Appreciate it. Seems like almost everything works with the usual 12v red/black wires. I've pulled open the positive post under the hood and just seems like a temporary place. I'll wire back to under the seat like you mentioned.

Probably start with a hood solar panel just to get a hang of things before looking into lights and a switch and taking wires to the bed.

So I spoke with the owner of switch pros and he said we should be fine installing the SP power module in the engine bay and tapping into the fuse box there. This way you won’t need to run power leads into the cab.

I’ll try to install mine in a few weeks and will share my feedback.

Any other winch installs similar to @DexterL ? If so please post up your experiences.

I got the garmin switch going in mine right now. Pick it up today. Switch is mounted under the back seat. I have a winch bolted in, but we’re trying to come up with a better way for power. Instead of 400a cables running the length of the truck pretty much.

I will ordered an Auxbeam, was only $105. Will place above fuse box and tap into fuse box to an ACC. From there will wire back to 12v. Will use this set up to power a set of Baja squadron pros for now.

I’m also planning on wiring in my solar hood through cab to the lensun inverter then to 12v. Anyone else with a hybrid set up so this? I was reading through manual and it says not to charge 12v while hybrid battery is on. It also says not to charge 12v in car as it can give off noxious fumes so not sure if trickle charging counts. Anyone else have thoughts of hooking a 100w hood panel direct to 12v on hybrid?

you can’t just link up to the jump points under the hood in/next to fuse box? I’d imagine that they would have to be a heavy gauge with good connection/ground

In case anyone was wondering about wiring up hood solar panel to the 12v in a hybrid version, totally fine per Toyota tech. Asked at my 5k tire rotation. Will wire up soon.

Regarding the solar comment: The 12v battery is charged off of the DC/DC converter, which gets its power from the lithium ion battery inside the truck. Also, the Hybrids are started with the Li-ion battery and hybrid motor. Not the conventional starter, even though one is still there, but its main function is to kick in when in extremely cold temps that the HV motor doesn't like.

Effectively, while the 12v battery can ben discharged, its purpose is to run the vehicle side stuff only, which its smaller than the conventional version. However, the Li-ion battery handles the brunt of the work from the electrical standpoint.

Figured i'd share this info in the thread since it doesn't seem to be well known.

Isn't the hybrid battery Ni-MH? Sorry if I'm confusing something here.

I have a couple Teslas, was pretty familiar with how HV batteries worked but had no idea in a hybrid tundra that the starter runs off the HV battery and not the 12v. I guess that makes my solar hood kind of useless in terms of preventing a dead car deep in the woods aspect.

But that should also make the car more reliable as the HV battery should be much more reliable and hard to deplete than a 12v. So if I heard you right, even if I managed to leave an accessory light on and fully discharged the 12v, the car should still start up.

You're right. its NiMH. Just habit to type Li-ion.

Technically, you can't leave the car on all night with accessories on. It will shut off after like an hour, safety thing. Also, just to clarify, the starter isn't ran off the high voltage lines. Its still 12V. The engine is started with the hybrid motor, which is technically on the high voltage lines. Otherwise, you're good.

Interesting choice they went NiMH but also makes sense in a lot of ways.

Thanks for all the info about the hybrid system, if you have any other insight that would pertain to us who will tinker with the system please do share, it is much appreciated. You have no idea how long it took me to get it okayed to add solar input into the 12v battery. I think the main idea is leave the high voltage battery and anything that goes with it alone.

I'll add here that from what I've heard/read the conventional starter is also there and used in the cold as it turns over the engine at a more progressive speed versus the immediate turning of the HV motor, this allows some lubrication before the explosions start.

On another note, has anyone with a hybrid noticed that in 4x4 the electric motor is used far less than when in 2x4? I've only gone into 4x4 on snow covered roads so it's cold as well but is there another reason for this? Seems to me where there would be more load, the electric motor would help the same or even more. But I'm certainly no expert.

Engine is supposed to stay on while in 4WD. So you shouldn’t see it turn off while in 4WD.

We’ll update, had ditch lights, auxbeam and solar hood panel installed by a reputable local shop. After install while light and switch function, a bunch of error messages similar to my ordeal with getting my windshield tinted occurred (ie hybrid engine check light, and 6 other notifications). The big screen is also black. Tech is friends with a local Toyota dealer, sounds like a hybrid? Supra recently had similar issues after an accessory light install. Not sure what issue is but hope they just need to clear the codes.

Thanks. Sounds like the issue might be the fusible link somewhere in line from the jump post positive (passenger fuse box) to battery. After install of parts, lights wouldn’t turn on. So they troubleshot and later found vehicle throwing codes. On their way taking car to Toyota power to accelerator died and they had to tow to Toyota.

All super weird and they say fusible link is on back order for 3-4 weeks :(

if anyone who has better understanding could help explain, I just don’t know how enough current could have melted the link with this installation.

This is exactly why I didn’t mess with the engine bay and the post in there- wires everything directly to the battery in the back or fused in (radar detector and TRD pro lights)

Yeah I don’t understand, as far as I know they wired to back battery.
