Purchased a 2020 Toyota Tundra Limited which already had the performance exhaust on it when I took it from the dealer. I noticed a light tick/knock that sounded like lifter tick, and it seems to be getting worse. It does NOT go away when the truck is warm. Any thoughts on this? It only has 5,600 miles and I bought it brand new. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth considering how expensive these vehicles are. The dealer inspected this once already and said it's normal, but I know it isn't because i've heard other Tundra engines. My best friend has a 2017 that is virtually silent, does not have this tick/knock. Purchased from Bristol, TN Toyota.

When I pull through drive-throughs I can hear it rattling off the wall beside the truck, and it gets pronounced as the truck approaches 3k rpm. This cannot be "normal"

Mine makes similar noises but not nearly as loud. Hard to tell with the video truly how loud it is though. Try doing an oil change and see what happens?

@ninjajay I had the dealer do the first oil change at 5,000 miles, about 600 miles ago and it did not help. It is noticeable. My friends can notice it. You can hear it from 10 yards away from the truck easily.

Funny, I noticed the valve/ lifter chatter from my 2016 today as I went through a drive through. It's always been there, and many on this forum have commented about this engine being a little noisy. That said, if it's so noisy as to annoy you, I'd be taking it back to the dealer again.

Just drive it and be a proud owner. Worse case, turn the music louder. I rather have that noise than nagging from you know who. I love my wife :)

Ask your friend what oil he uses and change to that with correct level and see if noise persists.

@8MINT8 both trucks are still under the factory warranty and we both have the dealership change the oil. I have to assume it’s the same oil. I really think this truck is a lemon. if my truck makes this noise with only 5,600 miles and another one does not, mine is obviously defective.

    I can’t drive a $50,000 rattle can.

@Hostage81 i can’t take your advice. I can’t let my $50k truck with only 5,600 miles rattle like that and allow Toyota and the dealership to not address this.

Bro all jokes aside , that noise is normal. I watched your video. If something was really wrong, you would know. I had same noise on both my new Tundras.

The noise could be amplified too if you’re against a wall at a drive through. It’s normal. It’s a V8 and parts are moving.

If that’s the case, why is my friend’s 2017 with 20,000 miles not making that noise, and why do thousands of Tundras roll off dealership lots without this noise? But when some of them have this noise, it’s normal? Why doesn’t a Chevy 5.7l make this noise? Why doesn’t the Ram Hemi make this noise? Do you think Toyota’s Valve engineer would classify this as “normal?” I seriously doubt that.

all these trucks make a slight amount of valve noise, but this brand new truck is excessive. I’ve compared it with others. It’s excessive for sure. I’m just going to keep taking it back to the dealership, and also start communicating with Toyota corporate.

They are roller lifters. You are going to hear them. Even my Challenger R/T had it.

why are mine so noticeable while my buddies 2017 are virtually soundless? This is the mystery question.

All I’m saying is, if they roll one off the lot that has almost silent lifters, I want mine to be silent as well. For $50k, I believe that is a reasonable demand.

Listened to your video while sitting in my truck with the sun roof open. I can hear my engine making the same sound. Has for the whopping 5,900 miles on the motor. Maybe your buddy's motor made it when it was younger and now doesn't?

I wouldn't say this classifies the truck as a rattle can, but I know these things can be frustrating.

It bothers you a lot based on posts, tomorrow is Monday, go to the dealer. It's under warranty. The gallery here is not going to fix it to your liking.

Dude it’s not a Tesla or a Hybrid. It’s a V8 Gas engine. They make noise. They sound like a truck, drive like a truck and consume fuel like a truck. Especially during cold winters.

You’re blessed to have a nice truck. Go out and enjoy what you work hard for each and every day. You’re a consumer now, so leave the test drive days behind. You documented the issue with dealer and there is a formal record should anything arise. So you did your do diligence.

There is no evidence here of anything wrong other than negligible noise from under. You don’t eat your lunch there, so stay behind the seat and drive the thing.

lastly, I wouldn’t call it a lemon do to noise from under or a lack thereof. Everything works and you have warranty if it didn’t. My paint starches easy, plastic inside footwell area marks up and TSS comes on sometimes. So what !! Life goes on man. At least I have something that’s bullet proof, excellent resale and does what I want day in and day out. Be a proud owner and keep it moving.

Mine sounds more like a lower end rod knocking. I changed the oil at 1300 miles. It got quieter.

Check the spark plugs and possibly a exhaust manifold leak could give you an extra tick. Maybe get a second opinion from a private mechanic.

    1. That sounds like an exhaust leak.

    2. Oh, as a side note, if it is internal, an oil change wont do a damn thing about it.

    3. How did you not notice that before you bought it?

My 2016 makes this. Noise from time to time. It’s especially loud on cold starts. Even with Amsoil vs mobile one vs Toyota full syn. So I just stick with Amsoil. I do notice that after I put a good long drive on it it’s not near as noticeable vs when I only drive 8 miles to work everyday. But once I go couple hour drive one way and couple back it’s much quieter.

with that being said, do you only drive it short trips? Mine has deff been a lot louder when it was at 5k. I’m at 68k Ish now and it’s not nearly as loud. Also I replaced the factory drain plug with one that has a magnet on the end when I first got the truck.

but deff after 2 hours of highway driving I never hear it in drive through at all.

It sounds to me like someone dogged it out and the timing chain guide tensioner has cracked/broke. I had this happen to my 2010 after I loaned it to a so called friend after his work van broke. It should be under warranty and the dealer should make it right. All it takes is one piece to break off and there is your tick. Oil change will not help the noise. I’m not a mechanic put as new as it is I doubt it’s spark plug or exhaust related. Just my 2cents. Hope you get it fixed because it is not acceptable!

At first I thought exhaust leak, still lean that way, but could also be the injectors.

Noises like this travel, but honestly I would not worry about it. If it gets to you like you say, then take it back to the dealer and express your concern, if they do nothin to your satisfaction, then call Toyota directly.

Hope you get it taken care of to your liking. These are great trucks but they are still mas assembled by humans, who are not prefect.

My 2020 with 1800 miles has made the exact same sounds for the last 3 months. Oil level has been solid the whole time. I heard the same exact sounds in a video from a guy with a 2014 5.7 (it was discussing the auto-LSD functionality and comparing TCS on vs off.)

There's the ticking/tapping which I think is the just the valvetrain. There's probably no solution for that, as it's not really an issue. When you have that many moving parts with cast steels and aluminum alloys, it's going to make noise. Maybe a thicker oil will quiet it down? You could look into used oil analysis for that.

The one thing that's bugged me, but has been most prominent when I listen to other tundras, is the diesel-like knocking sound that seems to come from the exhaust. It's on so many tundras that I'm not worried about it, but I'm just curious what the cause is. Maybe the catalytic converter design? Or is there some valve lift trick that Toyota uses at idle/low load to bring the combustion event to near knock (atkinson vs otto cycle type thing)?

So, as I’ve asked other people who say this isn’t a problem, why doesn’t my friend’s 2017 make this sound so prominently? You can literally not hear any valve noise on his 2017. This isn’t normal. There is no way a valve engineer at Toyota would hear this and say “yep, working optimally”

Didn't read every post here - the first handful. Mine is at Toyota now getting driver's side lifters & cam gears replaced for this problem. Powertrain warranty covered it. Though mine was quite a bit louder than yours & went away after warmup.

I can't remember what variables have been eliminated. What's his mileage? What oil does he use? Brand of gas? etc

Since my truck sounds the same as in your video, I wonder if Toyota changed something for 2019+? Yes it's still a 3UR-FE, but that doesn't mean the tune is identical, or that even some internal components weren't changed. It's very common for internal alloys to change throughout one vehicle or engine's lifecycle.

People are so anal nowadays. If the truck was failing I would be mad. My truck ticks, I just don’t pay attention to it. It otherwise runs fine

Just sounds like you're not gonna be satisfied. Take it back get a refund or get something else based on the lemon law if TN has one? I don't know if this is a normal sound or not but if you're not happy take it back.
