Going to 16” wheel from a 17” wheel

Morning everyone,

My truck came with upgraded 17” from the factory. Before ordering new tires, I was curious how many people go from a 17” to a 16” to achieve more tire and side wall?

My truck has a 6 Bolt pattern and if I could find TRD Offroad wheels from a newer Tacoma that match hub size and bolt pattern, I’d go that route or At least start searching 16” Toyota wheels that bolt right up.

curious how many people have reduced wheel size, and what wheels did you end up with.

Go down to “Wheels, Tires and Suspension,” then find or Ctrl + F the Wheel fitment section. Lists other OEM Toyota wheels that fit our trucks, dimensions to consider, etc.

 

OP if you post your location you’ll likely find someone wanting to swap their OEM 16” wheels for YOUR 17”s if you’re looking to stay OEM.

 

I got 17s for summer tires but kept my original 16s for snow tires with more sidewall.

Careful of the Tacoma wheels, lots of them have a narrower offset. Tundra wheels are ET15 while Tacoma are often ET30.

My truck came stock with 17s and I switched to 16s on a 33" tire for more sidewall. Sometimes I wish I had stuck with 17s for bigger brake options, but overall I am very happy with the way 16s look and ride. I'm running 16x8 Methods with 0 offset.

At this point I'd only run 17s on a 34-35" tire, but fitting that size tire properly is another can of worms.

 

I also went to 16” wheels for more tire and to lighten the overall weight of my wheel/tire combo when moving to 33s. I’m happy with it but my only gripe is that tires for 16” wheels are less and less common and with fewer options than they used to be.

 

Yep, think that's the biggest downfall, most new trucks/SUVs these days can't fit 16s. There will always be at least some options for oversized tires on 16s though.
