Great point. The more a truck turns into an iPhone, the shorter its service life will be.

Imagine, cars from the 80's and 90's having the relevant computer tech from the era defining the in-car experience.
Honda Accord running Commodore, or a Toyota that had Tandy tech.....

New guy back in , I was thinking of trading up the 2016 tundra on a new tundra but still doing homework , I usually never buy the first year of anything . The F150 is a sold truck , we have them as work vehicles , only down fall on the fords are the bodies are like a beer can , every truck we have look like golf balls with all the dents and dimples .
I was looking at the F250 with the newer Godzilla 7.3 … gas milage is not a issue for me , won’t be a daily driver .
I know the new Tundra says it has a boxed frame , that was one of my problems with one of my Crewmax frame was pretty flexible with a good load .
If I don’t go Tundra I am leaning toward Godzilla !

Unless you drive 500,000 miles a year, why replace your 2016?

My wife has a 2017 Camry with low mileage and I want to replace it simply for an updated infotainment system. Pretty ridiculous for a reason. I feel like 2013 to 2020 ish maybe have been a transition time from where we went from radios to computers/ IPhones for the center console area. Im hopeful that updates to the infotainment system will become standard allowing it to be relatively up to date for the 10 year lifespan of the vehicle? This maybe is already happening to a degree? The one thing im sure of is apple carplay is a game changer ( I’ve had it for a year) and I have no idea why some manufacturers are still not offering it on base models ( Honda CR-V ) and im sure there are a bunch more. I feel like it’s probably not super costly to add but when they force you into the next model up it becomes costly. Seems like buying a car without it now us buying something obsolete ?

Trade values are up , I’m lucky to have a dealer that does not markup the MSRP with some BS fake price adjustment charge , I just bought a new 2022 4runner TRD Pro no markup .
I have been rotating out my older vehicles for new just because used value is crazy right now , I traded a in a truck I paid 66k back in 2019 and got 78k trade value and used the crap out of the truck for 3 yrs and got 12k over what I paid for it .
I traded the truck and got a brand new 4runner and big check back .
I know your paying a bit more for new , If you search around you can find good deals and not scumbag dealers , I’m sure there are post on here about the rip off dealers , I had one dealer on Long Island NY try to tack on 25K to the price of a Pro … If it was not so real its just funny to think a dealer would try and do that .
Used prices are just crazy , your better off trading and buy new has not climbed as much as used , there saying used are up as high as 35% which is crazy .

It's been a good year to drive anything you want. I've exchanged 6 cars this year. Made money on all, although I'm afraid of the F150 trade in this coming Feb/ March.

    6! SIX vehicles in 2021?

This is like day trading stocks in the automotive world. Good on you guys.

I am not a day trader I am an investor. I am worried that the 6-8 month they are trying to tell me with no real certainty, turns into 8- 10 months and I start paying for rental vehicles, as I have handed my truck over.

Without a lot of extra mileage I am betting my truck goes up another 5-10 % in value come summer.
Maybe we will have a better idea of dealer supply then. At least more certainty to pick a date.

Not trying to time the market. That's not possible for anyone to do. The word bet was not a good word to use as I am not really betting on anything.
I can only form an opinion based on input and right now the professionals (new and used vehicle managers) are all telling me the same thing... the used car supply situation is going on for another year. Of course new and used supply is a top priority. They will have to start laying off sales staff if they do not get supply to sell . But when your New supply is waiting on parts from outside suppliers its more out of your control. My understanding (hearing from Manager employees) is Toyota has a better handle on the chip situation than others.

I won't commit to a vehicle that can not be guaranteed to come in 8-10 weeks max. 6 - 8 months to me might as well be 5 years. lol
In the end if numbers turn and the trade in value shrinks- I keep my truck. I like it and I am only 3 years into the 10 expected. But I also like the idea of making $7k on it after 3 years of use. So I will continue to watch and monitor and enjoy reading about everyone's experiences with the 22's. Living through them 8^0

I’m the guy that usually buys the ad vehicle- $24,500 MSRP Camry LE for $17,xxx. That scenario doesn’t exist right now so my thinking is to trade my overvalued Camry that I bought right for a vehicle or manufacturer that doesn’t typically discount very much from MSRP like say, Honda or even this new Tundra. Comparatively speaking Tundras are discounted less than the competition and with a new model, in any market, a discount from MSRP when it is first released would be somewhat challenging. So my thought is that right now the Tundra is priced ( if you can pay MSRP) similar to where it would be in a normal market for a brand new release but your trade value is inflated. Might not be a terrible time to make a deal if you can find MSRP with a truck that you like. Paying MSRP for a new F-150 changes the equation in my mind because they are usually heavily discounted. My 2 cents. Wife always gets a Camry because the Accord is never discounted but now neither are discounted and my old Camry is worth what I paid for it…..

If you are buying something off the lot right now - yeah you are close to MSRP.
But if you are putting in an order and can wait, they are discounted, they just can't tell you when they are coming in. thats been my experience.

I mean, I like the no secondary sale provision as a matter of principle, but how is it legally enforceable? Once you own something, title in hand, it's yours to do as you please. You can't contractually tell someone they can't sell their property.

The ADM clause is one thing. ok.
    But the no resell clause.
Look at it as if you were a dealer. Dealers don't care what you do with a vehicle once you drive away with it. In fact.. they would love for you to come back soon afterwards and say "it didn't meet my needs I want to trade it in". More business for them.
I do not see them supporting this unless Ford affected their allotment of vehicles in some way with the signed versus not signed resell contracts. jmo

Hmmm, I didn’t read the last part about reselling. If it turns out to be a POS, you should not be stuck with it. But as I am learning, there seem to be a lot of people who selectively buy hard to find or limited production models (Raptor, TRD Pro, etc…) new for MSRP—they’re big sticklers on paying NO markup—then they flip the vehicle at 8-12 months for a premium, and do it all over again.

2019 - yay, I just got 20% off MSRP on my new Tundra!

2022 - yay, the dealer didn't charge me a huge markup over MSRP on my new Tundra!

My how things have changed in 3 years.

I had to sign a clause on my f150 since I financed through ford motor credit. Can’t sell or take overseas (not including Canada or Mexico) for 1 year.

Or I lose all rebates and financing.

So after some reading i think ford is cracking down on pre sale mark up. Not mark up.

they are telling dealers they can’t charge or require more money beyond the $100 reservation fee to order one. But a dealer can charge an ADM prior to selling.

it’s honestly the dumbest thing ever and makes ford look worse. It’s saying yeah you csn order for no money and here is the price we’d charge, but because you have to purchase from a dealer you’re going to get gapped dry.

so you are getting rid of the F150 and getting a Tundra ?
anything significant you disliked with the F150 that caused the decision.
    thanks

I guess the days of BUYING from the dealer who offers the best price is over. When and if I BUY again, it'll probably be from a dealer that I successfully BOUGHT from in the past.

Nah it’s been great. I think the sync 4 system is better than the toyota. It’s cleaner and has way more capabilities. The zone lighting is awesome too. When you approach it lights up all around which is nice for the kids.

my only real complaint is the seat width. They’re comfortable and adjustable but my wide load might wear at bolsters quicker. I do like how wide and chair like the tundras are.

I ordered the 22 because the deposit is refundable so it gives me a chance to break in the ford to get an idea of reliability before the tundra arrives. I also like the way the tundra looks. I think those dedicated to the big 3 don’t realize this is where looks are headed with those sharp lines, dramatic grille, etc. I also want to try the full coil suspension. The lariat is smooth but if I can get smoother then why not. I’m a sucker for the ambient lighting and the digital review mirror. I also miss the full roll down rear window.

I’m going to do a thorough test and comparison when it arrives and if it ain’t great I’ll walk. But I can’t do that without ordering one since non are on the lot.

also if I order I can avoid this kind of interaction

I can add some more information to this “supply issue” and I hope I’m not going to be flagged for it because this is the truth. You can do your own research on this. I read an article that explains that “supply issues” are going to be increasing tenfold. They are requiring that “In about a week the vaccine mandate will mean around 30,000 cross-border truckers will be forced to shut down. Starting January 15, truckers will be forced to show proof of vaccine.” This is related to the US - Canada border trade industry. Do your own research because I don’t think I can paste the link here. But if this is true it will further impact production and supply issues. So far I have (2) tundra orders (SR5 and Pro) from the only dealer in So California that does not charge over MSRP and (1) Tremor from my local dealer in Orange County that also does not charge over MSRP. I’m doing multiple orders as backups. I need a new truck and can’t get cough without an option coming summertime if this shortage remains.

Toyota dealer said that I’m many many months away from the SR5 and a year or so perhaps more than that away from the PRO.

Ford dealer said 4-6 months away? Who knows.

I wish I could (perhaps it can) tow my 3,800 lbs (dry weight) single axle camper with a 4Runner (safely) because I would jump on that ASAP before Toyota ruins that 4Runner with a 4banger turbo.

I took a lot of smack in the mid 2000's for driving a 1stGen Ridgeline. It was mostly Dodge, Ford and GM guys up north in cottage country. But when I was pulling their boat out of the water or bringing it to lake they just shut right up. Toyota guys never criticized it. Mine had a leer cap and the cab was as big as the Dodge Ford GM fullsize inside. Not as big as the 2.5 gen Tundra. It is the biggest.

The power roll down window is a really really big deal in many ways. Unless you have had it you can't comment. I am trying to decide though if that huge camel hump running through the back of the 2022 Tundra is an even bigger deal 8^( ....

So the ford is flat surface and its pretty nice to have extra stuff on the center without sticking up into the console or anything. I haven’t need my cab for hauling yet but if I did my underseat storage would like flat and be pretty flat and able to load.

New tundra storage doesn’t remove and that hump is pretty large. If you use the cab to haul or move stuff the tundra is worthless in that aspect.

I am having issues ordering. I dont know where they get these car dealership people.

    Ford and Toyota.

And they want you to come in in person. I dont get it. Its so easy with the internet to pretty much figure out what works for you. I dont have time. Hell I dont have time to jack with it on a 6 figure vehicle purchase much less for an SR or XL.

I may put some money into one of my old trucks and avoid the new one for now.

On the ford the floor is raised to hide the hump.
