I Recently bought an 01 Sequoia and it needs a new timing belt. This is my first time changing a timing belt. I have a Haynes repair manual and it states to align the cam shaft sprockets at TDC prior to removing the existing timing belt. I’ve noticed on some YouTube videos that they align the cam shaft sprockets on the “T” to prevent them from moving once existing belt is removed. Which method is correct? Can I just trust the Haynes book to guide me through it? Any other advice is appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, couple of things

We have sticky thread for 1st gen info, want to know the official process? The Toyota service manuals for 05+ and 04- are linked in the 3rd or 4th paragraph: https://www.tundras.com/threads/so-you-wanna-buy-just-bought-a-1st-gen-tundra-eh.115928/

We have a sticky on timing belt parts/info/process: https://www.tundras.com/threads/timing-belt-master-thread-sticky.107240/

This thread is crucial to setting timing correctly: https://www.toyoheadquarters.com/threads/toyota-2uz-fe-timing-belt-marks-4-7l.335/

I think the most important part is this: You only use the Aisin timing belt kit from a reputable source (i.e. not scAmazon, not fleaBay, not Temu, or other common sources of convincing-looking counterfeit parts).

Don't fuck with other brands, Aisin made the factory/OEM parts. Toyota tells you "change every 90k miles or 9yrs", but that only applies if you use OEM parts. If you choose to go aftermarket, given the lackluster quality of aftermarket parts these days, you may get 40k miles? 50k miles? And with something that can snap and destroy your 2UZ-FE mild-interference engine, that's not cool.

Not only that, but you need more than just a belt. Replacing the tensioner and pulleys and water pump while you're in there is pretty crucial, since any of those things failing can and will brick your engine too. Especially the pulleys and tensioner.

Haynes and Chilton are always going to give you the 'shadetree, practical' method of handling things. I've used both of their books for more than 30 years. Regardless what anyone on YouTube tells you, either way should suffice.

This might help to verify. EM-16 and EM-23.

I have an 01 Sequoia as well with over 300k on the clock. I’ve changed mine three times. Nothing difficult. Just lots to take off. I used a compact impact to remove the crank bolt and made a holder to
Aid in torquing it down. If I remember correctly, it’s close to 188 ft pds. All good advice here. Buy nothing but the Aisin kit.

The attached pdf is from the toyoheadquarters.com that was linked above by @shifty` .
Even tho you're a Sequoia, it will still be applicable.

Thanks everyone! I’m going to dig through all your links, this is very helpful. I bought an Asin kit from rock auto. It includes water pump/gasket, tensioner, pulleys, orings.

As long as it was the kit ending in '-021', you're golden! If the one ending in '-001', it lacks a couple of pieces.

What is the thread count of the two outside bolts for the puller? The one I have doesn’t feel right and I don’t want to force it.

Not sure without checking, but I’d guess 8x1.25.

Got it done successfully. I’m no mechanic at all so it took me a few weekends. Thanks again for all the information. Very helpful.
