Damn, that was fast! My Condolences, hopefully the damage is only limited to the piston...maybe rings or ringlands and the block/crank are still good. Was this still 5.5PSI? Was it tuned for the SC, or still running stock tune?

 

It has a basic SC tune, I need to get logs to the tuner.

The BMW world consensus is the issue is a valve or valve stem seal.

 

Fingers crossed it's just a seal and you can do it with the head on.

 

Another oddity, no blue smoke until temp is at 1/4.

Here are the plugs. (in for under 300 miles).

 

Just began trying to do the leak down test yesterday & my 12 year old compressor died.

Picked this up today.

Well shit, that sucks man...what was the diagnosis of the leak down? Rings?

 

Starts off awful and drops in real time. Oddly it has excellent power but smokes worse than James Bonds car in Goldfinger

 

Damn! Are you gonna rebuild? Can you get a used motor reasonably priced??

 

If it is rebuildable I'll rebuild. I have been offered a 99 328 motor, only difference is iron vs mine is an aluminum block.

Are the bores scratched? Are those pictures all from the same cylinder? Hard to tell what I'm looking at here, but I've never been good with borescopes. The cross hatch still looks good, no excessive wear that I can see, maybe you got lucky and damage is minimal. If the block, head and crank can be saved, get forged pistons/rods, new bearings, ARP head studs and a quality MLS head gasket. That'll do you for some better boost times!

Source: I had my ring lands break on piston #4 on my Tacoma and got lucky, only needed a hone and I rebuilt with forged components in my garage.

 

Want to keep the balance, so no big motor.

Its different cylinders, and bores look ok to me. I'll know once it is out & apart.

With the SC I have more than enough power, I just want a reliable "economical" easy solution, the first choice is simple head work, second bottom end rebuild & valve stem seals/head refresh & finally a good other M52.

I hope to have it out tomorrow, busy yesterday & today.

The clutch, flywheel & pressure plate look very good. I'll be getting a new clutch & pressureplate.

Except the Viktor R (they are crap) gasket I see no issues.

 

Looks clean to me...was there anything noticeably wrong with the head gasket? Did you find anything with the cylinder head?

 

Here are a few more, WD 40 in the head to see if it's not sealed.

 

#5 is not alive. I expected 1&2 to be empty with all the bubbles but no...

 

That narrows it down, good work! I was thinking it was something in the head with as clean as the pistons and cylinders looked. Hopefully it is/was the valve seal...and you can focus on the "while you're in there" opportunities

 

Mystery solved. Piston #3 has a crack.

Looking for M54B30 pistons, rods & a crank, going 3 litre stroker.

 

That'll do it! Nice job finding that cracked ring land, can you pick it out? I had the exact same issue on my Tacoma, good excuse for an engine build, considering it could have been much worse.

 

Builder said he will sell me an S52 which is 3.2 liter for about 1800 more than the 3.0 stroker.

 

I paid a down payment on the fully rebuilt S52 last night, should have it in 2 weeks.
