I know there is a recall on toyota frames but not 100% on what trucks and what make each truck part of the recall. My Dad has a 2006 tundra frame is getting pretty rough not sure what to do. Asked 1 of the local dealers and was told not part of recall. What would be good plan of action? Also has anyone dealt with this issue of bad frame and not covered under recall thanks

I would go drop it off at that dealer and let them replace it if thats what they said. I wouldn't be driving that truck with the frame looking like that.

There isn't much you can do now. That frame is toast and unsafe.

You'll have to look up the specifics, but I thought the recall covered 2000 - 2003. Then a later one covered some early 2nd Gens. So maybe the '04 - '06 aren't covered... I don't know? I've read on this forum that some dealers seem to be more liberal than others in assessing the need for frame replacement.

Looks like you're located in Massachusetts. I live a couple hours north near Portland, Maine. When I was at Berlin City Toyota Lexus in Portland last summer, they had 40 (Yes... 40!) new frames stacked like chord wood behind the dealership. I don't know which were Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia... but judging by their frames in stock, I'd say they're doing some frame replacements. May be worth a call to them to see what's up.

Good luck, and keep us posted with any updates.

Man, that's a shame that frame looks so bad on a truck that clean. I would send those pictures (both of the body and truck) to Toyota corporate and see what they say...can't hurt.

Whatever the case is, the frame has holes near the transmission crossmember and I can see the transmission falling out at any point while driving it. I would stop driving the truck immediately.

Unpopular opinion warning. I really think a lot of damage could be avoided in the north if people would apply fluid film or similar at least twice a year. There are video's on Youtube showing the results before and after a winter season. Damn shame the body is in such good shape on this truck and the frame is gone.

Wow that’s too bad, I would definitely take a lot of pictures of the truck itself and all the frame rot and send it into Toyota with a letter explaining sentimental value of the pickup and see if they can do something for you.

Remove the spare and look at the rear cross member that's right above it. It's my understanding that a failure at that location is what triggers a full-frame-replacement.

I agree with @Scuba ... I would not drive that on the road.

Only on 00-03 trucks, 04-06 trucks are only eligible through the now expired service campaign.

Judging by the looks of the outside of the OPs truck, if ever there was a candidate for a DYI frame swap, this would appear to be it...

Called dealer with vin, being told that truck doesnt have a active recall or anything on it. Little frustrated at this point, i said "i am assed out on a mint truck with a bad frame?"

Lady on the phone told me
" you can bring it in and have it inspected by a certified toyota dealer tech and if it is rusted in same spots as the ones that are part of recall and they can supply us with a certified letter and contact toyota for support and see if they will help."

Also thank you to all who replied. Lot of good/helpful responses. Truck has less miles on it than my 2010 RW has on it.

It's a little unclear the way this is written. Who said what in the above statements?

I would drive it right over there and drop it off to the dealer that said that...be prepared to not get it back for awhile. I'm guessing if there is any truck out there at this point in time Toyota would do something for even though it's not part of the recall/service campaign yours would be it. Hell, if you have AAA and get a free tow, I would have it towed there, and tell them you are scared to drive it as is...just for effect if nothing else. Good luck...

They also said the inspection is $79.95, cheap price to pay IF they do decide to replace it.

Was that the local dealer or the one in Maine?
I’d also like to know if they’ve ever had a customer who has been successful in pursuing a similar issue in this way.

My Dad went to 1 dealerships today was told they cant do anything for him other than inspection and hope toyota does something to help him. Not sure what his direction is with it at this point. I know he doesnt want to replace frame himself and i know he doesn't want to part it out. Had a local shop look at it before going to dealer, front crush portion of frame is non existent and steering rack rusting off

Make a big sign that would sit in the bed that says “My truck is totaled because of a Toyota design flaw and they won’t fix it” and park the truck in front of the dealership.

I know this is an old thread but wondering what ended up happening? Did Toyota corp help at all or did you have to part it out?
