Good news: after reading closely, I think we do NOT need to buy adventure passes for this meet-and-play UNLESS you're thinking of camping. BUT if we want to gather around a picnic table or use bathrooms (haven't figured out yet if there are any bathrooms), we'd need passes. I'm sharing this because, if there's anyone that wants to come but $20 will cause you to opt out, seems like you can come along... but may have to park in some obscure place and jog back to meet if the majority buy passes. What I read:

"As of September 2016, forest visitors parked in standard amenity recreation fee sites in the four southern California national forests must display a valid recreation pass. This includes sites on the Angeles, Cleveland, Los Padres and San Bernardino National Forests.

As listed in the “Recreation Enhancement Act,” standard amenity fee sites are those that provide designated developed parking, picnic tables, toilet facilities, security, interpretive signs and trash receptacles. ... Visitors do not have to display a valid recreation pass if they park outside these sites."

Here's how/ where to buy an adventure pass if you want one:

    https://www.fs.usda.gov/detailfull/r5/passes-permits/recreation/?cid=stelprdb5181410

But, wait! You may qualify for a FREE America the Beautiful pass if you're:

    - active military (requires CAC card or DD form 1173)

    - permanently disabled (% of disability doesn't matter, so might include hearing loss during military service, etc; age doesn't matter... so a disabled child may get a pass, and be accompanied by 3 adults + other kids in the same vehicle)

    - a 4th grader (as above, can be accompanied)

I'll leave it to you to do the research I did, but possibly several among us may qualify.

Ps: zero toilets or amenities on Bee Canyon.

There are rangers that patrol the area, however I've only seen them once in the afternoon before sunset. I've never ran into trouble with friends not having a pass, BUT there is that chance.

@Marty McFly, based on my discovery that I'll get enough use out of an America the Beautiful pass this year to justify buying one, I think I'm gonna bail on being your purchase partner for an Adventure Pass. @nishibot was looking for a partner though, and with that easy purchase point locator, can you let me out of this commitment... and remain my Tundras.com BFF?:rolleyes:

After reading the wording, I interpret passes are only needed where there are amenities. Oooh, I wonder if amenities includes rangers...? That and a picnic table...?

@Sunnier I could be mistaken but I think Grand Canyon is $30 to get in, but good for 7 days so depending on other places you go to. You will be better off getting the America pass

I'm pleased we've got several in the "older group" as well as several in the <4 crowd. The 7 and 6 y.o.'s can hang together or boss the little guys or shadow the older kids. I think it's cool there should be enough kids on this trip for them to feel like they are equal participants.

So do we need this pass? And is it per vehicle or per driver and passenger?

Yep, Grand Canyon is $30 and good for one week, but I didn't realize that week could include other nat'l parks... do you know that for sure?? If so... I could just get the Grand Canyon Pass and a local Adventure pass after that, when I need it, for less than $80.

    Do you know, @nishibot ?

Anyway, in part due to my great marital friend communication, @Marty McFly's already kicked me to the curb.

I say NO, we do not need this pass. Read the excerpt in post #122. I plan to exercise confidence and not buy one for this trip.

Others are taking no risks and getting passes. You guys that do can share the one picnic table, if you find one. If I called it wrong, to avoid a ticket, I'll park elsewhere and eat in my truck, while watching you party through binoculars and making snide comments by radio.

I did go to my local Big 5 who told me 2 passes may be purchased together for $40 $30 + $5 = $35 total. It doesn't matter when during the month you get them because they'll be paper-punched at point-of-purchase to indicate what month you bought it, then it will be good til the end of the same month next year.

Tip: since there's no benefit in waiting a week, if you're going to get one for this trip, get it sooner than later. The Big 5 I visisted had one-day passes and the $30 annual pass, but none of the $5 annual second passes. They said they get them on Fridays (at that store), but no guarantee they'll get more this Friday. So maybe don't leave it til the last minute.

Both. You buy a pass and it hangs on a car hanger from your rear view (which means you can move it from one vehicle to another, which I may need to do. If you have a Jeep or a motorcycle, you can get a stick-on decal). It's good for everyone in a vehicle with the pass holder. Some parks charge per person instead of per vehicle; at those parks, one pass allows entry for the pass holder + 3 adults. Kids under 16 are always free. See above.

I know it's a pain reading all the posts in here, but that'll cover most questions. Or there's links to all the sites I researched for the info, so you can read what I did and interpret it yourself. This includes lists of all the places you can use each pass. And all the places you can buy passes.

Nope. I did that well-chronicled woman thing of telling you to go ahead without me, and even suggesting another partner for you to go with, then griping when you immediately took me at my word and moved on. :angrygirl:

Hahaha! All for comic effect. I really am going to NOT buy a pass before this trip. I don't want to decide for the rest of you, but I read the rules and interpret that we don't need one for Bee Canyon and, since I'll need a pass for my Arizona road trip this spring, I plan to get an America the Beautiful pass, but not yet. I'll get it closer to the start of that trip, or if we do another local trip at a place with "amenities".

@nishibot, if you would rather still get a pass I can still go halfs with you since I already offered. If not I'm not that worried about the adventure pass. I'm intrigued by this multi park pass but maybe later down the line :typing:

I personally do not think a pass is needed. The route is about 3hrs or so even with stops. Fairly easy route and there should not be too many hang ups. I did this route when I moved from San Diego to Murrieta in my FJ after the rain and had no problems. Just go slow and be safe.
