Just drove home and the trans got up to 194 and was going back and forth between 194 and 192. Felt the lines and the lower line going in to the cooler was hot. Top line wasn’t as hot so it wasn’t engine heat. So the thermostat opens somewhere less than 194f, I’d guess right around 194f.

So for the 19/20’s the window sticker says it has trans cooler but it’s not actually on the truck?!!

    Wow that’s crazy that’s a rip-off!

All this talk about temps people are comfortable with, anyone heard of a heat related failure?

I just got in the early 2nd gen atf thermo plate and am still waiting for the hard lines that route past the motor. Still trying to decide on doing it now and probably affecting my drivetrain warranty or waiting.

I have an 08 and the coolant heater/cooler is exactly the same, so I think it is very likely that the atf plate will work.

Thinking of doing the same. Hoping Toyota will come out with a TSB for people that tow and have experienced high coolant temps. My 19 is a 4x4 it has a heat shield for front driveshaft. The coolant lines that run to trans are not even shielded from exhaust.

So you believe the transmission fluid can't handle the temps? What spec are you using to judge this?

I thought the 19s didn't have coolant lines running to the transmission? I know everyone is talking about this now but it seems a little contrived to me. Just trying to understand.

The diagram and part numbers in the video are the same for all Tundras with a cooler since 07.

19 has coolant lines running to trans. No trans lines running to external cooler. Just seems crazy after all these years of production that Toyota would decide a external cooler is not needed. The only think that changed was the Freon.

I've been research it and there have always been coolant lines running to the Gen3. They run down the back/top side of the transmission. I'll post a pick from the 2015 manual.

The question I have is if the external "radiator" is really gone.

Its called "Air Cooled Transmission Oil Cooler" in the service manual.

Do you have a 19? Go out and check for yourself. Why are you questioning owners of 19s that can physically crawl under their truck and compare it to earlier trucks? As I have said before in my driveway is an 08 and a 19. 19 does not have any atf lines. There is no external cooler, either standalone, bottom of the rad or in the condensor.

Here is a pic of my 19 and then 08. The atf fluid thermo was not installed.

Because you don't know what you're looking at. Do you have an 18 to compare it to?

When the air cooler is installed the fluid runs forward down the passenger side to the air cooler.

When it is not, the same "COOLER ASSY" runs up the back of the transmission to the radiator. That is what you don't understand. That is how it has been for a long time.

Which is why I said what I said.

There are bunch of people running around complaining when they don't fully understand what they're talking about.

    Why?

Here is a screen grab from the 2015 manual showing the same assembly routing to the radiator.

I'm curious as to what kind of explanations you're looking to receive?

This what I've seen so far.

    1. Complaints that transmission fluid temps are running 15 to 30 degrees higher than what others have seen in previous models.

To which I would ask, what spec are you using to determine optimal temperature of Toyota WS fluid?

    2. No extra air cooler = bad

This isn't necessarily true. The existing air cooler on previous Gens practically blocked the radiator. I have always thought the Tundra needed an electric fan to cool better and the ATM air cooler doesn't help. There have been a few in the past that created electric fan mods. Most are not around anymore.

I do know that a good radiator with a good ATM internal cooling system works well.

Just curious as to what they did since it’s on the sticker and not on the truck

I do agree with you here. They shouldn't list it the same if the air cooler is not there.

I suspect they are considering the radiator cooling to qualify but that is a little deceptive to me. The existing transmission without towing package probably have close the same system.

I suppose there is a chance the system/radiator is larger or has more capacity with the tow package. I would like to know myself. Which why I started looking at it. I've considered a Army Green 2020 but would like to know before I buy.

The transmission shows to be the same part# for a 4x4 AB60F for 2019 as previous models. I can't seem to find anything on the air cooler part.

My BIL has a ‘19 and I have an ‘18.

We did park side by side and you can tell immediately looking through the grill that there is missing hardware and lines.

However, we both have a lot of trust in the Toyota engineers. He just got worried because he tows his Wake Setter all over hell. I pull the occasional landscaping trailer...

I'm wondering if some got away from the factory without it. If that is what has happened, Toyota needs to make it right for sure.
