I'll eventually swap out all this chrome.
I think it's time we get our off-pavement on again! Let's meet up Sunday 2/25/18 at 10:00 am in the parking lot at 43396 CA-74, Hemet, CA 92544, which has a grocery store, gas station, and fast food, for any last-minute requirements.
    IMG_3539.jpg

When we're ready, we'll conga over to the trail head, just under 5 miles east near 47810 Bee Canyon Truck Trail, Hemet, CA 92544, which is off the State Highway 74.

We'll drive the Bee Canyon to Pine Cove Road route, rated as easy for high-clearance 2WD and 4WD's, and end up near the Pine Cove Market in Idyllwild, CA (23235 Banning-Idyllwild Panoramic Hwy, Idyllwild-Pine Cove, CA 92549).

Anyone who needs to call it quits, can reprovision here and head home. For anyone who'd like to grab a bite with the SoCal Tundra team, there're several sit-down food options in Idyllwild.

Idyllwild Pizza Co. seems like a good choice, what with all the kids expected on this one: Strawberry Valley Center, 54391 Village Center Dr, Idyllwild, CA 92549. If anyone wants to suggest another option, do it and we'll vote.

This first post will be updated with relavent info for this meet-and-play, so you don't have to read the entire thread.

There's a creek/ waterfall along the route. Some have described it is possible to stop near the water for a social break (or for kids to get out of the truck a while). Others have suggested waiting to stop about 3/4 of the way, after a water crossing, because there's more room to park.

    Stuff to plan for are:

    - Bees (in one area of the route, there are enough to get the place named for themselves);

    - A few switch-back turns and what will seem (from a Tundra perspective) to be some pretty narrow stretches. Haha! :angrygirl:<scoffs>

    - Possibly a few risky drivers traveling fast in the opposite direction.

By all accounts, we'll encounter rocky bits, rutted bits, and fine sandy bits, but no majorly steep outward inclines in combination with loose ground near the shelf edges-- so as long as we leave a bit of gap between the first and second vehicle (to react to anybody coming fast from the opposite direction, and relay the info by radio), we should have plenty of room to maneuver.

Caveat: this'd probably not be a good route to do in the rain, or the day after, because the road is described to get very slick.

I've read through recent reviews (they'll be linked below), and at least one guy in a full-sized truck did this route, but commented that it seemed narrow for a truck that size. He also said he'll do it again. :curls:

Mike @eccracer104 travelled this route recently and suggested we will need to go slow through a few places to avoid (minimize?) pin-striping, but expressed certainty this route is very doable in a Tundra.

I'll bring Cyndi (loppers) so, if we encounter anything threatening the beauty of your Tundras, we can do a little trail customization....

The info posted online for this route indicates an 'adventure pass' is required and that rangers patrol the area and check compliance. I've copied in Mike's good info on this:

@Marty McFly and I have agreed to partner up on a pair of passes. On my days off later this week, I'll go to Big 5 and report out.

Is this a beginner trail and not ment for stock tundras? Sounds like damage might be a possibility with the trucks?

I have to admit I am a little worried about getting big pin stripes, but want to have fun none the less. Hell may be my first and last trip but got to give it a try.

No worries Steve. Just be cautious around the bushes and you'll be fine. Once you get out in the dirt it will not be your last time

Tundras with some dirt on it looks good. I still haven't washed my truck since Anza

Hi, Guys! Sorry for the late response.

This route is okay for any vehicle with "high clearance". It is 2WD approved, unless it rains the night before, so you may not even find need to engage your 4x4. But it's dirt, so it's an opportunity to do it if you want. Also, there are trails leading off to the left (we'll stay right) that could present more challenges; this seems like a great opportunity for everyone to do an easy trail, while scouting out others you/ we might try in the future. There's a shooting range in the area we'll start, so we can see what that's about too, for future. All about options.

I haven't found anything we should worry about with this run. However, since many of us have brand new, stock Tundras (or really well-babied new paint), I wanted to list every possible concern anyone might have. So, that may include bees; drivers coming fast the other way; or slick mud during or immediately after rain.

I didn't read anything about pinstriping but, since Mike's done this route recently and mentioned it (I copied his post from the SoCal B.S. thread over to this thread), of course I listed it. Maybe Mike will chime in over here; I'm guessing he mentioned it because he knows I was bummed about some very minor pinstriping I got on our last run. Which, by the way, was erased by an exterior detail. Bless him for tolerating our 'brand new truck' paradigm!

I carried loppers at the last meet-and-play but that group was huge so I didn't want to slow us down, stopping to trim heavy brush at the water crossing. This time, I assure you, I will call out any possible obstruction and be willing to stop to address it if needed... whatever anyone needs. :amen:

That moment in the thread when the real 4x4'ers bail out. Ha! :crapstorm:

Full disclosure: I did buy a 4 Runner and this will be her maiden voyage. I want to make sure I'm somewhere that doesn't need 4x4 the first time I lead (my Tundra is 2WD) and, I'll admit, I saw a couple benefits that day Mike lead us in his Taco... in this case, it's that I can scout out width for passing oncoming vehicles as we approach switchback turns.

If anyone was to throw some gauntlet (I'm high-challenge!) I could probably be enticed to drive the BFT (Tundra). :fistbump:

But I'd like to bring the 4R to check that out. And, of course, because I think that'd allow easy scouting.

@Sunnier this is your trip so run what you want. I am sure no one will complain what you drive, at least I will not. Yes I'm worried about pin stripes but that is not going to stop me. I can always fix later if need be. Watched a couple of videos on YouTube with a Subaru Forrester going all the way up to Idlewild, so a stock Tundra should be ok.

I watched this and yes, I could see some minor pinstriping to the right side of a Tundra. Anyone who wants to show up early with a roll of heavy butcher paper and masking tape, I'd be happy to help wrap the side of your truck(s). Seriously, that's what I thought of doing last time and still think it's a fine idea. We want to use our trucks in all possible ways... AND keep 'em pavement perfect. Mmm, cake!

I need to get my truck out so I might joining. But holy hell... don't be afraid to get some pinstripes on your paint people. If you want to keep your truck pristine keep it on pavement. And honestly it's only the first scratch that hurts!
