How come a 2WD Tundra has the 4x4 knob?

I just bought a used 2014 Tundra Platinum Crewmax 2WD and on the silver part of the dash left side of the radio, there's a hole for the 4x4 knob next to the AC/heater knob that the previous owner(s) removed. I've seen other Tundras that are 2WD and that part of the dash is flat with no hole and I've also seen Tundras with no 4x4 logo on the tailgate but they do have the 4x4 knob on the dash. Does this mean my Tundra is a 4x4 if I buy that knob when the VIN says its a 2WD? Or any idea what goes in that location of the 4x4 knob?

Im sure toyota saves time by only having 1 set if wiring.

my 2wd has a little coin holding cup that goes in that spot

Easiest way to know for sure if you are 4x4 is to crawl under the truck.

Thank you for that info. I just got off the phone with Toyota and they can't seem to find that coin holding cup for that spot. All they can find is the 4x4 knob. Is it possible for you send me a picture of it so I can show the dealer? Thank you in advance.

But how do I know if it's a 4x4 if I go under the truck? What do I look for?

See if you have a CV axle going into the center of the front hubs. 2wd will just be a flat area behind the center of the wheel.

Chances are someone replaced that part and ordered the wrong one..
I'd say those chances are 100%..
Gen 2.5 (2014 to 2021) don't have any kind of OEM 'change holder' in that location.

You’ve got the wrong dash trim piece, or you’re in a 4wd….. there is no coin holder or opening on the 2wd models post 2014 refresh.

You could try putting up a 'want to buy' post in the marketplace and see if anyone has a 2WD silver one for sale.
Some guys replace that part with the black one, it's something I'd like to do in the future.
They might have the old one sitting in a box in the garage or attic.
But be warned replacing that part literally requires this....:eek2:
    I've done it..

I wonder if the 2nd gen coin purse/slot would fit that hole?

Either you have a 4wd truck or previous owner damaged the original and tried to replace. But I don’t think a 2wd would still have the plug for the switch.

Most Toyotas share the main harness across trims. Many options are made easier to add in because of this.

Not all 4x4 models have an emblem on the tail gate. Some of us have stickers. Some of us remove those stickers. Some remove the emblems. Case solved.

My Tundra doesn't have that axle going to the front hub so it's definitely a 2WD. I learned something new today, thank you so much!

Thank you everyone for chiming in! I guess one of the previous owners swapped out that silver dash panel from all those pry marks that I didn't even noticed. Happy New Year everyone!!!

Well, I came to a perfect solution to cover up this hole. Even tho my Raiders suck, it actually looks good and fits perfectly with no glue or anything.

Lucky you!!! Now just add an aftermarket washer fluid bottle and pump under the hood. Route the hose through the hole. Add a little downspout. Fill the washer fluid bottle with your favorite "beverage additive". After you hit the drive thru take a gulp, remove the lid, hold the cup under the spout and hit the like button momentarily. :drevil:
