Hey, I just bought my truck Sept 30 brand new, I've got close a 100mile commute on highway for the jobsite I'm on. I had to add 3/4 quart before 1st oil change. Drove to St Lousi Missouri from chi roughly 1200 mile had to add half a quart already. I went to dealer I went to service Manager he said its normal for it to burn"or diccipate up to 2 quarts" in a oil change interval. It's my first new car I've ever bought, I thought this was a good buy is this normal or not? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated

That service manager is full of it. Some oil usage in a new engine can be normal, but not that much. Oil level is one of the things you have to watch on a 5.7. If they run low they can coke up, and then it's a snowball effect. Source -> https://www.motorreviewer.com/engine.php?engine_id=108

    Tundras don't burn oil.

If it was an Audi, BMW or Subaru then maybe! The service manager must have transferred from one the above.

Everything will wear enough to burn oil eventually.

Most of my new vehicles don't burn any until over 100k, some like my 3rd gen 4runner didn't until over 275k.

The manual does say it is "allowable" to burn up to 1 quart per 1000 miles, so the OPs burn rate is within "standard", yet I would be oh so upset if my under 10K mile motor was already burning oil, what will it be like at 100k or 250??? Not a good sign no matter what. Yet not much legally can be done about it, so ask very, very nicely and just maybe they'll do something about it. Luck and enjoy.

You need to get that documented with Toyota ASAP, I'd say, so it's on the record that you are having this problem at this time. Keep running it up the chain to the next level. I've never done that with Toyota, but people here know the process.

I think people are missing the fact that he only mentioned that the dealer said they can burn “up to 2 quarts”. He’s burned 3/4 of a quart within the oil change interval. While it is using some, most manufactures are going to consider that normal, and not do anything about it. If it was 2 quarts, I’d be pissed.

OP, make sure you’re checking it in the same manner every time. That way it’s consistent. Usually a warm truck that has sat for five minutes, then check. I have to add a splash of oil between my oil change intervals. In 5000 miles I’ve probably added a 1/4 to 3/8 of a quart. Some oil is going to get used through the PCV system.

When my truck was new, I think I added over a half a quart through the oil change interval. Now that I’m at 30 K, it seems to be much less. I changed my oil a few months ago and check it every month. I haven’t added a drop in the last 2000 miles.

    I agree with this.
A new engine with rings that aren't broken in can burn at a faster rate.
I would be more concerned with how the truck was used after driving it off the lot. I wouldn't buy it and then drive 100 miles highway/ day until after it's broken in. Engine break in procedure is a real thing and driving extended milage at highway speed/ consistent RPMS isn't exactly a good thing.

Does the manual mention proper break in procedure. I read my 17 but cant remember other than don't tow for the first 500 miles. Curious because I'm considering trading for a 20.

I had one of the famous Ford 5.4s. It used a quart every 1000 - 2000 miles from day one. Ford said is was within the acceptable range. Specs were for 5-20 syn blend but I found that running 10-30 it used less. I change oil in my Tundra every 10k. Last change it was in the middle of the stick with no additional oil added.

I can’t remember exactly either, but something about not towing or sustaining a consistent RPM for extended periods of time. No hard acceleration or braking.

Burning oil was normal for my GMC not for my Tundra. I have a 2019 Tundra and I was pleased to find that it used no oil between oil changes.

Your service manager claims it's normal to burn 25% of your engine oil between changes in a brand new truck? I'd let Toyota know they have dealers telling people that. Unbelievable.

My 2006 350Z had oil control ring issues and used 3 quarts between oil changes. At 18k they replaced the motor with an identical defective motor & gave it a 12k/12month warranty when it happened again at 36k they said we'll give you free oil changes.

    I'll never own another Nissan.

Call corporate, create a case, make them document the use & prove it is ok.

    Good luck.
