Yeah, that's a factor - I keep vehicles for 3-4 years. As long as they make it that long without a ton of headaches, it's fine.

The Tundra is still cheaper even with the 5-figure discount on a Ford. But the Ford is subjectively nicer.

You can remote start the truck with your key without subscription. Same thing happened with my 2020 Tacoma. Subscription ended but I was still able to 3-click-then-hold the lock button up until the day I traded it in.

I was just playing with the build and price on the Ford site and it seems like they started doing some GM-style weird things with their packages. For example, the XLT comes stock with 17" wheels. If you get the max towing package, you have to get 20" wheels unless you opt for bucket seats with the centre console, in which case you have to have 18" wheels.

slowly but surely realizing why Toyota does packages and pre determined configurations, we'll see how far they take it over time

The Tundra comes with a Silver Bullet feature.
    Full Roll Down Rear Window.
That allows you to get a Crewcab for people and you can also place a liner along the bottom of the rear window when open and you can carry really long items that won't even fit in the longer bed truck.
When I bought my truck seems eons now, I wanted the DC but the deal was on the Crewcab.
I am glad I did now, and fwiw the new Tundra DC is NO DC.
Its one big reason I passed on it.

isn't it? I've been on these truck type forums forever and Ive never seen this to this extent.

there is a list of gen2/2.5 people that regularly respond faster than any gen 3 owner, the millisecond there is someone unhappy with something or there is a problem

odd stuff for sure, I don't get it.

Yeah, they did some weird stuff. Like you can get a crew cab short bed without chrome, but not a crew cab standard bed. I really don't understand that one. Ford was always the one that would let you build just about anything you wanted but they're slowly changing their ways.

lol, I feel for you if its anything like this tester I had, it was awful. seemed like I was sitting on two metal bars running parallel with my legs, ugh.

the ford and tundra seats are so much better.

First they gave me an expedition and it rattled bad I took it back. I don’t what it is but these large suv class that I got have all been pretty bad. I know rentals get beat on but at 20k miles the durability was awful. Wagoneer I wouldn’t mind looking into getting one, but, stellantis. Yukon and Tahoe seats suck and the expedition was just a large absolute piece of shit. People really drop 90k on these things?

ya, I've never been impressed with any of them. I ruled out the sequoia since they also fucked up the storage and third row stuff, but they are nicer IMO

JMO - There is a difference in being on the hook for $90k in loan and dropping $90k cash on one these things.
From what I am seeing the Pandemic reinforced to the (pre-Boomer crowd) that life is short, live for today (lifestyle) over savings, and use leverage for whatever you need. Whats the worse that can happen here? They take the vehicle away from you.

And with tech in vehicles today ..they wait till you are parked, not driving, then disable the vehicle, not drivable until a rep for the Lien holder picks it up.
The code is parked in vehicles - it just need to be activated.

I have not been on the sites to price these vehicles. Toyota is not in the business of losing money.
So it means the Big 3 are way over priced at MSRP - and I am assuming forget about above MSRP sales (in the US) these days except for specialty vehicles.

The dealer that I'd be going through was willing to go about $3k under sticker on a Tundra on the lot, but it was an SR5. We didn't get into pricing on an allocation request, but they did say they've never sold above MSRP and their owner is adamant that they never will. So, I figure worst case on a Tundra is MSRP. That's in the $64,000 ballpark for what I want.

My best case scenario is $68,500 on an F-150 right now. That's with invoice pricing and a private cash offer I have available. I've never gotten a Ford dealer around here to go under invoice pricing. A few advertise at that but won't budge below it, most advertise at or near sticker and you have to fight them down. It's common in the midwest and some people will travel to a huge Iowa dealer because they will do factory orders at 3% under invoice. I ran the numbers once and by the time you add in the travel costs, you really aren't saving much.

Granted, the trucks aren't apples to apples because it's impossible to build an F-150 to match my ideal Tundra now. When you look at it that way, the Ford really isn't that much more since it's a more expensive configuration.

84 months is nuts. The only reason I did 72 on this truck is because at the time everything was 0%. It makes more sense to keep that money in the bank at 4.25%. Ordinarily, I wouldn't want to go past 60.

While I do agree that vehicles are way overpriced including Toyotas. I think it's more a difference in how the big 3 trained its buyers. The big 3 trained people to expect discounts and play the look how good a deal I got game to move their product. Toyota is pretty much here is the price and this is what you pay for it. (with some exceptions) most Toyota discounting is different from the big 3. Same game different approach. You see it in all kinds of products. Once you go down the discount game its almost impossible to go back.

If I learned anything whichever truck has comfier seats it’s the one to buy. At this point all new trucks seems to have issues no matter the brand.

It depends on how long you want to keep them or if you like to buy them used. If you get rid of them when the warranty is over, any of them should be fine.

To go longer, higher mileage or purchased used, it is playing Russian roulette reliability wise. Do you want 1 bullet in the chamber (Toyota) or 4 (Stellantis)?

Ram's reliability issues are what keep me away from them. This Ford hasn't been fantastic in that area, but not nearly as bad as friends and coworkers with newer Ram trucks, fortunately. I know one guy who's been stranded on the side of the road twice in a one year old Ram with low miles. Too bad, because the Rams ride so nice, have awesome interiors, and are priced a bit better than Ford or GM.

I do think I get too hung up on the double VS crew cab and the reliability factor that push me in the Tundra's direction. I own a 16 ft car hauler and have friends with dump trailers so I can move anything I need to regardless of the truck's bed size. I also haven't been keeping trucks out of warranty, so reliability issues won't cost me anything.

So regarding the Ram... In 2019 they introduced their optional eTorque mild hybrid system that helps truck get going from the start to save some gas... I assume that your friend had issue with this etorque system that got him stranded? Since 2023 etorque is mandatory now...

Besides the etorque, rams are almost never get stranded... They got issues with manifold bolts snapping, and lifters/camshaft failing at 100k miles but these are usually noisy and take months to get so bad where it'll get you stranded.

Heres a question for you - would you rather suffer with less comfortable seats for 15 years, or enjoy the comfortable seats but buy new truck every 5 years?

His is actually one of the last EcoDiesels. Don't know the exact details but I guess both major issues were electrical related. Truck stalled, dash lit up like a Christmas tree and the truck wouldn't attempt to start again or anything.

In 15 years, I'd have around 350,000 miles on something - I doubt I'd entertain having a daily driver with that kind of mileage on it.

Granted I did this deal when every brand truck was selling well over MSRP, but with travel cost being under $1000 it still saved me $6000 off MSRP

When everything was MSRP or over, definitely a good move. At this point I can get invoice locally again so the difference isn't as significant.

For sure. Honestly, Iowa to NC in a new whip was a pretty fun road trip. Spent the night in KY and loaded up on Bourbon.
