What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Yea and Ive also heard a lot of people talk about its effectiveness at cutting down on dust getting into your air filter which is definitely a benefit too! I dont see much water but I also am not ready to get into a puddle that reaches over my engine bay either. But dusty roads are something I drive over often. So just for that benefit alone it should be pretty useful. And I also dont want the look of an exterior snorkel either or cutting into my outer fender.

And like @Voss said, now that ive cut so much of my fender liner away my intake is much more vulnerable, so even dipping into a puddle or going through one quickly could splash water and mud into my air filter. Im gonna probably start working on removing my fender today.

 

Makes sense. With all this stuff, I get it. And whatever people want to do to their truck, including adding every overlanding accessory they can find, is fine if that's what they want to do. And I'm sure some people actually need their snorkel. But it still makes me laugh sometimes when I see snorkels. Of course I don't want to destroy my engine...but knowing the streams I've driven across, without even thinking "I wish I had a snorkel"...they were probably deeper water than 70% of the people with snorkels will ever see. To completely make up a percentage.

Didn't even think about dust. I never seek out water but have occasionally found myself on a road with a river crossing. But dust. Dusty roads are a constant for me.

 

Did the entire thing in a day and the most time consuming part was finding the right tubing fyi

Yea probably wont have time for tubing until the weekend. So ill start with getting the fender off and seeing what im looking at

 

How hard is pulling the fender?

 

Fairly simple. 3 bolts on top, 2 near door and a few behind the headlights. Hardest part was putting the fender liner and wheel well molding back on. Careful of those clips

Oh and there’s some rubber thing near the top of the fender where it meets the door. Mindful of that so you don’t have to remove the fender a 2nd time cause you didn’t notice it.

Def get the alignment checked. Cock-eyed steering wheel make me think that, but as to why? Steering rack, outer tie-rod ends, LBJ would be where I start. Does your steering move/shift/jar a decent amount when you hit holes in the road?

Thanks for the input. I checked the steering rack and it's torqued to spec. TREs are new with the steering rack (last 2 years) and no play in the wheels to indicate LBJs or bearings. If I think about it, the steering wheel does seem to get off if I hit a bump right and will stay a little off for a while but will correct later on. Not sure if that's me making things up, or not. I'll check the torque on the alignment bolts and see about an alignment.

 

If you haven't got new bushings already. I'd recommend it. Have your phone record your rack and go turn the steering wheel to full lock (both directions) and watch the video to see if your rack is moving. Or have a friend turn the wheel for you like I did. My rack would literally move like 1-2" compressing the old, worn out bushings.

My 03 dims with the headlights, my 06 doesn't. One of these days I guess I need to rewire it. Honestly I'll probably replace that particular touch screen with an updated Pioneer or something.

The silver part where the spring sits. He sent me a pair that supposedly have a 2.6" drop for the front but I haven't installed anything yet.

One of these days I'll buy some front 5100's and maybe I can get em to make me some with extra drop. Then I can try to sell these 4600's with the 2" drop. Hmm...

 

Yeah well see how it turns out. I found a DC rear axle because I didn't want to cut anything off my stock one. I still need to find a lsd rear end, the one that came out of my sequoia was non lsd unfortunately.

 

That will be nice, because it will fill the rear wheel wells nicely with the extra inch or two of width. I ended up putting 1.25" spacers on my rears to fill in the wheel wells better. Truck looks great now. I'm still thinking I may move the 1.25" spacers to the from and buy 2" spacers for the rear. I rub frame on full lock turns in front.

I'm sure most of you knew this already, but I just learned today - rivet guns are awesome. Making progress on the topper rear window. Plexiglass will be here soon, so I'm trying to get everything else ready.

 

Absolutely, didnt really use one until last year and its really nice to be able to rivet somewhere you cant get a bolt and nut in without access to the backside of something. And you can just drill them out when you want to remove them.

 

Whelp I took the time to remove the Kenwood and install the Chinesium stereo in Ye Olden Tundra. Yeap, its gonna be going back. Its crappy but I had a feeling already.

Screen: The Chinesium model Joy-W019 has a sharp screen but its not very bright. At its brightest it's not as bright as the Kenwood. During the daytime driving I did today, the screen was kind of washed out as well. I set the brightest setting for the daytime and dropped it to 15% percent brightness for night time. When I kick the truck into reverse, the camera comes up at the daytime brightness but when I go back to drive or park, it switches the display to night time. Every. Damn. Time. The icon to change the brightness setting is tiny at the top of the screen. When in wireless Android Auto, which connects quickly but not every time, there is no menu to bring up settings, have to go to home, and then use the icon up top, or go into the settings and mess with it there. Meh.

Audio: I knew going in this wasn't going to have the same sound capability as my Kenwood. It has basic fade/balance, a several band EQ, and "Loudness" for shaping the sound and its all very meh. Because there are no filters either on my headunit or in my mini amp, the speakers get full sound and distort at moderately medium sound levels. Speakers sound like teeeny boomy mess and awful at more than 12 or so volume (out of 40 max.)

Build: Its Chinesium. My crackers weigh more.

Controls: I tied in the blue/yellow wire coming from my Maestro SWC to both SWC wires on the Chinesium and tried to learn the wheel controls. They all turned into next/previous track for some reason. I then removed the Maestro from the wiring and tied both the SWC wires from the Tundy to both SWC wires of the Chinesium and half buttons on left side worked correctly. Powered it off, and swapped the two SWC wires and was able to learn all left side buttons successfully. Volume + and - as well as Next/Previous tracks and Mode button. My right hand controls I set the Answer/Hangup buttons as Volume+ / Volume - as I am used to the volume buttons on the right side of the wheel on my Ferd. This unit has basic SWC functions so no hold options available for each button. Not sure how I would program single press vs long hold options as the unit requires you to long hold the wheel button and then quickly press the corresponding screen screen button to program it.

Cameras: The screen is sharp, claiming a 1280x720 resolution and the backup cam looked nice and sharp. It also came with a dash cam that can be tied into the unit and viewed on the screen. On my test bench, I wired it up but the picture was not very good and had noise interference. Probably the cheapest cams they could find to throw into the box. Meh.

Conclusion: Its very meh. I'm sending it back. I gonna throw the Kenwood back in there for now or I may get the Alpine 670. I just hate the crappy resistive screen of the Kenwood. While the Chinesium unit was in the truck, I tested the Kenwood on the bench and as soon as I apply 12v to the Illumination wire it dims the display correctly. I tested the wire in the truck and it too gets 12V when I turn on my headlights so I'm confuse as to why the Kenwood doesn't dim properly when installed in the truck. Meh.

Update: It turns out my mini amp NA2-320.4 does have a high pass filter option that I'm pretty certain I currently have set to all-pass. I will try that and see if it improves the sound any.

So I started trying to get my fender removed today and I believe all the bolts are removed and it wiggles pretty good but it looks like there is a welded portion on my fender that needs to be cut!

Maybe the earlier years had this spot below the arrow welded? Did you run into this @Voss?

Shifty, On your back up cam install. I'm ready to add the BU cam to the radio replacement (other thread). Today when I measured the back up bulb voltage, it was 10.8 volts (expected 12.2). 2003 tundra. The ground wire has no 'ground' (>200K). This surprised me. The wires are red/blue 12.8 volt, and 'ground' is white/black. The voltage was measured with ignition on, motor not running (safer in reverse). I suspect this would work to tap both and use that as the signal to the head unit. Your thoughts? My 'taps' are soldered connections and heat shrinked as done with the many connections for the radio. I am mostly puzzled that ground is floating.
