Typo, meant Iowa . Granger is who I was going to go with. Of course the GM at my selling dealer was gracious enough to waive the 100 dollar fee for buying his over priced warranty this late, making it very hard for me to go another route.

yeah i think it's like 1750 or 1800 for the 8 year plan i want. After my ordeal in the dealer's one crappy loaner waiting for them sort out software issues from what should have been a 1 day repair I'm getting the rental component.

I was at the Ford dealer for parts today and was thinking about your module issues and the ones I had as well. The supply chain was already barely functional waiting for modules. Now, it's non existent. I'm glad your situation sorted ahead of this and smart move getting a rental reimbursement.

I'll have to find the article or ad.

But basically it stated that 1 EV vehicle has the same amount of battery rare earth materials as 6 Plug in Hybrids or 90 Hybrids, which both options are far better in total for the environment than just one EV.

On the Lightning, I think in doing truck stuff and towing, its hard to only have 90-100 mile range if you bought a truck to pull a camper.

ya EVs for truck duty is a ways off

I like to tow my boat 600 miles to get up to where I go in MN with a few stops as possible. there arent even any charging stations up that way anyways

so you really need a gas or hybrid truck.

and good point Bannerman, every time you see a charger its all packed in and no way to get a trailer in so you'd have to drop the trailer to charge, fuck that.

I just bought a 2018 chevy bolt as a cheap runabout 2 weeks ago and so far my wife and I are super happy with it. Im on board with the EV thing.

But an EV truck wont be replacing my ICE truck for a while

I actually can use an EV truck as I need a covered camper shell for my supplies and tools, and most of my drives are around the city... No more than 20-50 miles per day total. Then can charge up at home. Weekends may be maybe 100 miles total going around mall crawling etc.

And for the long trips... Well, that's a problem and I would need wife to get a larger gas suv, but issue is that it's not really safe to travel in an suv as your luggage may get stolen around large cities...

Earlier this year, Toyota ousted a CEO who had previously expressed hesitations about moving toward a fully electric lineup. With a new CEO at the helm, it then restructured the company around EVs, dubbing its luxury Lexus brand as its flagship for electrics.

    https://www.pcmag.com/news/toyota-inks-deal-to-mass-produce-solid-state-ev-batteries-with-932-mile

So they have a CEO in charge now that is focused on EV's.
Toyota Inks Deal to Mass Produce Solid State EV Batteries With 932-Mile Range
10 mins to charge for a 932 mile range is pretty good.
Only a matter of time before battery tech advances to a point to make it attractive.
Can they make the 5 year window shorter? If they can maybe a Tundra Hybrid based on range gets introduced.
With all the new tech that is coming, I hope my Milwaukee tool batteries don't become obsolete too quick.
They always make you buy new tools with new batteries.

If you go travel around large cities, and park in tourist spots, there's a good chance your window will get busted and your luggage stolen.

I have a ARE DCU camper shell with no windows for that exact reason so nobody sees what I have in my bed and it's hard to break in.

To answer your question, while others commented that they can't have an EV truck and why, I commented why EV truck would work for me

Heres the thing though. It still takes the same energy to move 932 miles regardless of the battery type. So somehow you have to put 932 miles into the vehicle in 10 minutes and it would require an immense amount of power. Just take my Bolt for example, which is a relatively small, light and efficient EV. It does 260 miles from a 66 kwh battery. That means you would need 237 kwh battery to go 932 miles assuming the weight of the car stayed the same.

Charging 237 kwh battery in 10 minutes would mean you have to charge at 1.4 MEGAWATTS. For just a econobox commuter car nevermind a truck or SUV or whatever.

Griswold did not understand the relationship of the three Electricity amigos.
    Amps Volts Watts.jpg

The post was to show that Toyota has someone in charge now that wants to move the tech forward. For my needs I am waiting for the right hybrid pickup the way I use my truck.
Bring me a truck that gets 18-20 mpg on the highway like mine does now in gas mode.
But allow me to switch to a small stored electric energy reserve and I get to choose how I want to use this energy with a toggle switch. Highway, city stop and go or trails. My choice.
Maybe highway I get 50 miles, and City and Trails would be elapsed time range.

Fwiw - how I am thinking about this.
When they say 932 miles. I am assuming it is a battery tech with long range, stores energy for a long time, and when you use it daily, you only use 10-15% of it so this charge takes 10 mins.
Watts doesn’t change. Amps doesn’t change. Volts doesn’t change.
What changes is the type of battery used. I am thinking of it like the difference between SSD and HDD. Think of todays truck hybrid batteries as HDD tech.
SSDs - lighter, faster than HDDs. SSD load data faster than HDD
SSDs less likely to break than HDDs because HDDs are comprised of moving parts.
SSDs are quieter than hard drives.
A PC, with the best hard drive, is noisier than SSD and can send vibrations up that you feel if you use an external stand.
    HDDs are cheaper than SSDs.
Imagine if they brought these benefits to future batteries and tech allowed prices to drop.
That’s how I am thinking on this and hope Toyota does too going forward with their battery tech.

Ideally I would want a Plug In hybrid full sized truck. Allow me to get 20-25 miles on electric, then hybrid rest of the time getting what I get now. That was what I was hoping Toyota was doing after spending a decade doing no advancements to the Gen2 Tundra.

Pretty sure we're 25 - 30 years away from me being even remotely interested in an electric truck. My requirements are pretty high:

    - 700+ km range for daily driving
    - no loss of range at -40 degrees
    - 500+ km range while towing 8000 pounds through the mountains at -40 degrees
    - able to charge from flat zero to completely full in under 10 minutes at any existing service station location.

Basically, I demand the capability that my gas truck has. Until that happens, I'm not interested.

They will find Bigfoot in Muskoka before they make your truck *^0

(Gotta love the Google imbedded code on laptops. Article shows up in the inbox minutes after the last post.)
    Time for a cleanup.

And fwiw - for every year they made no changes to the previous gen Tundra; they made it worth more for every year to the truck guy that just wants to keep it for XX years and not worry about it knowing how Toyota uses the KISS principal when building. Well they used to anyway. not sure if they still do.

That's fine. Bigfoot would be cooler than an electric truck. I can see us getting something like an electric RAV4 but trucks will always have to be gas or diesel. Electric vehicle are for the foreseeable future, nothing more than toys and commuters. Real work gets done with dino juice.

I just got the 8/100k premium plan with the 60/day rental coverage for 1710 after redeeming 30k fordpass points. I am curious to see if I get a reaction next time I am in for service at my dealer and they see it and realize I didn't get it there after asking about it. Feels right, that gap left between the 3/36 and the 8 year Hybrid component warranty for all these non hybrid powertrain related electronics made me nervous. Once it's confirmed I'll cancel my Geico coverage and save myself those few pennies per month I guess. They seem redundant and the plan that covers a mid sized sedan or compact SUV rental is the keeper.

Worry free motoring about 2 years past when I retire, then I decide what to do next.
