I think what he's saying is sell the Legacy Tundra right next to the New Gen Tundra, similar to what Ram did with 4th/5th gens for sale at the same time for a few years.

Because you're tired of the 2.5 gen you'd be in a 3rd gen. many others would opt for the Legacy Tundra. Choice!

To be fair I think Ram pulled this off because they were moving 1500 production to a different plant, so they had 2 locations building the 2 different gens, while Toyota only has 1 half ton truck plant in the US.

Everyone has an opinion. The 2 and 2.5 gens just look old and worn out to me. I much prefer the 22s.
Again everyone has their own opinion, but reality check: If the turbo part fails, the truck still runs (at least to 60 mph by report) and you get it replaced. It does not require removal of the cab, but that is not the big deal that 'facebook mechanics' make it out to be. If your car catches on fire, or the wheel falls off, your fuel pump quits, your driveshaft drops on the road, or your accelerator sticks open -- you're not going anywhere. If you prefer those situations, then you ain't right.

Since I started this, I am assuming 'our Toyota Tech' is referring to me.

I never said these would be 'significantly worse than the previous Tundras'.

As a Master Diagnostic Technician of 27 years, I talk to a lot of higher up people at Toyota, including field technical specialists and engineers. Without getting into details, there is a lot of talk about problems with the 2022 Tundra.
As far as the new Tundra being more complicated, it is no more complicated than other Toyota models, Tundra just hadn't gotten the technology until 2022.

    In point of fact,

    1. No one prefers those.
    2. I've never experienced that with ANY vehicle I've owned, including my 2020 Tundra.

Lots of places online as TSBs and Recalls are mandated to be public information. As well, most sites will show exactly how many vehicles are unaffected. @Kung , I'm glad your 2020 was not one of the 158,489 affected by the electrical recall, or the 1,525,742 vehicles affected by the failing fuel pump, or the 183,397 vehicles tragically affected by the weak turn signals (oh the horror). The point is that faulty parts show up in lots of vehicles. The furor on this site over the yet to be known number of vehicles with the faulty turbo part is unreasonable and is constantly blown out of proportion. If the sky is falling over this, it has fallen over and over with every model year (except you, 2012, kudos!). Facebook, forums and the internet have put drama train in overdrive and a lot of passengers are more than happy to jump on board.
To answer your question @68rs75z28 here is one example of a site you can see recalls and the numbers involved:

Well, of course. The same was/is the case with the Bronco and the issues it's dealt with.

The main difference, as I see it, is that the Tundra

    - has a better reliability track record in general, and it's not an imagined one - it's statistical; and
    - has been anticipated for literally YEARS and Toyota drug people out.

Now it's finally here...and while I'd argue it's an improvement over the current one, it's not exactly leaps and bounds better in all areas, AND they're way the hell behind (for factors both within and beyond their control), AND there's more than a few issues (some fit and finish; turbos; infotainment; etc.)

I get that it's not entirely Toyota's fault; and they're somewhat a victim of circumstance. When the 2007 and 2014 rolled out, social media didn't play anywhere NEAR the role that they do now; and there was no pandemic or supply chain issues to deal with.

Regardless, due to those same circumstances, the rollout of the 2022 at the least *looks* far more problematic than the 2007 and the 2014 did, even if (and I've not checked) the issues are comparable.

Fair point! Do you think there’s any reason why the 3rd gen would be less long-lived than previous Tundras? Seems that Toyota still overbuilds all their parts, and once the initial issues are ironed out, it will be a great truck.

There may be some growing pains with this platform, that’s common when a completely new vehicle is rolled out. Of course I think it’ll get ironed out, but Toyota MIGHT lose some customers that will look elsewhere if the 2022 proves to be problem plagued.

I could list 20 Toyota’s that had some issues when they were rolled out, but I don’t think any of them were as anticipated as the 2022 Tundra. If with a turbo issue or whatever, Toyota will make it right, but that still doesn’t make some people happy.

Again, my experience is pretty extensive with Toyota, so I do have much insider information. I’m worried at this product, I hope that my worries are wrong. I’m looking forward to the hybrid version being out there for a while and seeing how stable that is.

Remember this truck is a Toyota and is a great quality vehicle, these might just be some small bumps in the road. I hope ao.

I would say the amount of electronics is begging to be problematic, sensors and BS everywhere. reading the amount of warnings and beeps, etc for example is concerning.

One thing that I've been thinking about is how resale on this new generation will be since that's always been a thing with previous generations.

Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a previous generation used, regardless of miles. Having owned two Tundra's, an FJ, a 4Runner and a Tacoma I have always felt that Toyota products were mechanically solid, even with some of the known issues.

I don't foresee me feeling the same thing about this one down the road, I will say the same about the ecoboost. I just don't have confidence that these newer TT's are going to be running 250-300k miles without some large investments in repair.

Looks like the drive line isn’t sitting in the rear differential straight. The oil is being flung all over the bottom of the truck so I assume it’s that seal that’s leaking.

Every square inch of the underside of the truck in that area is covered in oil from being flung from the drive shaft. It appears to only be actually leaking while moving

That's crazy, I would take it to the dealer asap.
Probably still plenty of oil in the diff to drive it straight there

Unfortunately that the a trend for any truck brand. The Dodge Ram has has had its issues over the yeats that everyone claims is a absolute deal breaker and that all Rams are junk because of those problems. Every Ram owner Ive asked how like they their trucks has said "I absolutely love it". You type it into the internet the best 1/2 Ton truck most pages point to the Ram. I think unfortunately people focus on the bad only and generalize it across the board.

I hope so.. I’m taking it in tomorrow. It looks like it’s leaking from the seal but it also looks like the shaft isn’t entering the diff straight. I haven’t ever seen the inside of a rear diff but I assume it’s riding on a bearing of some kind that keeps everything aligned. I’m sure I’ll be without the truck for awhile. Be curious to see how long.

edit, I think what I’m seeing as the shaft not entering straight is actually the seal that’s being pushed out.

I absolutely loved my 2019 Ram 1500. Until I was sitting in the dealership for the 10th time getting something fixed and asked, isn't my time worth more than this? I was pissed even as things were getting fixed under warranty. Then thinking, wow, think of paying for all these repairs... The Ram drove better than my Tundra, had a better stereo/infotainment, more features... And yet hear I am in this old truck that debuted in 2007, happier and confident despite that on paper, it's not as good in many ways.

Well said. I, too, am fully aware of all my truck's shortcomings compared to the competition. But the one thing we have is a pretty rock solid, dependable, long-lasting platform. That metric alone is worth it to me.

It wasn't just you! I tried the 2019 Ram also. I lost track, but I believe it had 15-16 trips in for service in the first year. I traded it and took quite a step down to a Nissan Titan (which for the record has been the most trouble free vehicle I've ever owned).

I was missing the smooth ride and technology so I traded that for a 22 Tundra. Unfortunately, I'm on day 15 of ownership and this truck hasn't left the service center yet. I hope this is a fluke, one and done problem...really bad start!
