your vehicle is used for business. At this time you discuss the percentage of vehicle use for work with your accountant. Business vs Personal and write off that amount of the payment.

    3) if you have high cash coming in every month, don't care about the money, and want to be into new vehicles frequently. Just handing the vehicle in has high value to some people. No worries trying to sell or whats it worth. They dont care with this option. I know people in this category too. They don't care until the money stops coming in. I am surprised how many people I know through others, in this category. The Pandemic changed the way people think.

If the last page or two hasn't already proved it, we've beaten the discussions/comparisons of Tundras and F150s into the ground. Carry on, and lets throw some stock picks into this thread too!

My self discipline is contributing enough to my mutual funds that I'm not sitting on more cash than I need to be.

Not a bad way to be.

I'll add this, and it's going to come across wrong but I can't help it. MOST people should not be buying $50-80k trucks period.

I'm a little funny about vehicle cost. I don't cut corners on any feature I want which drives up the cost, but even with an MSRP well into "no compromises" territory, I'm still pinching pennies trying to find vehicles without stuff that I don't care about.

For example, this truck was pretty close to perfect because it's a Lariat 502a with tow, 360 degree cameras, and that's about it. Sticker was around $5k lower than a lot of what I saw on lots because it lacks the power tailgate, moonroof, FX4, and some other bloat.

Definitely not. I refer to it as my one poor financial decision. But, in my defense we're dual income no kids, so what I save there more than pays for a new truck every few years. If I had kids, there's no way I'd have this truck.

Last I checked, I average a little over 3% overall between my 2% Citi Double Cash and all my cards with higher specific categories.

I just do the three fund method. VTSAX, VTIAX, VBTLX
    90% stock - 65% domestic/35% international
    10% bonds

Auto-invest at those ratios with every check and set it and forget it. Though occasionally I'll rebalance it to get it back to those percentages.

    Yes, correct.

    Out of 100 it's:
    58.5% Domestic Stock
    31.5% International Stock
    10% Bonds

Very few people will pick stocks over the course of 20-30 years that will beat the S&P500.

Honestly, service was a big factor in my decision as well. I even had an F-150 on order, but ultimately, the dealerships were further away and years of experience with my local Toyota dealerships made me not really want to have to restart that trust all over again.

The two QC issues I had with my Tundra were resolved without any pushback: loose window trim and the steering wheel leather being kind of loose on the backside of the steering wheel. Honestly, the steering wheel thing wasn't even a big deal but I just figured for how much the truck costs, it should be correct, and the dealership agreed and I got an entirely brand new steering wheel for free. Window trim was also a brand new part. All good since then.

Our kid's outdoor field hockey practice always has 3-5 late model F150s scattered around the lot for his session. One coach owns a nice GMC. His coach drives a Gen 2.5 Tundra TRD Pro. One other assistant has an old Ram.

F150 outnumbers them all and is the clear hands down choice of tired suburban Soccer Dads.

My kid is 2 so his soccer team only has like 6-8 kids, I'm not even the only dad with an F-150 Tremor.

Society has beat down men so much, they can only celebrate their "toxicity" through the vehicle they buy. Thus all the lifts, giant tires, shiny never scratched TRD skid plates to show they might get it dirty on a dirt road some day if they want to. It is the same in the Wrangler and Harley Davidson owner world too.

I think Eurodriver is the only one that uses his truck as a truck.

I probably never would have been a pickup guy. But once upon a time my parents offered to use my college fund to get me a cheap used vehicle for college since I won a scholarship. They came up with the bright idea to put me in a reg cab 4 cyl 95 Ranger. I couldn't go that fast, could't carry a bunch of people, I could afford the gas and they could take it back any time they needed the bed for something.

Haven't been without a truck in the nearly 30 years since. Only car I owned was my Challenger RT for a few years alongside my 09 Crewmax and it barely got driven.

My Mom is not a truck person at all and has gone on and on about how big my last 2 pickups were and I always have to remind her she got me started.

TBF, there is a lot more to "using a truck as a truck" than offroading. And there are a lot better choices for vehicles to offroad than a full size truck.

this^, I like to use my truck for all kinds of stuff, towing, hauling, home improvement, etc.

I just don't off-road more than gravel roads to fish or get to my fishing resort, lol.

That said, even if I did, it certainly would not be in a 70K full-size platinum tundra or any other full-size for that matter, but to each his own

I have a truck because it's hard to put 1500 pounds of playsand/mulch/gravel in an SUV, it's hard to tow 7000# with a minivan. I have AllTerrains to get to my hunting spots and muddy jobsites. I do have 35" tires because of my toxic masculinity as per @cmiles97 apt psychoanalysis.

Love 4Runner but can only afford one vehicle and it's hard to beat an open bed !

Edit: Could save a nice chunk on brand new 2024 4Runner so it's tempting.
