All new trucks are pretty damn nice in their own right. All about personal preference...

New Dodge technology is really intriguing. Remember before the 22’s were released and Toyota teased that revolutionary technology was coming in the new Tundra….

Probably because most truck owners don't actually do anything with their half tons that couldn't be done with a full EV. So now you have a truck where you have to take care of both EV components and ICE components and tote around all that extra weight of a gas engine, generator, and 28 gallons of fuel when you probably dont need it 95% of the time.

And I am not saying its a bad idea, I actually really like it and when/if I go to look at new trucks this will be a serious contender. But my guess is that most MFG's looked at the use case of their half tons and didn't think it made sense. Reality is that most half ton buyers probably don't think 100% logically about how they use the trucks. Its the "what if's". What if I have to drive cross country, what if one day I bought a giant trailer and had to tow it 1000 miles.

My truck gets used to tow at least 50% of its miles so the EV thing just doesnt make sense for my use case, but this could.

Most people dont use a truck like you do though. Most 1/2 ton people probably could get away with an EV truck. In fact, most people could probably just not have a truck(or truck based SUV) at all and be totally fine.

I used my raptor to pick up 7 am Starbucks, Saturday soccer game, Tuesday soccer practices and Sunday Costco runs lol

I finally realized I was that guy . But to be fair so were most of the raptor owners (no shade to DFS)

All good here, my truck is primarily on mine/exploration roads that can be pretty bad when it's used at work. It definitely does it's fair share of "commuting" too though. Realistically I could have a Tesla 4-5 days per week and be just fine.

My trucks are inclement weather vehicles. It has done hauling that couldn't be accomplished with any other vehicle but rarely. For the 3 of us my wife somehow manages to fill the bed and some of the cab plus we have 3 bikes on the rack when we do a beach rental so I guess I feel pretty manly loading up for that trip. I at least resisted the urge for an off road factory lifted trim of some truck or another. With her disintegrating hip I'm sure the wife would have given me an earful every time she hoisted herself up.

The new Ram sounds impressive. Seeing the complications of working on my Powerboost I also see the electronics issues Rams can have already. I Was watching a youtube vid from the guy who chronicles his 200k with his Ram the other day where he went through an ordeal trying to figure out why his air suspension had one or more corners of the truck on the ground at random times when he came back to it.

My Ford Dealership has straight up told me my Powerboost is complicated and has been educational for them. I know Ford didn't rotate all their senior techs through some class where they mastered the Powerboost systems. They may have been shown the basics of what's what but otherwise have to conference call for guidance from engineers in Dearborn when shit gets real. It's about code and software.

Looks like there is a lot of that coming across manufacturers. I'll admit, maybe straight electric is simpler but these elaborate hybrid systems will challenge techs.

Unless there’s something I’m not seeing, I would argue that this is actually less complicated than standard hybrids like Powerboost

I'm also a bit worried how reliable that Ram truck will be...

With Ram still having stone age issues with their hemi manifold bolts snapping all of the time, and hemi lifters and camshaft failing for the past 15 years, I'm not sure I have faith in them to actually design a reliable rocket ship EV truck and educate their dealers to service it

A dealer rewired my tailgate due to a recall for it dropping on its own and ended up causing a bug that made the headlights turn on by themselves with the truck off, holding it for 15 days looking for the bad computer module.

It rolled around in my head and made me think until I relented and purchased the premium 8 year extended warranty for the first time since I have owned vehicles to put myself at ease. I bet that's an area where automakers will start to do well.

Ram is the only full size pickup truck to make the Consumer Reports reliable list in 2022.
Tundra, F150 GMC / Chevy all came in below average. This really is about reliability for the first few years only, isn't it?

It seems like the Rams have a small number of problems. But the ones they have are very common, and they're unable/unwilling to figure out how to fix any of them even if given 10-15 years to analyze.

Toyota will send engineers to crawl all over a Truck and even Ford has done muiltiple
Revisions of the Ecoboost to tackle failures. Been hearing about Ram exhaust manifold bolts since I financed my first vehicle without my parents' help.

The guys I know with Rams like them alot. My two current trucks are from another era. I recognize that any future truck I buy, any brand, will need to be a warranty vehicle now. Meaning you do not own it without full warranty. So its now about which features fit my needs most. With that I know that the next truck will have to have hybrid and battery capability and it will replace both my Tundra and 4Runner. That means it needs to have full time AWD capability like my 4Runner as well. This Ramcharger is the front runner now. I got the email from Ram a few days ago and didnt look at it. Dr. Z.s post made me look. It checks off all the boxes. A separate screen for passenger now too - LOL . I think you have to agree they know their interiors?

cool stuff, but I wouldn't touch that for years until after its out and see how it does in the real world and see if the build quality has improved.

also, the towing range in inclement weather would be interesting to see real world results

lastly, what are we talking here 100K?

    Yup...

And remember the Ram Eco Diesel small engine? After several revisions, it's gone after 10 years?

Let me know when you see the Toyota engineers crawling around... I'd like them to crawl around those engine bearings please to tell us what's up

you know damn well they are, but they aren't going to say anything.

Honestly, I understand, when my business has a phuck up, we don't broadcast it all over, we just fix it as fast and best we can. We also make sure to take some time to make sure the fix doesnt make it worse or not fix it.

I still trust toyota more than anyone else by far to fix things that go wrong.

all that said, like others have stated, any new fully loaded truck now a days is a extended warranty purchase, way too much to go wrong in these complicated trucks. I do love the tech and set-up in my 2023 platinum, the air suspensions is super nice for towing and hauling for starters.

Point is since I owned a Dakota 20 years ago the mentality of the Dodge/Ram brand more than others always seems to have been that the ground up redesign is when serious defects will get addressed. Maybe.

A mentality that persists Even through changes in ownership.

I get told off royally when I call them Dodge. I'm older. I used to own Jeep Cherokees when they were AMC products.
And guess what they had full time 4wd back then. Get with it Toyota. You put full time 4wd in the new Tacoma and not the Tundra?
I have two members in the "familia" growing families, that have pickup trucks and quite frankly they do not really need pickup trucks. All their needs would be served much better (JMO) with an AWD Sienna.
    But thats the target market.

I know a guy that can't stand his wife reaching over and touching the screen. So if he sees that picture he's gonna shit. lol

The only way I trade in my truck is if the new one comes with proven Hybrid, Battery, Full time AWD capability - just to name 3,
None of those options come cheap.

we also have a 2023 25th Anniversary AWD Sienna , that thing is super nice.

all black interior, 1500 watt inverter, fold down TV screen, second row as ottomans that come out from the seats.

Toyota did a great job on it

ya, we got lucky and got allocated a 25th anniversary model we wanted, they only made 2525 of them, we really wanted this one trim

the interior is down right nice in this model, black headliner, etc.

when we got the allocation, it had a tow hitch, I had them take that off which they did so that was good. Didnt need that

    page 4 of the brochure,

its cool since its based on teh sport version but has a lot fancy goodies from the upper trims, cooled and heated seats, memory, etc and the best looking interior BY FAR

We will know in the next few months if we see any more recent failures of these engine bearings than the latest reported case of March 2023 build date

Yeah, I’m that guy too, but it’s okay bc I love the truck. Probably the first truck I’ve had that I don’t see myself getting bored with, even if I’m not using it for its intended purposes.

My thoughts on my last few trucks:
2015 and 2017 Tundras were solid trucks, nothing special about them.
2021 Ram 1500 Limited was extremely nice and rode amazing with the 4 corner air suspension. Interior was a quite enjoyable place to be. Very comfortable. The etorque 5.7 was smooth.
2023 F150 Raptor may not be as solid as the Tundras, or as nice as the Ram, but way more fun to drive and it just has road presence.
