Not a Tundra though, so it's a moot point here. Tundra good, everything else on earth bad.

Same. However, I'm going to have to extend my driveway or something and would probably keep my Tundra. I do not want to daily drive an F-250. What makes the Superduty great for work makes it absolutely suck for daily driving, and I have a 40 mile commute each way to work.

I guess that's why I have a check engine light on my ford and its in the shop vs why my tundra doesn't, HA.

if it were only that simple eh?

As long as my wife's Corolla stays running, I have a daily. Though it wouldn't be that hard to drive a crew cab standard bed HD to where I work, especially since I only have to do that 1-2 days a week at most. I also probably would get similar fuel economy to the Tundra since my commute is all highway.

You mentioned the Ford 3500 Tremor. Did you consider the GM HD ?
I see alot of the GM's around here.

There is a lot more to the HDPP package than springs. Frame, axle, wheels and tires are all different too. They are also not all that rare. I found 10 or so in about 10 minutes the other day when I was looking local for used ones.

I’ve seen Fords with more than that number and GMs right around that mark. Yes, 4x4 crew cabs. They’re not that rare. It’s the only way to actually take advantage (hint hint Toyota) of the tow ratings they give their trucks.

You’d think Toyota would be extra incentivized to give generous payload ratings since they refuse to enter the HD market.

The terms 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, 1 ton…don’t mean anything anymore. The last GM 2500 diesel I saw had 3700 lb of payload on the door jamb. My buddy with the F350 tremor has 4100 lb on his door jamb…so I guess that’s a 2 ton truck? Lol

PS: my old ass 2nd gen can carry 8150 lb if properly distributed without overloading either axle. That would be 2220 lb of payload. :notsure:

The Ford just looks the best in terms of specs. But even my most die-hard Ford buddies admit they have frequent recalls and annoying issues that require trips to the dealer. Their perspective is you gotta pay to play.

My impression is that the GM gasser would be the least hassle of the big 3, even if they consume oil. But I don’t know if the recent lifter issues affect the 6.6 engines…

No lifter problems with the HD’s, no nonsense AFM/DOD. If I was getting an HD I believe GM is heads and tails above Ram and Ford. This is mostly from having all 3 at work and observing in real life. Now we have a Duramax so not the same, but that Chevy single cab long bed pulls 10- 12k all day and runs like a top. The engineering is really good. GM can really do a good job when they want to. Simple trucks with remarkable power plants.

I don’t think @Terndrerrr is suggesting you can get a loaded F150 with 2500 payload, just that the a similarly optioned F150 has more payload than the comparable Tundra. As evidenced by my post earlier comparing my Tremor to the Pro, I’ve got about 275 more pounds of payload.

    Some Sat morning humor.

So the Cybertruck does 2500 lbs. When the guy says you can hear the air bag suspension I was waiting for it ...but it didn't happen.

    https://youtu.be/iEWRxNpsr08

You have discussed going out into the wilderness.
This video shows why I am not a fan of old man balls rear suspensions. See 20 seconds in.
The first habit I have when I am behind a truck is see if its clean underneath.
You can see by the design what purpose the engineers gave it.
I don't like low hanging fruit. Anyway.
Taking one of these HD trucks offroad has its challenges.
Man they seriously struggle with all that weight.

GM HD vs Ford Tremor 3500 - two $100k us dollar trucks - lol $130k cdn.

Best I can do with our car and truck is 7 and 12.5, respectively. I think my parents said they can get 3.8 with their Kona or something like that.

    Yeah 8^0 US spelling.
My career was spent doing IT consulting for an American company based in Rosemont, (Chicago) and Philly. Alot of my written and spoken stuff mostly is ingrained in me now from presenting to them.
    i.e. Project.
    Americans call it Praaaaaaaaaject !
They used to smirk and laugh when I said Prooooo - ject. So I had to give in.

Now for us (Canucks) what was hilarious especially on video calls (zoom) was listening to our American friends pronounce Mississauga, Ontario. Thats where the Company's Canadian HQ recovery site was located.

    They say .....Miss - iss- a - u - ga -

....we told them the u was silent but they just couldn't say it right for some reason.
So we had to mute everytime so they could not hear us smirking.

(American forum this is, sure, but ironically this thread started by a Canadian)

I get it. But rating systems aside, I’ve read multiple people say the HD gassers don’t feel like they have much more power than the 5.7 at all.

The loads that these HD gassers are rated to pull while putting out 450 or 475 ft lbs of max torque just reinforces that it’s not the engine that is the limiting factor.
Yes, the SR and SR5s should have competitive payload ratings, like the XL/XLT and Custom/LT, but they don’t. It is not uncommon to see a crew cab 4x4 XLT with 2k+ even without the HDPP (which is not that rare, honestly). Same story with GM crew cab 4x4 trucks. They can actually handle the tongue weight their max tow ratings would put on the truck.
Yes, 2500lb for the SR/SR5 would actually be competitive. I like your idea of the beefier frame/axle/etc that gives the hybrid the higher GVWR but without the actual hybrid and battery. Would be easy to do. But instead we got a Capstone trim and last place in the segment payload lol

I just haven't seen that many crew cab 4 x4s having 2K+ like you keep saying, besides a random unicorn, where are you seeing this?

I guess it doesnt matter anyways, Im a top trim shopper and none of them have that in that case, and I don't need it anyways

toyota probably watched how Nissan totally dropped the ball with their "heavy half" and said F-that, lets make it ride better, handle better, tow better for the other 95% of the truck buyers in the 1/2 ton segment.

I think you may be in the more rare (nothing wrong with that) area of a person that wants that much more payload without going up to a proper 3/4 or 1 ton. I mean why not get 3-4K payload of those at that point if your towing that heavy, full floater, etc.

just talking anyway, it doesnt matter as we are both happy with what we have, just my .02 that 300-400 lbs more is one thing, but to say 2500 for a 1/2 ton doesnt make sense to me, Im getting a bigger truck at that point.

How many guys on here have gone up to a heavy duty truck because they needed more payload? A dozen? I don't think he's the only one.

That term “1/2 ton” hasn’t mean anything in a very long time. It’s the 1500 segment. Max payload for everyone is over 2k (that’s 1 ton), and Ford’s is up to 3200 lb with the max trailering/heavy duty payload package. Look at the door jamb of most lower trim crew cab 4x4 F150s and GM 1500s.

I know 3 guys with XLT F150s with well over 2k on the door jamb. One guy’s is 2818 (max trailering). And his truck is a 4x4 super crew. That is a truck that is actually capable of towing its max tow rating. What a novel concept…

I get that the average truck buyer wants features and comfort now. The capability that manufacturers advertise is not there for the upper trim levels. For Toyota, it’s not there for the lower trims, either.
More than that. My main hangup is an HD truck would prevent me from getting the places I like to go. There’s a reason there are lots of people on this forum who don’t move up and drive Tundras weighing 9k with armor and dual swing out bumpers. Still the best platform for getting there and coming home every time.

never said he was, just saying if you want 2500lbs of payload may as well get a bigger truck with it, but I guess I’m off with that thought

doesn’t matter anyway, it’s never going to happen , Toyota isn’t going up that high , it is what it is

I can’t put myself in a GM. Our work trucks, HDs included, suffer from electrical gremlins. It’s like GM uses the cheapest POS BCMs and ECUs on the planet.

Powertrain, OK, but if I have to fix all the accessories or electrical crap constantly, I’m out.

I think the pliers thing is a plus. You’re telling buyers you’re (a) resourceful, and (b) not trying to hide a $$$ body shop repair in your asking price. Lets them know you’re a reasonable man.

And the machine gun lets em know no low ballers
