Nevermind you cut everything.

Usually installers will color-code their wiring. Like ... white to door/window contacts. Gray for siren. Red for motion. Stuff like that. If you have any siren, motion, or other sensors you should be able to pop them off the wall and confirm the wire sheath color, and you can use a DMM to test the wiring if you wanted to label it still. You'll want to check and make sure, like, that green isn't a solid single conductor going to a ground bar somewhere nearby (if it is, remove it just to be clean about stuff). Make sure none of the 4-conductor wiring (the red sheaths) are going to a "wall wart" (power brick).

I agree with everyone above - install a box with a plate. But I'd recommend tossing in a backless low voltage box, slap a blank on it, and label it 'alarm'.

The heat kicked on and I can feel air coming through this hole in the wall. Probably explains the dust.
Weird that they wouldn't seal this a little better.

 

Oh, and cutting the wiring isn't a big deal. If all the wiring is going upward, someone can just mount an alarm panel higher up in the wall if needed, or just use some beans to tap off the wiring that's there. But if they don't know what the wiring is, like you don't bundle it in some painters tape and label it "ALARM", they won't know

Yeah I know I'm never going to use ADT so I wanted it gone. If a future owner wants to mess with it, they can. I'll work on getting these wires organized.

 

Expanding foam is your friend!

Surely you've got a few other places around the house that could use some foam so you're not wasting a can? I have a couple of places where pipes pass into the house that need a refresh every couple of years, for example.

 

a little air 'waste' was factored in to systems like these.
I'd have all sorts of problems if I sealed my house up tight. It just wasn't designed to be tight.

 

There is a fire-stop foam. I used that internally in the house. Like basement to living space.

Expanding foam is awesome. I used a few cans of Loctite foam down in my crawlspace in a few areas. Prepping it for my DIY encapsulation that I have to do down there.

 

If it were me, I'd probably just shove a wad of insulation in the hole.

To his point though, when you grow up with no/less/meager means, if you want things, you learn. Can't spend $200 buying four used tires if you're paying the HVAC guy $350 to fix your HVAC, or $200 for the shop to change out your alternator, etc.

 

HVAC? Weren't you fancy.
An exhaust fan in the attic & everyone opens their window once the sun goes down was our HVAC. Lucky kid is in the bedroom close to the attic door (more air movement).

Man, I'd love to have a whole-house exhaust fan again, I haven't even seen one in a house in at least 20 years now.. We'd probably reduce our HVAC usage by a solid 60%.

 

I pulled one out of the dumpster at work (electrician shares the dumpster). Someone had him remove it / working condition.
It's just gathering dust now - no spare electricity in the attic. When I rewire, I'll have it ready to go.
But i do have vents between 1 & two in the ceiling/floor. Old Skool!

My last house had one. It was awesome in the spring and fall (other than pollen season). Don't really miss it..

A buddy sent me a pic of a full sized duelly truck, flipped over in the surf at Pismo.

 

How does this happen suddenly? A storm or one of those creeper waves?

 

Apparently a sudden rapid rising of the tide during a big wave event.

 

Got it. Unless he washes that undercarriage off really well that wave will ultimately win. That's crazy.

 

Seismic events can also lend to this. Sometimes on the complete opposite side of the globe.

 

I need more advice. I'm getting ready to start cutting shelves for this closet.



This is the goal, but they will be painted.





The problem is this cutout in the closet. I know it would look better if I didn't bring the shelf past this but that means the shelf would only be 11" deep. I was thinking a shelf should be at least 12-14" deep to be useful.

What would Tundra Gang do?

Here's the opposite side where the ADT box was.

 

Wrap the shelf around that cutout? Basically cut the shelf full depth, then full length across, then make a “notch” for that cutout spot in the boards.
