Hey guys, could you please let me know how my maintenance record looks to you?

Am I missing something big I should be doing for my truck? I want her to run till the wheels fall off.

I missed the timing belt (owner told me I had another 30k miles at least) and had to get a new old engine. Ideally, I don't miss something like that again.

I bought the truck in May 2020 and tried inputting as much as I could from the previous owner into this log.

    Thank you!

Was it the original timing belt that broke? It’s a shame the water pump was done not long before the failure - that’s 90% of the labor.

Yes, I believe so. The shop told me that it was pretty much disintegrated.

It’s hard to tell if you’re being serious. How about this -

there is no mention of ever touching the following -

    Transmission fluid
    Brake fluid,
    Differential fluid,
    Transfer case fluid

I wouldn’t go 18 months between oil changes.

    Nope, totally serious here.

I've made some mistakes I'm sure and that's why I'm here. For instance, I always focused on mileage over time for the oil change... hence how I got in that predicament. Pure lackadaisicalness there but I admit it and I want to learn and improve.

I definitely changed out the brake pads but failed to put that in the maintenance log.

    OK, for starters, you've got a 4.7L V8, not a 4.8.
Next up is things like seafoam and stiction crap that your putting in your truck. Unnecessary. Just use quality lubricants and fuels and you'll be fine.
You got a replacement engine that only had 55k miles on it? color me skeptical.
The fact that you needed a new thermostat shortly after purchasing the truck that just had a new thermostat is weird, and would make me question everything I was told.
What kind of shocks are on this thing that you can rebuild them? I see "Heim" listed twice, and to my knowledge the truck does not come with any heim joints, so I'm assuming some upgraded UCA's or something?
I see you spent money on new tires, but didn't bother to get an alignment then?
No mention of brakes, diffs or transmission stuff. All need regular maintenance as well.

    BOOM Roasted

4.7L is correct,, haha wow, that's a silly typo I'll fix. Thank you

No more seafoam/stiction. Got it. I was sold snakeoil I suppose. By quality lubricants, any suggestions? I have always heard using O'Reilly's brand is fine. I could be wrong

55k mile engine replacement. Idk what to tell ya, this is what I was told by the shop

No response to the thermostat. I definitely wasn't happy when things started malfunctioning after spending all that money. They fixed it all for free though

    Shocks are Kings

Tires/alignment - it's possible that I did or did not get an alignment at the time. Long time ago, can't remember. I know that's standard procedure so probably did and failed to record it.

Brakes/trans/diff fluid - noted! thank you, that is something I have surely neglected

Jokes aside, thank you for the help, I appreciate the advice. I definitely need it

Also, for transmission fluid - is that 100% supposed to be changed on automatic transmission or is that a debated topic?

Quality oils and lubes are all over the place from Kirkland oil to Amsoil sig series stuff. Most people have a preference for one reason or another based on the ridiculous number of oil threads out there. I won’t even go there as I doubt you want this to turn into another oil thread. Do some research and set a budget and there’s a quality oil in there for you somewhere. Intervals are also of great debate, your at 3k changes so no problems there.

It’s 100% not a lifetime fluid. The transmissions are “sealed” with no dipstick to keep moisture out. Most will do drain and fills of the trans pan at regular intervals to keep the fluid and its additives refreshed.

Okay, so it sounds like I definitely need to change the following:
    • transmission fluid
    • differential fluid (rear & front?)
    • brake fluid
    • transfer case fluid
    Sound about right?

Good maintenance baseline steps for a truck of unknown history. Don’t forget to adjust the rear brakes while your back there for optimal brake performance

    Haha fair enough

On the scale of 5 year old to experienced car guy... I'm probably closer to the 5y/o. I work on the truck myself and feel decently capable, but my familiarity is usually reserved for things I've worked on before (aka things that have broken and need fixing haha). That said, I do care about taking care of your things so I don't want to be neglectful

    Thanks for all the help

Not so much your mechanical experience, but how familiar you are with the first gen section of this site and that thread in particular. Almost all you seek is in there. How to’s, watch outs, tips and tricks, etc. all systems are covered from timing belts to brakes to headlight upgrades. It’s your guide to the FGT universe.

For maintenance, jump here, and check the "After you buy the truck (or sometimes before):" section for expected maintenance. Maybe the better way here is not to tell us what your service records are, but to use that for reference so you can spot what you haven't done.

I remember your debacle with the timing belt breaking. That's a real bitch. But glad you got it sorted out with the shop without having to pay an arm and a leg. I was equally skeptical as the others have mentioned they are regarding the miles on the donor. But ...

As for the different read me links given to ya, you'll see where it mentions adding your VEH info to your profile.... 2005 Toyota Tundra 4.7L V8 , especially when asking for help.

That can be added on the Vehicle One-Line Description: at Personal Details | Toyota Tundra Forum

    Thanks man, appreciate that.
Yeah, hopefully they were honest about it but hard to tell. The problem was that I took the truck to a shop (recommended) that ended up transitioning ownership right while my truck was there. So it was kind of a mess
