19 Tundra under 10k miles burning oil

I chewed thru almost 1.5 qts. towing around 2,500lbs for a few hundred miles. It was the 45 mph head-wind the entire way and cruise set at 83 mph as I charged into a wicked cold front. won’t be doing that again. did a ton of research while I was freaking out about everything. Yes, Toyota (Corporate) considers 2 qts. between changes as “normal”. I verified. 80k on mine and doesn’t leak a drip.

 

2 qts between changes isn't normal but it's Toyotas way of dealing with it. All auto dealers would say the same.
A new engine could use more though, at least that's what they used to say with seals etc consuming some but not sure if it's still that way.

 

So 0.75 Qts in 10k miles on a brand new engine? I wouldn't worry just yet.

 

My understanding is modern engines have closer tolerances and theoretically should use less oil during break in. I know in the old days it would take a while before rings seated leading to some oil consumption when new. I have also heard that engines go through a break in process at the factory.

 

In order for a cam tower leak to show up on the dipstick there would be a prety good size puddle under the truck.

Just happened to a local member in AZ so figured I'd ask.......

 

Hey guys I really appreciate the feedback, I'm going to note the level on dipstick after next oil change. I should mention that I do average 70 to 85mph on the way to work. After reading all the comments I really shouldn't worry just yet, maybe just watch for leaks and oil levels consistently. But, on the other hand that was the reason I bought a brand new truck, all good gonna hope for the best.

 

If you're really averaging at 85mph, maybe 10k is too long an interval. Just an opinion.
