Maybe Whistlindiesel should get a new tundra to torture test. Should make some people mad but also put their minds at ease over the transmission

Yes. That's true. If you're standing in line at "Counter 1".

But, if you're one of those guys that never tows (Counter 2), then information below from Tundra 2019 Warranty and Maintenance Guide indicates that Toyota NEVER recommends changing transmission fluid unless you are operating the truck under "special conditions". They only recommend "inspecting" the transmission for leaks, and having it repaired if you observe any leakage. They never "specify" an ATF change interval UNLESS the truck is operated under their definition of "special operating conditions".

    I'd be curious...

Seemingly Mobil is the engine oil choice for Toyota. I'd be curious if their ATF supplier isnt....XOM as well. Wonder if the WS isnt a variation of 123034.

Now, you are gazing down at the entrance to the "Rabbit Hole".

There is currently a Mobil ATF WS product, but it is sold in Thailand, and apparently not in the US. I have seen some evidence (PDS, MDS) on the internet that Mobil has previously supplied Toyota with ATF WS, but I couldn't find it again. Is that Mobil Thailand product the same as Toyota Genuine ATF WS? You would have to be an "insider" to know.

    https://www.mobil.com/en-th/passenger-vehicle-lube/pds/ap-xx-mobil-atf-ws

Curious about the genesis of Toyota ATF WS?...Here is one entrance to the "Rabbit Hole":

    https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/toyota-ws-my-eyes-hurt-from-reading.160719/

Among other interesting threads listed in the "related" section at the end was (1) A thread revealing the Aisin ATF WS is NOT the same as Toyota Genuine ATF WS, and (2) A poll of what owners had used INSTEAD of Toyota Genuine ATF WS:

I contacted Mobil about WS fluid.

I think they may be an importer of Ws or a bottling supplier of some type.

they flat told me they don’t make ws fluid.

( this is my main technical contact through my work where I deal with lube oils)

Will you please give us some details concerning the 2 transmissions that were destroyed? Lots of heavy towing? No towing? Was there a trans cooler present? Any reason to think excess heat was the culprit? Mods? I’m genuinely curious.

I had a SC and TRD exhaust at the time. I also had a 4000# TT that I towed maybe once every 1-2 months. I would get on it sometimes, but not every time I drove it. It had the trans cooler in the condenser. Towing my TT it would creep up to 230s after an hour or more. The atf needle would move around 240 and the overheat light in that truck came on in the 250s.

I think the second went out cause they left the rest of the system in place, including all the metal shavings in the cooler. It was also a refurbished and never felt like it shifted right.

Here’s the carfax on it. 2 transmission replaced, 2 times that I went in because the refurbished one was having issues and seemed like it was also going out, and once after they replaced it where they flushed it because it was acting up.

When it started going out, it was holding gears, hesitating when shifting from park, wouldn’t go in reverse sometimes. It would get better when warmed up. The refurbished one always ran hotter than the first one. At the end it was holding gears and wouldn’t shift in to OD. I traded the truck in at 94k cause it was only a matter of time before it went out, even though the dealer said everything was good. Then it went out about 10k later.

One good thing is I was in MO when it started having issues. I still pulled a 3000# uhaul to TX and it made it.

There’s also a lot of undocumented times I went to ask them about it. I know I went in more than twice.

I hope Dick Poe was his name and not an indicator of his financial status. I had good experiences with their service dept.

Priority were the ones telling me everything was good. I actually traded it in at Ourisman. I never did any service there myself but had a decent experience buying from them. They did the 2nd transmission replacement right after I traded it in.

Pulled @ 7800 lbs 200 miles from the Adirondack mountains to CT. Not extreme as far long mountainous uphills, but there are stretches where it is a long long grade. Temp was between 30° & 37°, transmission temps stayed between 169° & 188°. I was in T/H and started in S4 and switched from 4 to 5 to 4 and then finally just threw it into D and hammer down. 12.0 mpg for the trip, I'm happy to have the cooler. :burnrubber:

I put a cooler on my 2021 and out of curiosity I reach in between the grill and feel the inlet and outlet connections on the cooler at times. Pulling nothing, around town driving. 95% of time the inlet is hot indicating the thermostat is opening allowing fluid to circulate. Only time it wasn't was when it was 38F in the morning and raining. So live in Alasaka you may not want cooler.....

According to this diagram, the inlet to the cooler is always open. It’s the return line that stays close until it needs to open, letting fluid flow through the cooler. I’m not sure if the atf is hot enough to reach the cooler if the loop is closed though.

The inlet is HOT like uncomfortable to touch and the return is warm. The one time I found the inlet cold both sides were cold.

If the transmission fluid has not gotten hot enough to open thermostat return flow from the cooler, fluid in the supply line and the cooler would likely be at ambient temperature until the transmission fluid temp gets hot enough to open the thermostat. Heat would not likely conduct up the fluid supply line until the thermostat opens, since conduction is molecule to molecule.

Once the thermostat opens, fluid in the supply line would be close to the thermostat opening temp, say 220 degrees (WAG), and cooling as the fluid from the transmission is cooled. Returning fluid to the transmission would be cooled considerably, maybe 50 degrees, until the pan temp/torque converter outlet temp drops to the thermostat closing temp. Fluid in the supply line would then remain at about the thermostat closing temp, but be cooled by heat rejection to the ambient air. The fluid charge trapped in the cooler would be sub-cooled until the cycle repeated itself.

Disappointed in my new cooler today. Picked up my boat in Georgetown and driving back to Mt Pleasant. Four lane road, cannot get any flatter. 57F outside.
    Pan temps still averaging 210F.
