Platinum /JBL owner here. Yup, what a joke the "upgrade" is. And I'm sure I'm stating the obvious but the problem is the whole system is tied together, so replacing a component here and there is worthless. I'm waiting to hear some feedback on the OEMPlus plug and play. The TacoTunes system addresses the shortfalls properly but looks like a hassle to install.

Anyone ditch the whole system and regret loosing the vehicle controls/options in the head unit?

Bought the first pieces today for the redo. Keeping the head unit. Everything else is going.

Last thing I would want to do is replacing my head unit, there are just to many features embedded I would loose. Besides that I like the way it looks and really have no complaints about it.

What are the components of the set up you are going to use?

Agreed, that's what makes the JBL so frustrating to try and correct.

You spent some serious money, probably plenty good to enter contests and to rattle your teeth.

Not competition level but if I was going to redo everything I figured I should make it good.

So, since I started this thread 10 days ago I have been listening to fellow forum members, did more internet research than I really cared for and contacted several suppliers. I also had to keep my budget in mind or what I am willing to spend to improve my current system. I just want nice clear sound, subs I can actually hear and feel and the ability to at times listen to the music louder then what the current system allows.

Today being Black Friday seemed like the best day to make a purchase so I finally pulled the trigger:

Two sets of Hertz 6.5 component speaker sets (front/rear doors)
    Two Hertz 12" sub woofers
Custom build sub enclosure (behind rear seat)
    JBL Club 5-channel amplifier
JL Audio Fix 86 and DRC 200
Amp mounting rack, all wiring, adapters and hardware

I can keep my head unit and don't have to cut/splice any OEM wiring or plugs (except for the tweeters in the rear doors). Once I get all the stuff I just have to find the time to install everything.

Seems like everyone is upgrading! I just couldn’t keep the factory head unit...that thing sucks.....went with a kenwood nav unit with the maestro module to keep all the steering wheel controls and factory deck options.

Well, looks like you upgraded too. What did you do about the JBL amp and speakers or didn't your truck come with JBL stereo?

They are nice speakers. I was listening to a bunch at my price point and they where the best I thought.

You doing your install? I’ve installed stereos before but I think I’m going to have this one done. Setting the processor is seems like it’s best set up by someone with all the right tools.

If you get rid of the head unit you don’t have to worry about normalizing anything.

I will install it myself. Installing speakers, running wiring, mounting am and sub woofer should be straight forward. I asked about the signal JL Audio Fix 86 and it comes with tuning CD. There are videos that show how to do it using a multi meter.

To get everything installed would probably run 500.00 or better because you basically have to take most of the interior apart. Doing it yourself you also know that there are no shortcuts taken running all the wiring neat and properly. I am pretty anal about that kind of stuff, I also don't want any smudges or finger prints all over my truck.

Been watching this thread. Interesting. I put a JL Sub in about a year ago. The sound is still not good enough for my sports talk radio...lol. I'm old enough I don't need it to be loud but, like the sound crisp clean...and loud should I want some Stones or AC/DC!

I am old too and usually don't listen to real loud music, problem with the JBL stock stereo is that it sounds like crap when played at a normal level; it just sounds flat and shallow. I was going just the speaker and amplified sub woofer at first but decided to a few hundred more and get everything new past the head unit which I like and want to keep.

Hopefully what I bought will fit the bill.

I still like decent audio...will add the JL CS65o series?in the doors with a JX400 amp to drive them!

If I stopped drinking Crown Royal, wine and the beer I keep for the dog and neighbors/visitors, I could afford a high end system!!!

Do you already have a processor like the JBL fix? if not you need one of those also or you will just be amplifying the bad signal
