I find it comical that we hear a sound file and think it's the exact same issue as we have. There are what, half a dozen ideas here in this thread to a possible reason for the noise? It could be nothing, it could be a rattling heat shield, it could be whatever caused the rebuild. Don't get me wrong, asking questions like this are exactly what forums are for (well, and MPG questions) but sometimes there isn't an obvious or correct answer.

To make it even more funny, my truck didn't make the noise this morning. I got out of the truck an listened for a good 15 seconds while it was warming up. Maybe my truck only makes the noise (my version of it at least) when warm and at idle. Another piece to the puzzle. My puzzle...your's may vary.

All kidding aside, the motor's architecture is old. It probably sounded solid a decade ago, but not in today's world of NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) engineering. Same for the tranny. Coming from a 2016 F-150, I've had to remind myself multiple times this isn't a modern engine. I think if the OP has documented the concern with the dealer and continues to monitor it, then that's about all you can do at this point.

If there's one close, try taking it to another dealer first & have them take a look.

Since when is it my responsibility to simply agree with you even though a Toyota mechanic has said its normal?

    Nice logic.

And was it making the noise when you bought it? You've been asked that several times and never answered the question.

    Good luck.

    Yep, it’s

This is what the mechanic told me.
“that’s normal lifter noise for a direct injection engine. I even started some other trucks and compared it.”

So their normal is based on listening to other trucks? Ok well I’m also listening to other trucks which DO NOT sound like mine.
Perhaps you need to entertain the possibility that the dealership doesn’t want to mess with it, and they want me to go away. You see, the dealership won’t simply fix it without communication with Toyota corporate to verify it needs to be fixed or not. THEY HAVE NOT TAKEN THOSE STEPS. And again, they are lying to me when they say other trucks sound just like this, because I can show them several which do not.
And matter of fact, next time they tell me this, I’m going to choose 3 trucks at random on their lot and have them start them up and we will compare.

you are weak sauce Mr. 2008 tundra. Get out of here, seriously.

Our 5.7 engine isnt old either its really related to the 5.0 which is mondern both have dohc and aluminum heads. They are very similar but i rather the 5.7 engine for more low end torque hopefully they will revise the 5.7 to be better which it can but by all means its not old. Old is 5.0 old school from 1993 fox body with b303 cam not our 5.7...

we dont have direct injection we have fuel injection where the fuel and air mixes in the runner ontop of the valve not in the cylinder.

boom, they lied to me. He said direct injection. This is even more proof they are trying to get rid of me. They want to see if they can get out of fixing it, but I’m not gonna let my truck sound like a 1998 Honda Civic with 300,000 miles or a ragged out Subaru. He he.

I already told you what I would do with an independent mechanic and verifying there is potentially a problem other than what you hear vs the Toyota mechanic.

You're hilarious, what does the year of my pickup have to do with anything?

Maybe. Or maybe he's just wrong...which is just as bad. Either way, it seems you're fighting a losing battle at this dealer. Get a second opinion from another dealer. You can take it to any Toyota dealer for warranty work.

Lets hear another video to see where its coming from on top of the engine or at the bottom. I completely agree get a second opinion at another dealer. If the engine failed than the dealer can get sued which is more money than the engine...

    Food for thought.

I don’t want to tell you what to do, but don’t mention to the second dealer what transpired at the first dealer. This way they can give you independent feedback and you can weigh what they both said against each other so you can formulate a better plan as to what to do next.

Also, ask to physically accompany the technician on a test drive and show him/her before or after where the noise was originating from and what you observed etc.

I’m curious to see what happens.

I was thinking exact same thing. Maybe the technician was just wrong. Lying is a powerful word. Sometimes people make mistakes. I make lots of them and regularly. You never know what’s in someone else’s mind. So try to have an open mind and give people the benefit of doubt while they are trying to help you or solve an issue. And if they don’t want to listen, then go to another dealer. Were they disrespectful ? Were they arrogant ? Did they listen to you or provide you an opportunity to explain your observations ? I’m curious to know.

I understand you paid a lot for this truck, same as all of us. But every problem has a solution. Sometime it takes time. I had a 2018 tundra with TSS sensor issue that never ended. The sensor was replaced three separate times. And it still didn’t work. The yellow light would come on with the error message and the cruise control and what have you would stop working. I eventually discovered how to reactivate the cruise control while the error light was on. You know how I found out ? I worked with the dealer and he showed me while I was getting my original issue resolved.

It was all documented. Every time it happened, I took a pic and went to the dealer and put it on record. The whole idea was to document document document.

I have a new 2020 Tundra now. Guess what happened the second week of ownership ? TSS sensor light came up. I just deal with it and it eventually goes away and I work around it. The whole point is that it’s not an all or nothing mentality here. I’m very happy with purchase. I love driving it. And if something came up , I address it and so on.

First of all, excellent video. It’s nice and long and very clear. Thanks for sharing that.

As far as the mentioned noise, mine sounds identical. like literally. Actually both of mine sound identical to yours. But I’m curious to find out what second dealer says.

On a side note, I wish I had side steps. And nice colour by the way

My truck only has 450 miles on it, but here's a clip of mine to give you something to compare yours with, hope this helps.

This is cool. We should have the next bunch of guys and gals do the same and post videos of engine bay and around wheel well. Good way to see other rigs lol. Like ten second videos and compare with each other

I had a 2014 that had some odd ticks and knocks. One sounded like the 1st video where the noise cycles off and on. Sounded like an a/c compressor bearing rattling and cycling. Never hurts to get a second opinion. Also don't be afraid to drive it either. I'm not saying to go balls to the wall but I wouldn't baby it either like it's a newborn. Maybe whatever the problem is, it will show itself sooner than later. And I would say where these are high production components in the engine, there is a tolerance that every part is not right in the middle. So there very well could be bigger problems that may reveal down the road.

Both of those are quieter than mine. Mine sounds like a constant lifter tick. And it's really loud at drive throughs because it echos off the wall. I had a 2007 also that was noisy, but my 2017 is actually noisier.

I don't think you have an exhaust leak that I could tell from the video. They sound more like a psssft, pssft sound. I think yours is the common lifter/valve train tick and it is probably louder to you standing there listening to it, than it comes across on the video.

Yeah my 08 with 145k and my 19 with 8k sound identical to that. It bugs me but with a timing chain and all the vvti parts I figured it was normal. Strangely enough my v6 in my FJ sounds the same as well. I think its the thin walled exhaust manifolds amplifying the noise. I put headers on a friends FJ and his went from sounding like mine to a much more muffled sound.

This is as normal of a engine sound you will here all day. Go buy a Prius buddy. You apparently don’t want a V8

    LOL! Another armchair master mechanic.

Mine sounded exactly like that. And they’re replacing the lifters and cam gears under warranty.
    That’s hardly normal ol chap.

Edit: uhh...shit. I thought you were quoting video from post #86, which sounds horrendous & is what mine sounds like. My bad. I’m sorry & I’ll see myself out of this thread now.
