I think if your truck hasn't had the timing belt changed at least once already, you're a fool for driving it.

Would you trust your truck on 19 year old tires? The timing belt is made out of similar rubber, without the steel belts for reinforcement. Knowing you can brick your engine if that belt ever snaps, that's the first thing I've be worried about over any clicking sounds.

Reports of ticking sounds inside the 4.7L engine are pretty common. The real killers of these trucks, other than running them low on fluids, are the timing belt/water pump/pulleys/tensioner (Aisin makes an OEM-equiv kit for this), old radiators, and non-OEM lower ball joints. As long as you maintain all three on a normal schedule, using OEM parts, that truck should last a long ass time.

    Mamba,
That was good information, although a bit disheartening.
If you are still on line... should I just keep driving it and work on clearing out the potential sludge, etc? Any suggestions on how to preemptively clean out, and avoid, the problems from the low miles? Or... is this a "if it's not broken don't fix it" situation?

Read replies #1 and #2. That's our collective knowledge. It covers all this stuff. I feel like. It's the "megathread" he's referring to: https://www.tundras.com/threads/so-you-wanna-buy-just-bought-a-1st-gen-tundra-eh.115928/
